Is there? My understand of the situation is that the demand for illegal Mexican weed no longer exists in California.

I don't think anyone realizes the scale of California grow business that is about to be unleashed. The prices will drop quite a bit, especially on the raw stuff. The edibles and other such infused and processed products probably will remain high. Absolutely there will be a black market if taxes keep going up, but so what, there's a black market for cigarettes.
A dollar spent on the black market is a dollar taken from those who stay on the right side of the law. And it's lost tax revenue. High taxes are fine, but not so high that legal vendors just can't compete.

It's hard to say at the moment because no one is really sure on how the economy of scale will play out here. The LA Times articles was actually very bad with explaining how any and all of this works.

Pot in the news: Colorado woman acquitted at trial for marijuana charges
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.

A 60-year-old Colorado woman arrested in 2013 for having more than 30 pounds (13 kilograms) of marijuana in her basement has been acquitted at trial.

The Daily Sentinel reported Wednesday that Brenda Maggio's attorney argued Colorado law doesn't limit how much marijuana someone can possess if it comes from a legal grow. While prosecutors argued that Maggio and her son, Javier Maggio, also charged for the pot, had more active plants than allowed.

The jury sided with Maggio's attorney and dropped all counts against her.

Following marijuana legalization, teen drug use is down in Colorado
Image

Following legalization, the rate of adolescent marijuana use in Colorado has fallen to its lowest level in nearly a decade, according to new federal survey data.
...
The new federal data shows that adolescent marijuana use fell nationwide in 2016. In no states did the share of teens using pot increase by a significant amount, and in a number, including California, Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey and Texas, rates of teen marijuana use fell considerably.

Use is up, however, among young adults age 18 to 25 and adults age 26 and up. Alcohol use, meanwhile, is falling across the board, according to the federal survey data.

In Colorado, for instance, the number of 18-to-25-year-olds using alcohol on a monthly basis fell by four percentage points between 2014-2015 and 2015-2016. That's the group with the highest propensity to use marijuana, suggesting that a number of young adults are opting to smoke weed instead of get drunk now that the option is available to them.

If that's the case, it could be a big public-health win, considering what public-health experts know about the harmfulness of marijuana vis-à-vis booze.

they're finding out it ain't all that OR they [the survey OR the kids] are lying.

you don't know which. I take this with a grain of salt even though it kind of fits with my expectations.

Californians line up to legally buy recreational pot
(CNN)California began selling recreational marijuana today in what's seen as a milestone in the mainstreaming of the weed, and hundreds lined up to buy it.

Lines formed outside stores licensed to sell the drug long before opening hours, and store owners said they had stocked up in expectation of huge demand.
"It is probably our busiest day in our seven-year history," said Matt Lucero, the owner of Buddy's, a dispenser of medical-use marijuana in San Jose that holds the first license issued by California to also sell recreational marijuana. "We have folks outside; every chair in the building is filled right now."
But what about the prices?
Customers at Buddy's could pick up half an ounce of Homemade Cherry Pie for about $260. Blue Dream is about half that price. Many customers pick up an eighth of an ounce for anywhere between $25 to $60.
I have no idea about either of those brands, I haven't had a personal connection in decades, but I guess it sounds roughly similar to what you might have paid back in the late 80's/ early 90's if you knew a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy.

It's also legal to grow your own now, which is probably going to be less expensive if you know what you're doing.

Not precisely but sort of. Things would have been about 45% cheaper on average back then, due to inflation. But marijuana was not legal anywhere, for medical or otherwise, iirc.

Colorado GOP senator vows to hold up all DOJ nominations in speech torching AG on pot decision
Colorado's GOP Sen. Cory Gardner said he will be putting holds on all Justice Department nominations until Attorney General Jeff Sessions changes his policy on federal enforcement of marijuana prohibition.

Gardner took to the Senate floor on Thursday, excoriating Sessions for "a complete reversal" of stance on the issue and noting that President Donald Trump had opposed federal intervention as a candidate.

In 2016 alone, Colorado reported $198.5 million in tax revenue from marijuana sales.
Translation: Dear Jeff, eat a dick!
...
"Prior to his confirmation, then-Senator Sessions told me there would be no plans to reverse the Cole memorandum," Gardner said. He referred to a 2013 memo penned by former Deputy Attorney General James Cole essentially assuring that the Obama administration would not stop states from legalizing marijuana.

"One tweet later, one policy later, a complete reversal of what many of us on the Hill were told before the confirmation, what we had continued to believe the last year," Gardner said. "And without any notification, conversation, or dialogue with Congress [the policy was] completely reversed."
Translation: Dear Cory, if you suck on my cock, I promise I wont cum in your mouth!

:doglaugh:

Okay, all humor aside, apparently this can be a problem for Jeff...
...
Gardner said he will be putting holds on every nomination to the Justice Department until Sessions "lives up to the commitment that he made to me in my pre-confirmation meeting with him."

A Senate hold enables a single senator to block a nomination, a motion or even a piece of legislation from being seen in the Senate.

To put holds on all nominations is especially consequential for the Justice Department, which reportedly is still missing Senate-confirmed leaders in at least six divisions.

It really is time for congress to change federal law on marijuana.
