Senate Could Vote To Let Marijuana Businesses Use Banks This Week
A bipartisan group of senators is stepping up the push to let marijuana businesses store their profits in banks, with a possible vote coming as soon as this week.
...
Despite a U.S. Department of Justice move in January to undo protections for state marijuana laws, a top Trump administration official has repeatedly indicated he wants to solve cannabis businesses' banking access problems.

Treasury Sec. Steven Mnuchin, in an appearance before a House committee last month, testified that the issue is at the “top of the list” of his department’s concerns.
Sure it is....but then again, you never know.
Then Skank Of America could start in...

I predicted that eventually the price of marijuana would crash with legality, and we're getting closer to the "price of oregano" I predicted.
Weed auctions operate under a traditional model: Sellers submit their wares, and buyers—dispensary owners, intake managers and extract manufacturers—are given an opportunity to inspect products before bidding on parcels awarded to the highest dollar.

Duyck sent 60 pounds of pot to the auction block in December. He had adjusted his expectations downward: He hoped to see something in the ballpark of $400 a pound.

It sold for $100 a pound.

That's a little more than twice the cost of oregano at Walmart.

On the other hand, up until last week you could use your debit card at the dispensary nearest me. As of Tuesday, at least, it was cash only. And I don't think it was a glitch in thier system, because they sign said that the change was "indefinate". So I think someone, somewhere, is cracking down

The pressure on the price is caused by the pot being forced to stay in the state it's grown in. Once it goes to Federal level it will climb back up.

Once it goes federal then every state will grow it making the interstate argument moot.

There are still dry counties, so I doubt every state will get in on that.

(Newser) – Chuck Schumer will introduce a bill Friday—which is, appropriately, 4/20—to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level, the Senate minority leader tells VICE News in an interview set to air in full on HBO Thursday night. "I’ve seen too many people’s lives ruined because they had small amounts of marijuana and served time in jail, much too long. Ultimately, it’s the right thing to do. Freedom," Schumer says in a clip of the interview posted on Twitter. Slate calls it "a major development for the movement to reform drug laws," and adds that Schumer apparently signed a bong during the VICE interview. (John Boehner recently did a 180 on cannabis.)

My prediction is that it goes nowhere. The "War on Drugs" is too good of a pretext for too many things for it to ever be toned down.

Once it's legal at the federal level the last artificial price booster is eliminated. Prices will crash. the consumer price will be 90% taxes.

Eventually, sure. Not for a while though. I do expect a lot of local growers to go out of business.

I don't know about other states, but one of the bullshitty things my state did to prop up the price is that you cannot grow your own if you live withing 25 miles of a dispensary

And another thing I've noted before is that it will be inevitable that more marijuana will be produced than can be consumed. It's not like tobacco, where a typical smoker will go through an ounce a day. A daily pot smoker will go through about half a gram a day - 1/56th what a tobacco user goes through. Without government-imposed limits on production the market quickly becomes saturated which of course causes prices to plunge.

All those people anticipating making a fortune off of marijuana are going to be in for as rude awakening once the federal government legalizes it. Low entry barriers plus a pretty hard natural limit on the maximum market is not an industry that will produce massive wealth.

They used to, probably still do, put plants in along the rivers in the swamps down here. Evidently, the growers just paddle along to harvest. I have rarely heard of busts down here for growing and as the laws lessen, why on earth would a department put any effort whatsoever into enforcement?

I think these sad efforts at control (which are probably pr more than anything else) are going to look like laws that are more humerous than anything else eg.

I've driven through Nevada, and it seems most of the time you're 25 miles from the nearest person let alone a dispensary.

Black market withstanding, the entry level is pretty much whatever the state/local government says it is. I guess Oregon kind of fucked up. It is true the prices are coming down but nobody is buying retail weed at <$100/lb.

Image

And sure, while it can be produced at oregano prices ($23/lb), a gallon of alcohol can be produced for about $1.

I think that once it is nationally legal, the price will float to not lower than $100/oz

Legal dope needs government price supports and none of this free market bullshit, because righteous hippies gotta eat.

Why not do what they have done with other commodities and buy up (and warehouse) the surplus. A strategic stockpile.

Then if there's a shortage ...
