Poll: Pot More Morally Acceptable Than Porn
Depending on who you talk to marijuana use is either becoming more mainstream, or we're all going to hell.

A new Gallup poll says that a majority of Americans think it's "morally acceptable" to light up a joint. When asked if marijuana was morally permissible or morally wrong, sixty-five percent said they didn't have a problem with it. This puts attitudes about weed use on par with other widely accepted but controversial acts including gambling and sex between an unmarried man and woman (69 percent approve), and gay or lesbian relations (67 percent approve).
...
What's Going On?
Attitudes about smoking marijuana pretty much mirror attitudes about legalizing it. Last year, a separate Gallup poll found that 64 percent of Americans favored making pot legal.

The largest swath of Americans who don't have a problem with marijuana are men between the ages of 18 to 35, college educated, and not churchgoers. But pot acceptance doesn't discriminate. Fifty-eight percent of those over 55 also approved of marijuana use, as did 59 percent of women.

The bottom line, says Gallup: "Some states have recently legalized marijuana and many others are considering doing so, perhaps removing some of the stigma associated with the drug. But with roughly two-thirds of the public saying marijuana use is morally acceptable, it seems there will not be sufficient opposition to thwart attempts to make it legal.
Now that is nice to hear...and, we'll see.
Oh WTH, from the same article (for comparison sake)
Moral Highs and Lows
Gallup's annual Values and Beliefs survey, conducted May 1-10, asked Americans to indicate whether they believed each of 22 different behaviors and practices were morally acceptable or morally wrong. Some of the findings:
Birth control: 91 percent says it's morally acceptable, 9 percent say it's morally wrong.
Drinking: 78 percent say it's morally acceptable, 10 percent say it's morally wrong
Divorce: 76 percent says it's morally acceptable, 19 percent say it's morally wrong.
Medical research using stem cells: 66 percent says it's morally acceptable, 29 percent say it's morally wrong.
Smoking marijuana: 65 percent vs. 31 percent
Death penalty: 62 percent vs. 33 percent
Medical testing on animals: 54 percent vs. 33 percent
Porn: 43 percent vs. 55 percent
Cloning animals: 40 percent vs. 51 percent

Canada just legalized marijuana. That has big implications for US drug policy.
Canada has become the first wealthy nation in the world to fully legalize marijuana.

The Senate approved Bill C-45, also known as the Cannabis Act, on Tuesday. The measure was already approved by the House of Commons, so the Senate’s approval means it’s now set to become law.

Corona beer owner to pour $4bn into weed

Corona beer owner Constellation Brands is set to pour some $4bn (£3.15bn) into Canada's top cannabis producer, Canopy Growth, in a deal marking the largest investment in the industry to date.

Last year, Constellation injected $200m into Canopy in a deal to produce a non-alcoholic cannabis-based beverage.

The alcohol firm wants to capitalise on the growing legalisation of the drug.

On news of the deal, Canopy's Toronto-listed stock surged 30%, while on Wall Street, Constellation's fell 6%.

The two firms said the investment would allow Canopy to expand its business reach "in the nearly 30 countries pursuing a federally permissible medical cannabis programme".

Canopy, which has the largest legal cannabis production footprint in the world, currently produces cannabis-based oils and soft gel caps, among other products.

How can I invest in this? Once upon a time there was a company with the ticker symbol POT, but it changed to NTR and was actually just selling potash.

Edited: To answer my own question, I found an ETF (symbol MJ, naturally). Also found some related companies, i.e. Scotts Miracle-Gro (SMG). Think I like SMG better so far.

Students can minor in marijuana at Stockton University

The new Cannabis Studies program rolls out in the fall

Students have been known to partake in "new experiences" in dorm rooms during their college years, but now Stockton University is offering the chance to study marijuana – as a minor.

Called "Cannabis Studies," the minor program will be rolled (ha!) out in early September, according to WNYC.

According to the program's landing page, Stockton believes students "may find the marijuana industry an attractive one to enter after graduation," and hopes the program will "expose students to some of the types of employment they might pursue."

The program was first proposed in March of this year, pitching the idea as offering students "a foundation for understanding the burgeoning cannabis industry."

Stockton says the program includes traditional courses like Introduction to Medical Marijuana (GEN 2347), Cannabis Law (GSS 2198), as well as internship opportunities where students will have more experiential learning.

Tilray passes Canopy Growth to become world's most valuable pot company

Still, more than a third of Tilray shares are held by investors who are betting against the stock

There's a new name atop the rankings of pot companies, as Nanaimo, B.C.-based Tilray Inc. has passed Smith Falls, Ont.-based Canopy Growth to become the most valuable cannabis company in the world.

Tilray went public on the Nasdaq in July, and has since seen its shares rise more than eightfold from $17 US on its IPO day to more than $136 on Tuesday.

That values the company at just under $14 billion US, enough to push Canopy (valued at just over $14 billion Canadian) out of the top spot it has owned for almost its entire existence.

TSX-listed Canopy is still the biggest marijuana company in the world in terms of production and sales, but the hype around Tilray has driven up its market capitalization, in large part because it is one of the few producers whose shares are listed in the United States — making it easier for U.S. investors to buy.

Canadian cannabis companies invest millions in Pablo Escobar's home turf in Colombia

Producing a gram of cannabis in Colombia costs 5 cents, compared to about $1.50 in Canada

At least seven licensed Canadian cannabis producers have set up shop in Colombia, investing more than $100 million in the conflict-hit country that has become a new frontier in the legal marijuana business, according to a review of company filings.

"We understand the pain of the war on drugs. That war was here," said Bibiana Rojas, managing director of Spectrum Cannabis Colombia, a subsidiary of Canopy Growth, one of Canada's largest marijuana firms.

The company will be investing $60 million in greenhouses, production facilities and research in Colombia in the next few years, Rojas said in a phone interview from Bogota, the capital.
[…]
Like other Canadian companies in the country, Canopy's affiliate will be producing marijuana oils and other medical products rather than smokeable buds, which are still prohibited. Colombia legalized medicinal cannabis production and exports in 2015, but recreational use remains illegal.

With a tropical climate ideal for cultivating cannabis, experienced growers, comparatively low wages and a population of 50 million, Canadian firms see Colombia as an ideal place to invest.

They're hoping to use it as a hub for cultivating and refining medical cannabis in order to eventually export across Latin America, a region with a population of 630 million.

Seattle judges throw out 15 years of marijuana convictions

Judges in Seattle have decided to quash convictions for marijuana possession for anyone prosecuted in the city between 1996 and 2010.

City Attorney Pete Homes asked the court to take the step "to right the injustices of a drug war that has primarily targeted people of colour."

Possession of marijuana became legal in the state of Washington in 2012.

Officials estimate that more than 542 people could have their convictions dismissed by mid-November.

Mr Holmes said the city should "take a moment to recognise the significance" of the court's ruling.

"We've come a long way, and I hope this action inspires other jurisdictions to follow suit," he said.

Mayor Jenny Durkan also welcomed the ruling, which she said would offer residents a "clean slate."

"For too many who call Seattle home, a misdemeanour marijuana conviction or charge has created barriers to opportunity - good jobs, housing, loans and education," she said.

And in other mid-term 2018 news...
3 States Legalize Marijuana For Recreational Or Medical Use
Three more states legalized marijuana for recreational or medical use on Tuesday.

Voters in Michigan legalized recreational marijuana, making it the 10th state in the nation and the first state in the Midwest to do so. In both Utah and Missouri, voters legalized marijuana for medical purposes ― the 31st and 32nd states to approve medical cannabis. In North Dakota, voters rejected a measure that would have legalized recreational marijuana.
...
“Voters have once again sent a message loud and clear that it is time to legalize and regulate marijuana. The victory in Michigan highlights just how widespread support is for marijuana policy reform. This issue does not only enjoy strong support on the coasts but also in the Midwest and all throughout the country.”

Oh well, three out of four aint bad.

Found out today that I can’t sell to dispensaries because of the legal grey area they are in, legal locally illegal federally.

What sort of insurance, btw?

Maybe this next congress will finally be the one to change that. On the state level more and more states are legalizing. At some point the feds need to throw in the towel and get with the times.

Life, disability and supplemental health policies (vision, dental, etc.). Just passed my exam for my license on Saturday. Learning the ropes for now, while I wait for the paperwork to go through on my license before I can actually sell.
