Cuba

Post by Rob Lister » Fri May 29, 2015 4:08 pm

We need a such a thread topic title.
(Newser) – President Obama's push to normalize relations with Cuba keeps steamrolling ahead: The State Department has officially removed Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, reports the BBC. The expected move will likely be followed by the reopening of embassies in the two countries. Obama notified Congress of his intention to drop Cuba from the list 45 days ago, and the window closed today on any possible objections. Cuba had been on it for 33 years, and now only Iran, Syria, and Sudan remain.

"Being delisted will bring an end to certain financial and trade restrictions on Cuba," observes the Miami Herald. "But with the embargo and Helms-Burton Act still in effect, the economic impact for Cuba won’t be as far-reaching as it might have been." Only Congress can end the embargo. Sill, foreign companies and banks should be more willing to do business with Havana, now that the threat of US regulations is over.
Good on you Obama. There are some real opportunities there.

Can we end the 'Dry Feet' policy now?

No. That will take a Republican. Or a Mexican. Or a Bush. :)

It is a wonder that there are still folk that don't know how things come together.

I see no downside to this ... other than them becoming the America's Taiwan or Singapore.

Obviously all of those and probably a few score factories and casinos more. They are in a somewhat unique locale with a very, very educated population and a very strong work ethic.

If you're afraid that the money flow may be unidirectional for now, just wait until they find their capitalistic footing. :)

The next step ...
It's another step toward normal relations with Cuba, and a big one: President Obama will announce tomorrow that the US and Cuba will reopen embassies in each other's capitals, reports AP and CNN. Neither story reports a specific date. The countries currently operate lesser missions called "interests" in the capitals, and Politico notes that Congress has no power to block an upgrade to embassy status. Still, expect candidates such as Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz to be vocal in their opposition to the move. Similarly, the two senators could gum up the confirmation of any ambassador to Havana
I'm still trying to see a downside. I'm still wondering how this will impact our current Dry Feet policy for Cuban Floaters.

I see the US taxpayer investing no less than a billion dollars in that shit hole, and that's just a start.

Maintaining the current trade embargo is probably far more expensive than.

BTW, I see businesses investing one-hundred times that over the next 50 years.

At any rate, I haven't heard of any aid proposals. Have you? I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to them. We help Haiti and that is truly a shit hole; an utter lost cause. We should just give Cuba their embassy space.

Why you gotta be a hater, Jacks?

Cuba's economy is partially a shithole because of the US embargo. They basically ideally situated for mass shipping from our gulf ports. Flights used to divert around Cuban air space.

So we have an economy on their side ready to grow, a land mass the size of a large US state, and huge number of potential new buyers of American goods once we end this embargo nonsense and their economy grows.
