The Return of Blago

Appeals Court Tosses Some Blagojevich Convictions, Vacates Prison Sentence

A federal appeals court has thrown out some of the convictions against former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, and tossed out his 14-year prison sentence.

The 7th Circuit Court of Appeals issued its ruling Tuesday, throwing out five of the 18 convictions on corruption charges Blagojevich had faced. Eleven were tied to allegations he tried to sell or trade an appointment to President Barack Obama’s Senate seat.

Although the ruling ordered a new trial on those five charges, it also said if prosecutors elect to drop those charges, a new trial is not needed, and the district court should proceed directly to a new sentencing.

The court said Blagojevich is not entitled to be released from prison, pending the further proceedings.

Not too late for him to throw his hat into the Presidential election ring.

You mean his return to the news reports.

Because he's not really coming back any time soon. :)

It would be hilarious if the judge at resentencing gave him 20 years.

Rules for running for president of the United States.

1. Must be a natural born citizen.
2. Must be at least 35 years old.
3. Must be a resident for at least 14 years.

Nope. No rules against being an ex-convict. Might as well throw his toupe in the ring just like Trump.
Such potential!

Update: So sorry Blago.

Judge denies ex-Democratic Gov. Blagojevich's bid to lighten 14-year sentence (AP via Fox)

It cheers me up to know there is some justice in the world. :)

If Obama doesn't pardon him maybe Hillary will. Or maybe Trump will sell indulgences.

I doubt it. I don't think there's any particular love between Obama and Blagojevich, and Blago was pretty unpopular as Governor - the only reason why he won his 2nd election is that the Republican was even more distasteful - I think I voted Green party that year.

I don't see how helping Blago would help Clinton in any way.

And I doubt that they might pardon him - maybe commute his sentence at best.

Update:

Blagojevich seeks presidential commutation of prison term (AP)

CHICAGO (AP) -- Imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is seeking a presidential commutation of his 14-year sentence on a corruption conviction.

U.S. Department of Justice spokeswoman Dena Iverson said Friday the department has received a petition for commutation from Blagojevich. She declined to comment further.

I would go out of a limb and say a pardon is out of the question but that's a thin limb.

Bless his heart for jailhouse lawyering.

Hopefully he's not using Jared's lawyer, Cueball
