SWATting

Postby ed » Thu Nov 26, 2015 1:16 pm

Very scarey stuff

Early one weekend morning in January 2014, Janet was sleeping fitfully in her parents’ home in Toronto. A junior studying elementary education at a nearby college, she had gone home for the weekend in a state of nervous collapse. For months, someone going by the name ‘‘Obnoxious’’ had been harassing her online. He had called her cellphone repeatedly and sent her threatening texts. Worst of all, he had threatened to ‘‘swat’’ her at school — to make a false emergency call to the police and lure a SWAT team to her door.

Janet was afraid to go to sleep; she kept thinking that he was going to swat her in the middle of the night. He said he was going to swat her family, too. Her father owned a bar, and her mother worked at a hotel. They were from China, and their English wasn’t great. They didn’t know much about her life online, and they would never understand why someone would stalk their daughter on the Internet.

Around 6:30 a.m., her father jostled her awake and said she needed to come downstairs. When she got to the top of the steps, she saw her family’s living room ‘‘covered in cops.’’ There were at least five officers in riot gear, guns drawn. They had bulletproof vests and pads and helmets with visors. She remembers the eerie silence of the officers — they said nothing at all. She had no idea what to do with her hands. ‘‘I was scared to move,’’ she says. ‘‘I wanted to go downstairs with my hands up. I was afraid they would shoot me. I was so scared. I feel like they just didn’t really let their guard down until I told them what happened.’’

Local boy makes bad:

http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ss ... uilty.html

A Lake County teen who made over 100 bomb threats, or so-called "swatting" calls, across North America pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced Wednesday.

The 17-year-old boy from Painesville Township pleaded guilty to 11 charges, according to a post on the Lake County Sheriff's Office Facebook page. Four of the charges were related to bomb threats that forced school closings in Painesville and Strongsville, as well as Fort Myers, Florida and Naugatuck, Connecticut.

...

On Wednesday, the boy was sentenced to five years in juvenile detention or confinement until his 21st birthday, and then an additional 13 years in adult prison.

We have to be compassionate to the little monster because he is so young and was abused as a child. (Apparently not enough)

I do not know enough about the damage he caused. Having your house stormed by a SWAT team could be the least damage you suffer--property damage, damage to your reputation, lost of a night while it all sorts out. Leave aside the financial costs to the police.

Add in someone in your family getting hurt, you losing your job, someone getting killed because--Heavens to Betsy--you are not coherent when the storm troopers smash into your home being told you were armed with guns and bombs--and I begin to think "throw away the key" or ruin this kid's life in order to set an example against other fools.

Sad all the way around. Pistorias will still serve less time for murdering his girlfriend.

The Sheriff says:

https://www.facebook.com/Lake-County-Sh ... 312469780/

On 3/2/15 the Lake County Sheriff’s Office joined the Painesville Police Department in investigating several bomb threat calls which were taken by Central Dispatch. The threats on that date were directed at Harvey High School in Painesville, OH leading to its evacuation. There were subsequent bomb threat calls handled by Central Dispatch made over the course of the following week which were directed at both Harvey High School and Riverside High School.

The investigation, which was primarily conducted by Painesville PD with assistance from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, revealed the threats were made by a 17 year old juvenile from Painesville Twp. The investigation showed the juvenile had been conducting these threats using internet methods to attempt to conceal his identity and location. He ultimately admitted to placing more than 100 of these bomb threats or ‘swatting’ calls (falsely reporting a serious threat or situation to police in an attempt to elicit a SWAT team response) to schools and other locations nationwide, and in Canada, doing it all from his Painesville Twp. residence. As a result of this investigation numerous law enforcement agencies were able to learn how he was using the internet to do these crimes and thus are now able to investigate future incidents from a more informed perspective.

The juvenile ultimately pled guilty to eleven charges related to these bomb threats or ‘swatting’ incidents. Four of those charges related to bomb threats forced schools to be evacuated in Painesville, OH, Strongsville, OH, Fort Myers, FL and Naugatuck, CT. There were additional charges related to the ‘swatting’ of private residences in both Plymouth, MA and South Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. The charges included Inducing Panic, Making False Alarms, Extortion, Coercion, Telecommunications Harassment and Discharging a Firearm. All were found to have occurred from his residence.

On 12/2/15 the juvenile was sentenced by Judge Lawson to 5 years at the Ohio Department of Youth Services confinement or until his 21st birthday, and the court ordered stayed an 13 year prison term with the Ohio Department of Corrections. He was classified a Serious Youthful Offender on 6 of those counts.

During the hearing Judge Lawson Judge Lawson commended all three Dispatchers at Central Communications who handled the threat calls for their efforts and indicated all did a great job in handling these calls which were the first steps leading to a conviction.

Perhaps getting too old for the sort of jeezny he had been leading, brothers.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

The inevitable has happened:

Prank SWAT Call May Have Led to Wichita Police Killing a Random Man on His Own Doorstep

Thursday night, Wichita, Kansas, Police sent out a SWAT team to respond to a 911 call that a man shot his father and was holding his family hostage in their home.

The telephone call was a lie. There was no hostage situation—but nevertheless a man at the home ended up dead, shot and killed by a police officer at his own front door.

Police right now are being tight-lipped about what actually happened at the home of the dead man, identified by relatives as Andrew Finch, 28, as the circumstances are still under investigation. Police did say they don't believe Finch fired on police officers before they shot him, according to the Wichita Eagle. His family says he was not armed.

It seems likely that this was the outcome of a "swatting" prank that has finally reached its inevitable awful conclusion. "Swatting" is a nasty prank where somebody calls 911 and tells police a violent crime or hostage situation is happening at somebody else's home. Police then show up with weapons to bear and end up terrifying an innocent party who is not doing anything at all. Often times the swatters use tech tools to conceal or change their number so that it appears to be local and credible.

Swatting pranks often have ties to the video gaming community, and that may well be the case here. Though, again, it's still too soon to say for sure, the Eagle reports that the prank may have originated as part of a dispute between Call of Duty gamers. Based on a Twitter fight, it appears one gamer may have given another gamer a false address, that of Finch's family, and that's where the police were sent. Finch's relatives told the Eagle that he didn't play video games, so if these facts are true, he wasn't even a party to this dispute.

Finch's family told the media this afternoon that Finch was not armed and that he had gone to the door to see what was going on yesterday when he saw all the flashing lights. Apparently the family had no idea they were the raid's target. Lisa Finch, Andrew's mother, told the Eagle the police then raided the house after shooting her son. They were all handcuffed and taken to the police station for interviews.

The family is furious not just at the prankster who got Andrew killed, but the police as well:

"What gives the cops the right to open fire?" Finch asked. "Why didn't they give him the same warning they gave us? That cop murdered my son over a false report."

Finch and Hernandez-Caballero said they want to see the officer – identified only as a seven-year veteran of the department – and the person who made the false report held accountable.
A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.

Yeah, when you tell the police that somebody in there is armed and dangerous, and in fact has already killed someone, they're going to be on a hair trigger. The person who called in the false report should be charged with murder. The police probably have some culpability too, but they were deceived. I feel bad for the officer who shot the guy.

It's rather like painting a whole group of people by the action of few, and you don't seem to keen on that usually.

Fair enough, except for the "few" part. But it's not a demographic one is born or indoctrinated into. It is defined by the people it attracts, and the type of people they attract tend to behave a certain way. Or misbehave. Same with clubs or gangs.

You don't hear about country club members swatting each other. Or just about any other group.

Need I also remind that there is such a high demand for ddosing gaming servers, it lead to the rise of some of the largest retail bot networks. You don't have that without a lot of bad apples. Criminally bad apples.
