The Times of Israel wrote:Jerusalem museum censors evolution exhibit to avoid offending ultra-Orthodox

The Natural History Museum in Jerusalem has been keeping an exhibit on human evolution covered under a sheet to avoid offending ultra-Orthodox visitors, and a staff member earlier this month asked a customer to leave when she inquired why the museum was censoring the display.

“I was saddened by it and rather shocked,” the visitor, Chaya David, told The Times of Israel following the incident. “It’s unwarranted and illegal.”

The Hebrew-language display, titled “The beginning of human evolution and culture,” details the stages of the gradual transformation from apes to the modern homo sapiens, complete with various skulls, models and ancient hunting tools along with written explanations.
[…]
The museum said it had received approval from municipal authorities to hide the exhibit, along with two other displays on dinosaurs and on the human body and sexuality, during visits by ultra-Orthodox groups.

So it's not really hidden from those who want to see it.

A reasonable compromise.

South China Morning Post wrote:How Mandarin is conquering Africa via Confucius Institutes and giving China a soft-power advantage

Already Africa’s most important economic partner, China is also leaving a cultural footprint across the continent with more than 50 Confucius Institutes teaching Mandarin to students eager to get jobs at Chinese companies
[…]
Fall complains that his students nowadays find it impossible to get visas to study in Europe or the US. The Chinese government, on the other hand, has eased visa requirements for Senegalese students, and each year it funds scholarships for 50 of the best students from the Confucius Institute to study Mandarin at Chinese universities.

The popularity of Chinese language learning has increased in recent years across Africa. Evidence suggests ambitious young Africans are increasingly inclined to take up Mandarin as a way to land a dream a job in China or benefit from China’s growing influence on the continent.

“There’s a momentum building for Chinese,” Fall says. And with more than 50 Confucius Institutes across the continent, there are also signs that Mandarin is beginning to challenge the ubiquity of European colonial languages in African countries.

Let's, at least temporarily, incorporate Austria into the Orient.
WaPo wrote:Austria to close 7 mosques, expel imams in crackdown

Austria’s government said Friday that it is closing seven mosques and plans to expel imams in a crackdown on “political Islam” and foreign financing of religious groups.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said the government is shutting a hardline Turkish nationalist mosque in Vienna and dissolving a group called the Arab Religious Community that runs six mosques.

The actions by the government are based on a 2015 law that, among other things, prevents religious communities from getting funding from abroad. Interior Minister Herbert Kickl said the residence permits of around 40 imams employed by ATIB, a group that oversees Turkish mosques in Austria, are being reviewed because of concerns about such financing.

Kickl said that, in two cases, permits have already been revoked. Five more imams were denied first-time permits.

The conservative Kurz became chancellor in December in a coalition with the anti-migration Freedom Party.
[…]
Austria’s move angered the government in Turkey, where President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman said the decision “is a reflection of the Islamophobic, racist and discriminatory wave in this country.”

“It is an attempt to target Muslim communities for the sake of scoring cheap political points,” spokesman Ibrahim Kalin wrote on Twitter. He added that “the Austrian government’s ideologically charged practices are in violation of universal legal principles, social integration policies, minority rights and the ethics of co-existence.”

Fact is that Erdogan has an important electorate in Germany and Austria, and would very much like to hold political meetings there. (And keep his commoners under strict scrutiny too.)

Vogue Arabia cover featuring Saudi princess sparks backlash

Although apparently this particular "backlash" isn't coming from the usual suspects?
The cover of Vogue Arabia's June issue, featuring a Saudi princess lounging in the driver's seat of a red convertible, has drawn widespread criticism following a string of arrests of women's rights activists.
The June issue, which claims to be "a celebration of the trailblazing women of Saudi Arabia" features Princess Hayfa bint Abdullah al-Saud, the daughter of the late King, pictured glamorously on the front cover. It was intended to mark the end of a ban on female drivers.
Critics, however, have accused the title of being tone deaf, pointing out that at least 11 activists have been arrested since May 15, most of whom are women who have fought for the right to drive.
According to a state security spokesman, the women arrested were accused of wanting to "destabilize the kingdom and breach its social structure and mar the national consistency."
Many of the detainees were held incommunicado, while state media quickly labeled the women as "traitors" and "agents of embassies."

OK, I see the point. Vogue is just being clueless here. Vogue also infamously did a puff piece about Bashar Assad's wife called "A Rose in the Desert" back in 2011. Being Vogue, they will always err on the side of flattering the rich and powerful and glamorous, rather than pointing out their abuses.
A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.

From last year:
China Forces Muslim Minority to Install Spyware on Their Phones

Chinese authorities in the province of Xinjiang are forcing locals of the Uyghur Muslim minority to install an app on their phones that will allow the government to scan their device for "terrorist propaganda," local media reports.

In reality, the app creates MD5 hashes for the user's files and matches them against a database of known terrorist content.

The app also makes copies of the user's Weibo and WeChat databases and uploads it to a government server, along with the user's IMEI, IMSI, and WiFi login information.

The app is called Jingwang (Citizen Safety) and was developed by police forces from Ürümqi, Xinjiang's capital. Authorities launched the app in April, and also included the ability to report suspicious activity to the police.

At the start of July, Xinjiang officials started sending WeChat messages in Uyghur and Chinese to locals, asking them to install the app or face detainment of up to 10 days.

Police have also stopped people on the street to check if they installed the app. Several were detained for refusing to install it. Locals are now sharing the locations of checkpoints online, so others can avoid getting arrested.

Chinese Lasers Suspected Of Targeting U.S. Military Planes

A U.S. military official has said that military planes have been targetted by lasers while flying in the Pacific, noting that 20 incidents have already been recorded since last September, with the latest one being within the last two weeks, reports CNN. These lasers have the capability to blind pilots, making the situations dangerous. The military official, who didn’t want to go on the record with CNN, also shared that the Chinese are suspected to be the sources of those laser flashes. Meanwhile, command spokeswoman Marine Maj. Cassandra told Aviation Week that the incidents have originated “from a range of different sources both ashore and from fishing vessels.” No injuries were reported resulting from these incidents.

While these incidents have been happening around the East China Sea, where there is a heavily trafficked area for shipping as well as where there are disputed island chains that both China and Japan laying claim to them, there were similar attacks that occurred earlier this year. Those attacks happened in the East African country of Djibouti. The U.S. military said in those instances there were injuries and the lasers were traced to a nearby Chinese military base, reports CNN. The website also reported that at a press briefing Friday, Geng Shuang, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, said, “According to what we have learned from the relevant authorities, the accusations in the relevant reports by U.S. media are totally groundless and purely fabricated.”

Saudi Moves Forward With Plan to Turn Qatar Into Island

Saudi Arabia is moving forward with a plan to dig a canal that would physically enshrine its yearlong rift with Qatar by turning the emirate from a peninsula bordering the kingdom into an island, Saudi media reported on Tuesday.

Five international companies that specialize in digging canals have been invited to vie for the project, with bids closing on Monday and the winner to be chosen within 90 days, Makkah newspaper reported, citing unidentified people familiar with the matter. The canal should be completed within one year of work starting, it said. The report was also carried by Saudi-owned news channel Al Arabiya and shared on Twitter by Saudi royal court adviser Saud Al Qahtani.

TV Presenter Leaves Saudi Arabia as Kingdom Launches Probe Into 'Indecent Dress'

Riyadh: Saudi authorities have launched a probe after a female TV presenter wore "indecent" clothes while reporting on the end of a decades-long woman driving ban, triggering outrage on social media.

Shireen al-Rifaie, a Saudi presenter with Dubai-based Al Aan TV, appeared in a widely-circulated video wearing a loose headscarf and a partly open gown that revealed her trousers and a blouse.

The clip sparked a torrent of criticism from arch-conservatives on social media, with the Arabic hashtag "naked woman driving in Riyadh" gaining traction.

The kingdom's General Authority for Audiovisual Media on Tuesday said they had referred Rifaie to investigators, accusing her of "violating regulations and instructions" by wearing "indecent clothes".

Tourist sentenced to 8 years in prison for anti-Egypt Facebook post
A Lebanese tourist arrested last month after posting a video to Facebook saying she was sexually harassed in Egypt was sentenced to eight years in prison on Saturday.

Reuters reports that Mona el-Mazboh was arrested at Cairo airport after her 10-minute video calling Egypt a “son of a b---- country” went viral.

The 24-year-old woman tells of being sexually harassed by men in taxis and on the street and an incident in which money was stolen from her during a previous visit, the wire service reports.

The court found her guilty of deliberately spreading false rumors that would harm society, attacking religion and public indecency, sources told Reuters.

Ultra-Orthodox men again hold up plane, refusing to sit beside women

Captain of Austrian Airlines flight to Vienna forced to intervene, asks women to move; plane arrives over an hour late; MK Lapid calls to remove such passengers immediately
[…]
Austrian Airlines said in a statement it apologized for passengers’ inconvenience and said it had done its best to accommodate the group’s request.

Responding to the story on Twitter, Yesh Atid party leader Yair Lapid called for a severe response to such incidents.

“Once again a primitive group of Haredis moved and humiliated women on a flight,” he wrote. “If for once they’re removed from the flight without hesitation or recompense, this disgrace will end.”
