Some news from Turkey (where Erdogan is now "hyperpresident"):
Turkey suddenly sacks 18,000 officials in emergency decree, days before Erdogan is sworn in again

More than 18,000 civil servants including police officers, academics and members of the armed forces in Turkey are to be dismissed as the country gets set to lift the state of emergency that had been in place for around two years.

The decree was issued on Sunday, shortly after Recep Tayyip Erdogan's re-election last month as he prepares to take on an executive presidency with a revamped parliament.

Among those to be dismissed, around 9,000 are from the country’s police force. Around 5,000 more are from the armed forces and hundreds are academics from across the country. Their passports will also be cancelled.

Some retired service personnel who had their ranks annulled will also be deprived of their pensions as a result.

The ruling, which was 461 pages in size and published in the Official Gazette, also shuttered twelve non-governmental organisations, three newspapers and one television station.

But 148 people who were previously sacked are to be brought back in under the decree.

And for the typically oriental part:
Turkey's Erdogan son-in-law made finance minister amid nepotism fears

The appointment of Berat Albayrak appeared to rattle the markets amid concerns of nepotism in the upper echelons of power.

Mr Erdogan, who was re-elected last month, has vowed to "propel our country forward" with his sweeping new powers.

Opponents fear his new role, executive president, will destroy democracy.

Mr Erdogan's new position marks a transition away from a parliamentary system and the office of prime minister, which has been in place since the foundation of the modern Turkish republic 95 years ago.

It allows him to appoint ministers and vice-presidents and intervene in the legal system.

Iran General Says Israel Behind Climate Change and Is Stealing Clouds

An Iranian general has accused Israel of causing climate change in the revolutionary Shiite Muslim republic by stealing the water out of clouds passing over the Mediterranean.

Brigadier General Gholam Reza Jalali, head of Iran's Civil Defense Organization, revealed the charges during an agricultural conference in the capital city of Tehran. He claimed Iranian scientific centers have proven that Israel and an unnamed neighboring country were secretly cooperating to extract the moisture out of clouds bound to pass over Iran, thus robbing the country of rain and snow.

"Joint teams from Israel and one of the neighboring countries make the clouds entering into Iran barren. Moreover, we are faced with the cases of cloud theft and snow theft," Jalali said, according to a translation reported by Iran's semi-official Tasnim News Agency of comments featured by the Iranian Students' News Agency.

The official further cited a recent four-year study showing that all highlands exceeding roughly 7,200 feet extending from Afghanistan to the Mediterranean have received snowfall except for Iran.

Fu Manchu is not "typical" anything.

He is the immortal embodiment of Yellow-Peril-ness. :coolspecs:

Emphasis added.

We're talking about Fu Manchu here, not some expendable minion.

The correct adjective is insidious.

Wrong. The Orient starts at least at Venice, and on the southern shores of the Mediterranean at the Atlantic. (Even the locals say so…) 8)

Short version: Anything East of Suez.

Yes that includes Jews.

Egypt to regulate popular social media users

Egypt's parliament has passed a controversial law that will allow the state to regulate social media users.

Under the law, a personal social media account, blog or website with more than 5,000 followers could be considered a media outlet and subject to media law.

Critics say the legislation will increase the authorities' ability to crack down on free speech and dissent.

A number of opposition activists have been arrested in recent months on charges of spreading false news online.

Tens of thousands of people have been detained in Egypt since 2013, when the military overthrew Mohammed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, following mass protests against his rule.

The new law - passed on Sunday by two-thirds of MPs - placed popular accounts on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms under the supervision of Egypt's media regulator, the Supreme Council for the Administration of the Media.

The council was also given the power to block websites and file criminal complaints against platforms and individuals accused of offences such as "inciting people to violate laws" and "defamation against individuals and religions".

However, a provision that would have allowed pre-trial detentions of journalists was amended after pressure from the journalists' syndicate, AFP reported.
