Concerned about the gender pay gap? Well are you?

Then you are a racist.

Here’s Why Closing The Gender Wage Gap Is A White Feminist Issue
The Frisky

And if you aren't concerned, you are a sexist.

So which is it? :P

Well, that's not exactly what she said. Although I agree that her analysis is pretty shallow and doesn't go beyond looking at the most general of statistics.

She does note that the racial pay gaps are larger than the gender pay gap.
However, the biggest wage gaps are interracial and not necessarily gender-specific. In order to truly delve into the issue, here are some highlights from the U.S. Bureau Labor of Statistics 2013 December Report:

Asian men out earned all other demographics, with a weekly median earning of $1,059. In comparison, White men earned $884, Black men $664 and Hispanic or Latino men earned $594.
Asian women and White women (with weekly median earnings of $819 and $722 respectively) earned more than Black men and Hispanic men.
Black women and Hispanic women had the lowest median incomes earning $606 and $541, respectively.
No attempt to delve any deeper here and compare people working in the same jobs with the same amount of experience and qualifications. And nobody seems to be concerned about the "pay gap" between Asians and other people (not that they should be, but does anyone suppose that the gap is due to racial discrimination? Of course not).

Great website you found there, btw, Abdul. Here's another important article they have on offer:

As the father or a wonderful eight year old daughter, I am concerned about the pay gap. I saw the research back in the mid-2000s that showed women in high tech/stem tend to not make as high salary demands as male counterparts nor bargain as hard. My daughter will be instructed to go baller.

She has the vagina. She has the control. The best con ever played by men is to make women think they don't have control...

In Stem/HighTech, a female in college applying for an intern program is a unicorn. If you have to pick 8 interns, it is going to be her and 7 of those other clods. Pick the asian kids if you want them to actually complete anything. The female will typically have the guys all but practically do her work for her in typical preening behavior. If you are allowed to hire 2 of them, her and one of the clods are getting hired. If she doesn't pan out, we'll make her a project manager or something.

She is in demand more than tech workers in general. The female bathroom at google is a ghost town. She has the power, she can ask "is that as high as you can go? if so, I will have to get back with you".

The horrible truth of women in science/tech is that they are so in-demand, they can get away with murder. Meanwhile, there are hundreds of feminist dance theory majors serving coffee and whining about pay gap.

Beam me up Mr. Speaker to the Amazon Women on the Moon.

Somewhere between dance majors and high tech types, are plenty of relatively high paid "real" workers (e.g. plumbers), mostly men. And the few women have no particular advantage.

But how many women want that sort of job, even as an independent business person?

There is no way for the government to iron out every possible disparity or (even come close), without a totally centrally controlled economy complete with work assignments and production quotas from the commissar.

It's sexist that a degree in women's studies or English literature doesn't pay as much as a degree in engineering.

Equal pay?

If we go there, they'll ask to be given SHOES. And be let out of the KITCHEN. It would be chaos.

Here is one from the other side of the pond...

Study: Gender Pay Gap Caused By Girls Aspiring to Lower-Paid Jobs
An important driver behind the so-called gender pay gap is that teenage girls aspire to lower-paid careers than boys, according to a major new study.

Analysing data collected from nearly 8,000 teenagers in Britain, researchers at University College London (UCL)’s Institute for Education found that the careers 14-year-old girls highlighted as their ideal future jobs paid 27 per cent or £6.49 less per hour than those chosen by boys of the same age.

Do you harass black women? No?

My Experience at Charlie Rose Went Beyond Sexism
Esquire
In 1997, I joined the production team of Charlie Rose’s popular interview show. I was the only black journalist on staff. At the time, there was little to no recognition of what it meant to be black and female in a workplace dominated by white men.

...
Synopsis: He harassed all the white women, but not her.

Analysis: And you know what that means.

Are we assuming that studies showing a pay gap have disregarded some of these issues, or has that been confirmed? I'm not trolling, that's an important question.

I think the studies showing a 'pay gap' have ignored these issues.

But the whole "73 cents to a dollar" slogan is just so catchy....why bother?

The ones in the UK (which has a very similar total wage gap to the USA) showed that when comparing the same job/experience, female graduates earned more than equivalent male graduates all through their 20's (until pregnancy career breaks derail things).

Another big issue (from the Telegraph):
"The gender pay gap is perpetuated by teenage girls who want jobs that pay less, a major study has found.

While teenage girls have higher aspirations than boys to attend university, their male counterparts tend to aspire towards professions with bigger salaries, according to research by University College London (UCL)’s Institute for Education."

That should fall out of the study if you're comparing people of similar jobs and experience.

Yes, but the headline grabbing 77 cents on the dollar studies don't...
