China now taking 28% of Venezuela oil production to repay debt

Venezuela only paid the interest on $19 billion in loans from China for the past two years. Some sources say the outstanding debt is $23 billion and other reports $50 billion in loans.

...big snip...
From China could be the new owner of Venezuela's oil industry
Over the past decade, China has sent an estimated $62 billion to Venezuela in one form or another, representing about half of all the money that China has lent to Latin America. For years, Venezuela has been sending oil shipments to China as repayment, and last year it shipped roughly 330,000 bpd to China, sales that earned Caracas little or no revenue.
So what did they do with $62 Billion, pay it out in welfare?

If China made moves towards Venezuela the US would put its military between them and China and China is way too far from home to do anything about it.

China bought a lemon, and they can't even make lemonade from it.

Venezuela says it is refining gold in Turkey following sanctions

Venezuela’s central bank this year began refining gold in Turkey following a wave of international sanctions that have left it unwilling to carry out such operations in Switzerland, the country’s mining minister said on July 18.

The central bank for several years has been buying gold from small miners in the south of the country and refining it to be used as monetary gold to shore up its international reserves that have tumbled as the country’s socialist economy implodes.

“This is an agreement established with Turkey and the Venezuelan central bank,” said Victor Cano in a press conference.

“It’s being done by allied countries because imagine (what would happen) if we sent gold to Switzerland and we are told that it has to stay there because of sanctions.”

He did not say which Turkish companies were involved or how much had been refined there, but said the government had purchased 9.1 tonnes of gold from small miners this year.

The gold is returned to Venezuela after being refined in Turkey and becomes part of the central bank’s portfolio of assets, he said.
[…]
Cano was responding to comments by opposition leader Julio Borges, who said the government was selling gold to Turkey in an effort to compensate for declining production of oil, which provides the lion’s share of the country’s foreign exchange.

“There is no gold contraband to Turkey,” Cano said.

According to official data from Turkey’s Statistics Institute, the country’s gold trade with Venezuela started in 2018. While some 20.15 tons of gold were imported in the first five months of the year, any gold was not exported to Venezuela, data has shown.

Caracas' dying botanical garden highlights Venezuela's decay
CARACAS (Reuters) - Dead palm trees and a dried-up lagoon are what you see when you enter Caracas’s botanical garden. A UNESCO World Heritage site and once one of the city’s most important tourist spots, its directors are trying to rescue it from abandonment.

While Caracas neighborhoods go weeks without water due to government mismanagement, the gardens have been dry since March and its famed collection of thousands of plant species is wilting away, according to curators.

The gardens were once an idyllic spot in Caracas’s chaotic center where students from the nearby Central University of Venezuela would meet to study and office workers would relax. The United Nations cultural agency in 2000 called it a “masterpiece of modern city planning”.

As the once-wealthy country spirals into economic chaos under President Nicolas Maduro, workers are cutting down the dead debris of once lush groves of towering moriche palms. Over a third of its palm tree species have died in the last few years, staff said.

“Even the cactuses need water though people don’t believe it,” Jan Tillett, who has looked after the gardens’ nurseries for 15 years, said, standing by the dried-up lagoon.

The socialists in charge of Venezuela really do seem determined to put Adam Smith's famous quote to the test and find out just how much ruin there is in a nation.

Venezuela to remove five zeroes from ailing currency (Reuters)
CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela will remove five zeroes from the bolivar currency rather than the three zeroes originally planned, President Nicolas Maduro said on Wednesday, in an effort to keep up with inflation projected to reach 1 million percent this year.

From June:
In Caracas of All Places, a Construction Boom Suddenly Emerges

You can still find a place to enjoy a nice steak dinner in Las Mercedes, the Caracas district once known for discos and beer-by-the-bucket pubs. Mostly, though, it’s shuttered stores and graffiti-swamped apartment blocks punctuated by busted street lights. And the strangest thing: scaffolding.

On brand-spanking new construction, no less. This seems wildly out of place in the economic basket-case capital of world. But there it is on Paris Street. And over on Jalisco. And on block after block. Las Mercedes, it turns out, is where some of Venezuela’s richest citizens, prohibited from moving cash out of the country, are parking it.

Venezuela Lawmaker Who Decried Health Crisis Flees, Denouncing Threats

CARACAS (Reuters) - Opposition lawmaker and oncologist Jose Manuel Olivares, who led protests over Venezuela's crumbling health sector, has fled for neighboring Colombia after being told that his relatives could be arrested unless he quit politics.

Olivares said the SEBIN intelligence service grew increasingly aggressive after his brother was arrested last year and detained for several months in what Olivares called an arbitrary detention meant to intimidate him.

At the end of last week, Olivares received a phone call from a man who identified himself as a member of the SEBIN.

"He said I had not learned my lesson with my brother, and informed me that they had arrest warrants against my wife, my mother, and my brother," Olivares told Reuters on Friday, adding that SEBIN patrols were also regularly visiting his relatives' homes.

After that phone call, the 32-year-old lawmaker who represented the coastal state of Vargas decided to flee.

Over the weekend, Olivares and his wife, brother, and three-month-old son drove 18 hours to the Colombian border, which they crossed illegally because the baby had not been granted a passport.

Venezuela President Maduro 'survives drone attack'
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro says he has survived an assassination attempt involving explosive drones.

Mr Maduro was speaking at an military event in Caracas when the alleged attack occurred.

Live footage of Mr Maduro's speech shows the president suddenly looking upwards - startled - and dozens of soldiers running away.

Mr Maduro has blamed Colombia for the attack - something denied by Bogota as a "baseless" accusation.

Seven soldiers were injured, and several people were later arrested, the Venezuelan authorities said.
Oh well, better luck next time...

UPDATE on the recent assassination attempt...
Venezuelan President Maduro blames US backers and Colombia after drone attack
.
...
Mr Maduro was unhurt.

Information minister Jorge Rodriguez said that some of those behind the attack have been detained.

A few hours after the attack, the president appeared back on state television, blaming the "ultra-right wing" in Venezuela - his term for the opposition - backed by US financiers and Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, an outspoken critic of his.

He vowed to bring those responsible to justice, "no matter who falls".
