I don't know why Corbyn thought he needed a three-line whip.

Apparently the Marxists think that the Tories will muck up Brexit, allowing Mad Jeremy to take over and make the UK into the socialist paradise he has always dreamed of since he was a schoolboy.

Constitutionally, parliament is sovereign and the referendum was only "advisory". Parliament was never legally obligated to follow it.

Well, "they"--Cameron and Remainers--thought it did, but then they never figured it would get challenged since they all expected to win.

Probably best not to think too much on Mad Jeremy's motives.

He does not.

The Guardian wrote:UK universities draw up plans for EU campuses ahead of Brexit

British universities are considering plans to open branches inside the European Union in an effort to soften the blow of Britain’s exit, as they struggle to navigate new challenges in regulation and funding.

As hundreds of thousands of students across the UK prepare for their first week of lectures and seminars, university leaders, juggling the threat of Brexit, punishing new government appraisals and increased competition both inside and outside the sector, say they are facing a severe period of uncertainty and higher risks over the next 12 months.

The Guardian spoke to vice-chancellors, senior staff and students to assess the state of British universities. A period of huge growth in recent years, fuelled by tuition fees, has provided them with funds to expand significantly – and go on a multibillion-pound spending spree on new facilities and buildings – though there are fears students are paying too much of a price.

The steady increase in the number of people attending university has come in spite of mounting debts among students. Graduates now leave higher education with an average debt of £44,000, compared with £16,000 for those who graduated five years previously.

Now university leaders say they expect that Brexit will make student and staff recruitment much more difficult, cutting off EU research and funding and probably constricting the flow of EU students, who have been the fastest growing proportion of young undergraduates while the number of 18-year-olds in the British population has been shrinking.

The House of Lords has passed the Brexit bill, paving the way for the government to trigger Article 50 so the UK can leave the EU.

Peers backed down over the issues of EU residency rights and a meaningful vote on the final Brexit deal after their objections were overturned by MPs.

The bill is expected to receive Royal Assent and become law on Tuesday.

The BBC's Laura Kuenssberg said this would leave Theresa May free to push the button on withdrawal talks.

The prime minister could theoretically invoke Article 50, which formally starts the Brexit process, as early as Tuesday.

However, Downing Street sources have said this will not happen this week and the PM is expected to wait until the end of the month to officially notify the EU of the UK's intention to leave, thus beginning what is expected to be a two-year process.

Scottish independence: Nicola Sturgeon to seek second referendum

She will ask the Scottish Parliament next Tuesday to request a Section 30 order from Westminster.

The order would be needed to allow a fresh legally-binding referendum on independence to be held.

Prime Minister Theresa May has so far avoided saying whether or not she would grant permission.

Responding to Ms Sturgeon's announcement, Mrs May said a second independence referendum would set Scotland on course for "uncertainty and division" and insisted that the majority of people in Scotland did not want another vote on the issue.

She added: "The tunnel vision that SNP has shown today is deeply regrettable.

"Instead of playing politics with the future of our country, the Scottish government should focus on delivering good government and public services for the people of Scotland. Politics is not a game."

I guess Brexit is now official. Or at least the process has officially begun. Now two years of negotiations IIRC.

Well, I do not know. They lost an independence vote a little over two years ago. Now, ironically, the EU leadership helped out the UK and Cameron by making it clear that if Scotland gained her independence there was zero chance the EU would let Scotland in. That, with the obvious economic hurdles, sank independence I think.

The economic hurdles remain.

What I find interesting is if the EU would consider letting in an independent Scotland just to spite the UK. In fact, the EU may use it as leverage in negotiations with the UK. Simply stating that it would consider admitting an independent Scotland may push enough numbers to support a new referendum. That is speculation on my part.

Certainly EU can do that, but Spain would not be too thrilled with the idea since it would open itself up for balkanization as well.

True, but I think as a part of the EU they could make sure it only applied to this "one-time" sort of thing. Scotland . . . well, the SNP . . . has been bitching about wanting to remain in the EU or have some sort of relationship, a veto, anything, which about approaches both of our demands to have access to Biance's panties.

Just . . . not . . . happening.

SNP is more "Bolshy" than even Labour at this point, so an SNP-Run Scotland will want all of the benefits of socialism without having the means to pay for any of it. Who will pay the taxes that will fund their national health, for example? Back when he was "First Minister" and all of that, Alexander Salmon promised that the oil in North Sea and the like would somehow fund Scotland to independence.

Then oil prices fell.

As much as my Celtic background and general desire to upset my British colleagues would make me like to see a "Free Scotland," is it really economically viable? Seriously? It is sort of like Maine or Montana wanting her independence. Nice and all of that but then what?

Now here is the problem: I am about 0-157 in predicting such things: see thoughts on the likelihood of voting in an incompetent 8 years ago and then . . . heh . . . HA! . . . HA!HA!HA! Trump! So I do not know. I think the UK is influential enough that the EU and her will make a mutually beneficial deal--maybe like the one Canada has. This will convince the majority of Scotland to stay.

But then I turned off a minor game to watch a Star Trek Classic marathon. . . . :|

With the crash in oil prices I doubt Scotland will vote to go anywhere. The independence movement figured they'd live off of oil revenues like Norway can, and that doesn't look viable these days. There's only so much prosperity to be had herding sheep.

ABC wrote:Why is Gibraltar caught in the middle of the Brexit debate?

The European Council has suggested giving Spain a veto over Gibraltar's future trade relations within the bloc during Brexit negotiations.

The territory, located on the southern tip of Spain, has been under British rule for more than 300 years.

The Council's proposal has sparked outrage in the United Kingdom, with one politician going so far as to claim it could lead to war between the two nations.
[…]
Neighbouring Spain has been trying to regain control of Gibraltar since it ceded the territory to Britain in 1713.

While it's not making an explicit claim for the land as part of recent Brexit negotiations, it did issue a formal request in October for joint sovereignty over the British territory, repeating a demand made on the day Britain voted to "Brexit".

This time around the European Council has proposed giving Spain the power to veto any trade deal between Britain and the EU that involves Gibraltar.

That would give Madrid sway over the fate of the enclave once Britain has left the bloc and the status of its overseas territory is no longer an internal EU matter.

But it would not give Spain sovereignty over the region — it remains under British control.

Technically Spain and every other EU country already has "veto power" over the whole deal, or so I've heard.

I think so, but I have not researched it, which, of course, means I can now spew paragraphs of speculation on it and YOU CANNOT ARGUE SINCE ALLCAPS!!1!

More seriously, I do believe that the "trigger" brought about a two-year period of negotiation. If, after two years, there is no completed deal, the leaving nation and/or EU can request an extension, but there is no obligation for either side to agree to such an extension. If not then the two are separated with no deals and everyone is scrambling. I do not think that is in either the UK or EU's interest. If Spain wants to throw a tantrum, I think other EU countries can find ways to shut her up . . . unless they like using Spain as leverage.

In other words, I have no idea what the fuck will happen at this stage so let me offer 37 ["37?!"--Ed.] possible outcomes based on whether or not spark's Moon is in Uranus and look! Shiny thing! I like shiny things! The Patriots were at Opening Day and Tom Brady and Gronk! and JAMES WHIIIITTEEE were there but not His Merciful Dark Hoodie who, apparently, was someplace else, but NOT at Foxborough where Adriane "I'll Give You Somethin' to Cry About!" Peterson was visiting which has led many to speculate that this was just leverage on Blount to sign a "Team Friendly" deal.

. . . since I see no reason to start a new thread, the PM has called for a snap election in order to improve her majority behind Brexit negotiations.

If the polls hold as they are now, this may destroy Labour, at least finally force out Mad Jeremy. It will also be seen as a referendum on Nicola Sturgeon's attempt to have another referendum on Scottish Independence. See, her SNP won every seat but three in Scotland--Labour, Tory, Social Liberal Demosomethings all have one. IF she loses seats--but keeping the lion's share--that might be seen as a repudiation of her demand for a referendum. If she were to somehow pick up those last three seats, that would be good for the SNP, obviously, but the economy is down in Scotland.
