I think another thing that fucked it up for May was the fact that being the party in power and having a several terrorist attacks on your watch, including one just few days before the election, has got to make it harder to convince people that you are the party that will keep them safe.

Normally, I would take exception to that, Nyarl, demanding The Captain [PBUH--Ed.] place you in the Box for a week, your retro-banning "for the good of Skepticism," then force you to listen to hours of Bill Belichick interviews such as from today:
Reporter Babe: After everything you've achieved, what is your next goal?

His Merciful Dark Hoodie: A good day of practice.

RB: Well . . . beyond that?

HMDH: I imagine we'll have corrections.
But May was the Home Secretary for like the last 6ish years--under the five years of the previous coalition and about a year of Cameron's majority government. So who ran counter-terrorism? Further, every one of the last three attacks were committed by "known individuals." Fair or not, they were known by "her people." There is a whole debate on how to deal with such "known threats" which is a topic in and of itself.

She may have been punished for that.

We ["We?"--Ed.] did not see this, but according to a number of people, she ran a campaign like Hillary: she expected to win. She ran it badly. Like the Failcons and Hillary, she was up 25 points--no . . . seriously . . . some polls put her and her party that high over Labour--in the fourth quarter just seven weeks ago when she declared the election.

It all evaporated.

She is going to get blamed. The only question is who replaces her. The DUP has to agree. Funnily enough, at the current numbers, a Tory + DUP does not cut it. It would be 223. She needs 226.

I blame Hal.

Funny, I was going to "quote" that with a MEANIE to Gram, but even the BBC has been laughing at "how bad Jeremy is with a high-five!"

As they remind: he lost. He just lost less badly than predicted. I suppose a 'murican equivalent--USA!USA!USA!--would be if Hillary won and the Republicans took 2/3rds of both houses thereby making them able to over-ride vetoes and even Impeach/Convict. A Pyrrho Pyrrhic victory.

Right now, Tories have 315 with 4 seats to be determined. Assuming the 10 DUP join them in some coalition, they need one more seat. If that does not happen, they have to get Some Random Slob.

Now the problem is that Labour cannot possibly gain a majority--they will not sign on to Scottish independence and all of the other Whack-Job ideas of smaller parties. Still, it is a problem.

Conservatives just reached the magic number 316 which is significant in that if the DUP gives their 10 votes to the Conservatives, they have a working majority.

Sinn Fein has about 7 seats, but they never actually send them to Westminster as a protest. Effectively what this means is that a majority is 3 or 4 seats less than 326. (Ironically that would seem to work to the DUP's advantage in this case).

That is basically it. It seems they will, for now, give support for "supply and confidence," as in support the government in money bills and motions of confidence that will keep it in power.

Other matters?

Theresa May has won an enormous Pyrrhic Victory and it's difficult to see her remaining as P.M. for very long; the Tory knives will be being sharpened as I type. So, what happens as and when the next election is called? One of the vagaries of our political system is that votes don't always turn into seats but, if you look at the table below, it's easy to see just how close Labour came to being the largest party this time and how small a swing they'd need next time to be in with a chance of a parliamentary majority; the results in many marginal seats were agonisingly close.

While we're at it, is there really much of an ideological difference between Lib Dems and Labour?

Or is it just a question of being (or claiming to be) a better lot of politicians?

The interesting thing is how her personality so destroyed an up to 20 point lead. Some Fool [You.--Ed.] shut up! posted at the announcement that the leads not in just general popularity polls, but in actual constituencies, suggested an extinction-level loss for Labour. The Tories felt confident to attack areas "traditionally Labour."

Imagine Republicans spending money in Massachusetts or, better, San Fransisco or Los Angeles.

She ran a very bad campaign. This has become clear even from her supporters. To wit, she declared that older people with means should pay more/get less than those without. Shocking. Politically? Stupid. That is something you do AFTER you win a massive majority.

So she changed position.

I also think there was residual butt-hurt over Brexit. Brexit was a "popular vote" not dependent on constituencies. Many rightly criticize Cameron for calling it, but he made the promise to do so to keep his "Exit-Eurosceptics" in line. I, and others, criticized him for resigning after the narrow loss. I do not think it was necessary; however, I do not know if the Old Men who inform "your time is up" to Conservative leaders met with him and, if you take his word for it, he was so against it he could not see how honestly he could negotiate for it.

Fine.

So who did the Conservatives have instead? Loud Brexiters with baggage and an old bag Theresa--which is what has been seen as--who is a Hard-Soft Brexiter depending on the day.

She did well beating up Mad Jeremy at the Dispatch Box, but do you celebrate a boxer who beats up a Special Needs Kid? Oddly enough, the SNP leader in the House--Angus McTavishhagishwhateverNoGoingtoWorkHereAnymore--tended to score more points against her with his simple questions as opposed to Mad Jeremy's rambling diatribes and "I have here a letter from Mary Butt-Fuck, a pensioner and whore from Scarsborrow, who wants answers about East Enders."

I do not think Cameron would have run as bad of a campaign. Hell, he led the Tories to increases, then a majority as in "most votes," then made sure that the LD were blamed for anything "bad" and watch Labour lose Scotland and get stuck with Mad Jeremy.

Like Mitt Romney, he probably wishes he "stayed about a bit."

Also damning--according to various British sources--was the terrorist attacks. One might think that such would hurt Labour given Mad Jeremy's love of terrorists like Hamas, Castro, his Anti-Semitism, blah . . . blah. But "The Ol' Mare" was, as I previously pontificated, Home Secretary for years. You could, legitimately, blame her.

What will be interesting is "who" will replace her. She could have very well done real damage to the Conservatives that no one predicted prior to the election: if the Tories stay in a dichotomy of "Strict Brexit" and "Soft Brexit" choosing one--most likely the former--pisses off the DUP and probably everyone else and pushes more people to Labour even if his own Parliamentary party hates him and he is a fool.

Fools get elected.

There are ideological differences, largely with the Liberal Democrats shying well away from anything "socialist" and strongly pro-European.

Some good answers here.

I wonder how many Brits are considering if they would be better off going back to watery tarts lobbing scimitars as a basis for government.
