Right, but I'm guessing someone involved argued, "fake but accurate" in that case, hence the meme. Is there similar here?
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

TIME put the photo on the cover with the claim that she was taken from her mother.

Right... that's the original misleading story.

Here's what I'm talking about:

CBS:
*posts misleading story*
"Hey, that's false evidence!"
Response: "Okay, that was fake evidence, but it really happened just the same!"
("Fake but Accurate")

Time:
*posts misleading story*
"Hey, that's misleading!"
Response: Correction of misleading claims.

Unless someone's claiming even now that the child really was separated from her parents despite a false photo, I don't see how it's supposedly "Fake but Accurate"

I think you are being far too literate with this analogy. In both CBS and TIME you've had journalist who were so biased they were willing to publish articles/run stories without doing their due diligence their credibility be damned. And these weren't some blogs either but leading media and news sources for the country. It's just not easy for me to dismiss events like that.

Intentionally misleading people with clickbait headlines, misleading photos, and wrong facts is FakeNews.

With most of these "errors", there was really no attempt to verify in the first place since it was painting by numbers to fit a narrative.

FoxNews did this for so long under Obama that the joke was "FauxNews". Suddenly people are being pendantic about fakery.

"accurate" is sorta misleading I think.

The original story was with Dan Rather who reported on a story that was just fake. So easily dismissed that some fat guy in his mom's basement blew his cover. Rather said something to the effect that the story was fake but accurate in that we all know that Bush jr. sucks so anything that reflets that fact is accurate. Accurate in import if not in actual facts.

Now we know that Trump is eating babies so any story (or Tale, as they used to be known) that vilifies Trump and extols the virtues of the illegals is "true".

see what I mean?

I think Rather argued, and foolishly, that the particular claim about Bush was literally true even though the evidence turned out to be faked. I never took "fake but accurate" to mean anything different or more nebulous than that.

Russian Bots Linked To Viral Twitter Attacks On ‘Hateful’ Dems
Huffington Post
It what may be an early onslaught of Kremlin-linked Twitter attacks ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, Russia bots appear to be fueling a wave of criticism against Democrats in part over a lack of “civility” and intimidation in political confrontations, according to bot trackers.

Attacks with the hashtag #WalkAway purport to be from a “grassroots” wave of one-time Democrats who have left the party in part because they say they are so incensed by the hateful and divisive behavior of party members. The message is to “walk away” from ugly confrontations, “intolerance” and hate — and from the Democratic Party.

...
If true, I'm guessing a lot of the stupider anti-Republican stuff is also Russian 'bots.

Hey! I play that game too, though not on Twitter.

You know, what with being a regular poster on both Free Republic and Democratic Underground.

No I don't try to get them to see reason, I get banned enough (especially at DU) without that. :BigGrin3:

Danish Man Is First Person Sentenced Under Malaysia's Anti-Fake-News Law
A Danish citizen in Malaysia has pleaded guilty to maliciously publishing fake news by posting a YouTube video critical of police, making him the first person punished under the country's new, controversial Anti-Fake News Act.

Salah Salem Saleh Sulaiman, 46, is a citizen of Denmark. He posted on YouTube on April 21, after a Palestinian lecturer was shot and killed in Kuala Lumpur.

In the video, Sulaiman "claimed he was with the Palestinian victim during the shooting and made countless calls to the police who arrived the scene 50 minutes later," Malaysia's The Star reports.

But police say their records show that a patrol car was on the scene eight minutes after the shooting, according to Reuters. Sulaiman was charged with maliciously publishing fake news.

Sulaiman, who did not have a lawyer, pleaded guilty. He was fined just over $2,500, but because he could not pay the fine, he will serve a month in jail, Reuters says.

To be honest, for most purposes it scarcely needs to be good enough to be convincing. Most of the desired effect will be to have partisan sites report on its existence, somewhat bury the link to the video itself, give it a good screenshot, and let the news spread through the echo chambers. By the time the word gets out that the video is faked, enough people will believe it without looking and dismiss any claims to the contrary.

Having precisely convincing imaging and voice won't actually improve the effectiveness of it that much. Hell you could probably do the job with an obvious fake, such as the Biden video with the pervy voiceovers.

"Here I am standing at a rally of inbred retards who support RACISTS and TREASON. And for some reason they are giving me the finger. Shame on America." -CNN

I think they win the FakeNews tripe crown for being such crybabies. Zucker has turned them into an activist network that _tries_ to be _part_ of the story instead of reporting on it. Hence Acostas outbursts during sensitive geopolitical events. Oh, those are fine by the way. But CNN sucks chants show how low we are as a people.

Very Fake News.

Interesting, So how do we define Fake News?

Fake news: What exactly is it – and how can you spot it?
"Fake news" was not a term many people used two years ago, but it is now seen as one of the greatest threats to democracy, free debate and the Western order.
:dramatic drum-fill:
As well as being a favourite term of Donald Trump, it was also named 2017's word of the year, raising tensions between nations, and may lead to regulation of social media.

And yet, nobody can agree on what it is, the extent of the problem, and what to do about it. Here's everything you need to know.
Most of the rest is behind a pay/advertisment wall (Alas, I don't subscribe to the Telegraph so...)

In closing, I leave a link to: The Highly-Anticipated 2017 Fake News Awards
