China and the US, bros despite the hot air

China and the United States 'agree to greater cooperation' in curbing North Korea's nuclear ambitions

Wilbur Ross, the commerce secretary, said the two world leaders have agreed to a 100-day plan for trade talks to boost US exports and reduce the country's trade deficit with China.

Mr Trump said that he had developed "an outstanding" relationship with his Chinese counterpart. He added that: "Lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away."

Mr Xi, who was hosted at Mar-a-Lago, Mr Trump's 126-room palatial private members club in Florida, commented that the encounter was "very unique" and that it had an "especially important meaning for the future development of China-US relations".

Mr Trump accepted an invitation to travel to China at some point in 2017.

Mar-a-lago diplomacy seems to be working well with Asia. Then again, Trump knew it would since he's a hotelier and casino man.

Figures that Donald Rump would get along with ass-rapists.
"It is not I who is mad! It is I who is crazy!" -- Ren Hoek

"[... it seems most strange that... ] the Creator of Heaven and Earth resorted to the womb of a certain Jewish lady, grew there for nine months and was born as an infant, and afterwards grew up and was betrayed into the hands of his enemies who sentenced him to death and executed him, and that afterwards... he came to life and returned to his original place. The mind of a Jew, or any other person, simply cannot tolerate these assertions. If you have listened all your life to the priests who have filled your brain and the marrow of your bones with this doctrine, and it has settled into you because of that accustomed habit. [I would argue that if you were hearing these ideas for the first time, now, as a grown adult], you would never have accepted them." -- Rabbi Moses ben Nahman, defending the Talmud at the Disputation of Barcelona, July 1263.

Trump's Honeymoon With China Ends as Dialogue Turns Frosty

Economic talks end with no joint statement from two countries
Ross says trade imbalance not driven by market forces

The brief honeymoon between the world’s two largest economies appears to be over.

Three months ago, President Donald Trump had warm words for his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping after the two leaders bonded at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Within weeks, the Trump administration was touting early wins in talks with China, including more access for U.S. beef and financial services as well as help in trying to rein in North Korea.

Now, the two sides can barely agree how to describe their disagreements.

High-level economic talks in Washington broke up Wednesday with the two superpowers unable to produce a joint statement. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross scolded China over its trade imbalance with the U.S. in his opening remarks, and then both sides canceled a planned closing news conference.

Both sides later made separate statements following the talks. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Ross said China "acknowledged our shared objective to reduce the trade deficit which both sides will work cooperatively to achieve." China’s foreign ministry issued a reciprocal statement, saying both sides agree to start "constructive cooperation" to narrow the trade gap.
"The Trump administration may have had unrealistic expectations of what China will do to balance trade," said Shen Jianguang, chief Asia economist at Mizuho Securities Asia Ltd. in Hong Kong. "Now it is the start of real hard negotiations."

At opening remarks by the two sides on Wednesday, Ross complained about the trade gap with China in unusually blunt terms. While U.S. exports to China have grown in recent years, imports from the Asian country have expanded even faster, leading to a $309 billion trade deficit, Ross said.

“If this were just the natural product of free-market forces, we could understand it, but it’s not,” Ross said, as Wang looked on. “So it’s time to rebalance in our trade and investment relationship in a more fair, equitable and reciprocal manner.”

In his opening remarks, Wang called cooperation “a realistic choice” for both countries, while adding his own view of how the U.S.-China relationship should proceed.

“Dialogue cannot immediately address all differences, but confrontation will immediately damage the interests of both,” Wang said, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.

Hey, look at this. Now there is something after all. Something kind of significant too.

New agreement will allow US rice exports to China

China has agreed to allow imports of rice from the US for the first time.
The agreement gives US farmers access to the world's biggest rice consumer, with China importing about 5 million tonnes last year.
It follows trade talks between the two countries that resulted in little progress on other issues.
While China opened its rice market in 2001, a lack of protocols on pests and plant diseases effectively stopped imports taking place.
Inspections
The organisation representing the US rice industry said the new agreement was the most complex of its kind, and set strict standards for US exporters to protect against the introduction of certain pests to China.
USA Rice added it would work with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to make sure the industry complied with the rules.
"We know China wants to send a team here to inspect mills and facilities certified to ship to China, and we are working with USDA to make that happen in the quickest and most efficient way," said Carl Brothers, chairman of the USA Rice International Trade Policy Committee.
'Exceptional opportunity'
US authorities and the industry have both hailed the agreement as a huge win.
"This market represents an exceptional opportunity today, with enormous potential for growth in the future," said US Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue.
According to OECD projections, the average person in China will consume 75kg of rice a year by 2024, compared with an average of 13kg in North America and 5kg in Europe.
USA Rice said China consumes the equivalent of the entire US annual output every two weeks.
A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.

Didn't we do something like this with wheat and Russia a few decades ago?

I seem to recall there was an embargo (because Russia invaded Afghanistan),
so the US stopped shipping wheat to Russia, which in turn left the wheat farmers up a creek.

Well, hopefully history won't repeat.
Then Skank Of America could start in...

And that's why these sorts of deals can be bad if either side decides to play games or politics with it.

The United States grain embargo against the Soviet Union was enacted by Jimmy Carter in January 1980 in response to the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. It remained in effect until Ronald Reagan ended it in 1981 upon taking the office of president. American farmers felt the brunt of the sanctions, while the Soviet Union was not affected.[citation needed] During the presidential election campaign of 1980, Republican nominee Ronald Reagan promised to end the embargo, while the incumbent Democratic nominee, Jimmy Carter, was not willing to do so.[1]

Even though it says "citation needed" it sounds right from an economics perspective. The article goes on to say they got it from South America instead.

A smart thing would be to have a strategic food reserve too.

Politico wrote:Trump says he'll help Chinese company that violated U.S. sanctions

President Donald Trump signaled Sunday he would help out a Chinese phone-maker that has been banned from accessing U.S. technology, a top priority of Chinese trade negotiators coming to Washington later this week for talks.

The Commerce Department imposed the harsh penalty just last month against ZTE, one of China's biggest tech companies, after it was found to have violated U.S. sanctions by selling equipment to Iran and North Korea.

But Trump is softening his stance toward the company as he seeks to strengthen his relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, a key player in the upcoming summit with North Korea at which Trump hopes to score a major foreign policy victory, according to two people familiar with his position.

“President Xi of China, and I, are working together to give massive Chinese phone company, ZTE, a way to get back into business, fast,” the president wrote on Twitter. “Too many jobs in China lost. Commerce Department has been instructed to get it done!”
