And it's to the Indian independence leader no one had heard of!
The ultimate mastermind: liberating ~ 1 billion people and nobody notices!
Maybe he is remembered because of...
...
He, more than anyone else in post-independence India, realized the crucial role that civil services play in administering a country, in not merely maintaining law and order, but running the institutions that provide the binding cement to a society. He, more than any other contemporary of his, was aware of the needs of a sound, stable administrative structure as the lynchpin of a functioning polity. The present-day all-India administrative services owe their origin to the man’s sagacity and thus he is regarded as Father of modern All India Services.

Ah, not the “father of his country”, but the “father of his country’s bureaucracy”. Makes sense who the bureaucracy builds a 600 foot statue to.

It's not like India has any pressing social problems or poverty to fix, so they have lots of resources with which to build a 600' statue honoring the bureaucracy.

Spoiler:
"Kabouter Buttplug" caused a bit of a stir at first, apparently. The actual name of the statue is "Santa Claus" (it's supposed to be Santa holding up a Christmas tree), it was made by an American artist called Paul McCarthy.

Having been commissioned by the Internationale Beelden Collectie to make the statue, McCarthy's 'Santa Claus' was bought by the city of Rotterdam, who intended to install it next to De Doelen, a concert venue and convention centre in central Rotterdam. However, after some protest from people who felt it was obscene because it looks like a gnome holding up a buttplug (hence the nickname "Kabouter Buttplug"), it was temporarily moved to a museum as a form of compromise.

They did end up taking it back from the museum and placing it on the Eendrachtsplein, after having been carried there by a parade.

Indian farmers fume at $430m cost of Gujarat statue

On 31 October India will unveil the world's tallest statue, which has cost hundreds of millions of dollars. BBC Gujarati's Roxy Gagdekar spoke to local farmers who say they are aghast that the government has spent so much money on it while they struggle to make ends meet.

The statue is about air pressure and vacuum experiments carried out by Otto von Guericke.
In 1657, he machined two 20-inch diameter hemispheres and pumped all the air out of them, locking them together with a vacuum seal. The air pressure outside held the halves together so tightly that sixteen horses, eight harnessed to each side of the globe, could not pull the halves apart. It would have required more than 4,000 pounds of force to separate them.
Magdeburg, Germany.

That works out to just 500 pounds per horse on either side. Some of those horse weren't pulling their weight.

Which is probably best since had they succeeded it would be like letting of a rope in tug-of-war.
Spoiler:
If they'd have given them a running start it would have been easy.

I'd be more impressed if crowds of people could climb up inside and look out the top, just like The Statue of Liberty. :coolspecs:

Huh, I guess India really needed the 98 million pounds of international aid that the UK is giving it this year.
