The Jackson Magnolia

Postby Pyrrho » Fri Dec 29, 2017 11:57 am

Because it's trending in the news or something, with alarmist headlines about Trump and Melania and the tree, I guess. I dunno.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-ne ... 180967657/

Officials are particularly concerned because visitors and members of the press often stand in front of the tree when President Donald Trump leaves the White House on Marine One. A strong gust of wind whirled up by the helicopter could send the tree’s delicate limbs toppling down.

It was ultimately First Lady Melania Trump who made the call to cut back the Jackson Magnolia. “Mrs. Trump personally reviewed the reports from the United States National Arboretum and spoke at length with her staff about exploring every option before making the decision to remove a portion of the Magnolia tree,” Stephanie Grisham, a spokesperson for Melania Trump told CNN’s Bennett. Trump has asked that wood from the tree be preserved.

The fear exists that a large branch could fall on the press corps that gather under it.

Another example of kicking the can into Trump's corner. :)

Documentation reviewed by CNN revealed the Jackson magnolia has had apparent damage as far as five decades back. Three trunks of the tree grew from the base—tangling together in a mess of shared bark. One of those trunks was removed, leaving an exposed cavity that was filled with cement. Back in the 1970s, this was the standard procedure in this circumstance. The concrete, however, permanently damaged the tree. By 1981, a large pole and cable system were installed and still hold up the tree today.

The "Jackson" magnolia? As in, "trail of tears" Jackson? Why aren't we pulling it down already?

When I saw pictures of the tree, I thought, well of course that should be removed.

It also occurred to me that headline writers were trying to make the decision seem controversial with headlines like "Melania Trump orders removal of historic White House Tree." The Park Service made the recommendation, she just signed off on it because I guess the "Office of the First Lady" (yes, there is such a thing) is in charge of groundskeeping decisions at the White House.

They apparently have saplings taken from that same tree that could be replanted in the same spot.

What does the first lady get paid? I expect nothing. Where are our labor laws?

Minimum wage at least.

Here's what pisses me off. I have a dead tree in my back yard. The wife says cut it down because it is dead.

Do I have to have permission from ed?

I think that technically the First Lady doesn't have to do anything. She could delegate everything to her staff. Or the president could (technically these people work for the president as White House employees).

Reminds me of an OOOOOOLLLLLLLDDDDDD joke where a kid in Boston sees a dog attacking a family, he tosses a rock that brains said mutt. A Boston Pravda Globe reporter comes up!

Reporter: Awesome! "Young Boston Red Sox Fan Saves Family from Rabid Dog!"

Boy: Well, I'm not from Boston. . . .

R: "Young Local Boston Red Sox Fan Saves Family from Rabid Dog!"

B: "Actually, I'm from New York. I'm a Yankees fan."
