Lies, damned lies, and statistics.

Climate change -- Did "they" just admit it's all left wing BS?

Post by Abdul Alhazred » Thu Feb 08, 2018 4:38 pm

Climate Change Isn’t Just About the Planet
The Nation
It’s about justice: racial, social, socioeconomic, reproductive, and environmental. It’s about immigration reform, LGBTQIA+ rights, and religious freedom.

...
I will stipulate that climate change is real.

This approach guarantees nothing of substance will ever be done about it.

Doomed.

That's a lot of hot air for someone who purports to be concerned about global warming.

I think I need a gif of an inverted pyramid of bandwagons balancing on one gravy train.

(squints)

I really don't want to read that... fuck it... I'll do it.

Eh. It's a student essay. The main point is that climate change will fuck over the poor and otherwise marginalized people most, which, well, of course. Having money, power, and privilege tends to make adversity easier to overcome.

The essay badly needs an editor. That sentence you cite sounds bad in context and alone sounds totally vapid. If it were in terms of climate change not only having a physical effect but a social effect, then it sounds a little less stoned and the essay more focused.

Global warming is real, kind of like atheism.

But the commies and hippies always have to try to Atheism+ everything they touch.

It isn't enough to believe or disbelieve, you have to join this religion and pass loyalty tests on hating all the right things.

Raising taxes to stop climate change will affect poor and marginalized people the most too.

Beg pardon.

It's in The Nation.

That is a bigger "they" credential than even being a full professor. :coolspecs:

If The Nation isn't "they", who is?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Nation
The Nation is the oldest continuously published weekly magazine in the United States, and the most widely read weekly journal of progressive political and cultural news, opinion, and analysis. It was founded on July 6, 1865, as a successor to William Lloyd Garrison's The Liberator,[2] with the stated mission to make an earnest effort to bring to the discussion of political and social questions a really critical spirit, and to wage war upon the vices of violence, exaggeration, and misrepresentation by which so much of the political writing of the day is marred.[3] It is published by The Nation Company, L.P., at 33 Irving Place, New York City.[4] and associated with The Nation Institute.

On a scale of "Handmade fliers left under windshields" to "NYT Op-Ed piece" (or whatever you think belongs at the top of that scale)... where does this rate compared to say, HuffPo contributor column?
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

I'd rate it as NYT Op-Ed piece; or any Op-Ed since that's exactly what it is.

AGW isn't going to be solved by caring more about the Great Unwashed. Steve Shallow, student and budding author can't see the forest for his specially privileged fat fingers. He's not focused on the causes, he's mistakenly focused on the consequences. "We should care because LGBTQ and rights, and fuck-all."

No, no NO! If we haven't already passed some tipping point, AGW can only be solved by not blowing greenhouse gas laden smoke up each others asses at every fucking opportunity. And that's what Steve Shallow, who has a Masters in Whiny Little Bitch is doing.

Harumph!

True, but not all are equal.

I would not worry so much about an opinion piece in the NY Post, for example. That gets a little closer to the lower end, I think.

Why would anyone worry about an opinion piece? More to the point a sentence from one?

The idea that social justice and climate change have a degree of connection is obvious. Part of the lack of the political will to do anything is, put generally, that few people benefiting from ignoring it give much of a shit if Bangladesh is under water in twenty years. If people did care, then there would be the political will to do more.

How exactly is this a difficult concept?

I would submit that most desirable and threatened ocean property in the world is owned, or access to it is owned, by very wealthy. When we are talking about "saving" those places, we should also not pretend that very wealthy do not stand to benefit from it. Look at Jamaica where the locals have very few places where they can access the beach since it's been slowly getting acquired by wealthy individuals, cruise companies, and private resorts.

The Nation is the periodical of influence among self described radical progressives (as Hitchens described himself when he wrote for them).

Yes, The Nation choosing to print it is meaningful.
