Business Insider wrote:The backlash that never happened: New data shows people actually increased their Facebook usage after the Cambridge Analytica scandal
What the title says; and:
[…] Zuckerberg has already suggested that Facebook has seen little impact from Cambridge Analytica in terms of user engagement. He told Congress an immaterial number of users deleted their accounts as a result of the scandal.

No surprise there. I never thought that more than a handful of activists would "#DeleteFacebook" over this. Certainly fewer that the number of new users Facebook typically would add over the same period of time.

Interesting RadioLab podcast about how Facebook goes about policing its content.

The short version is that the rules are constantly changing and the company comes under a lot of pressure to change its rules in one way or another.

https://www.wnycstudios.org/story/post-no-evil

Like, how do you define nudity? The simplest definition would be the easiest to enforce. But what about breastfeeding? Should there be an exception for breastfeeding? What about fine art?

Then there's hate speech where it really gets weird.

Who do think is a protected class from hate speech on Facebook?

A) white men
B) black children
C) Jewish shopkeepers
D) women drivers
E) all of the above
F) none of the above

Really interesting podcast. Whether you agree with any of it or not.

Should exceptions be made if something violates the guidelines but is "newsworthy"?

If they start making exceptions for "newsworthiness", does that make them a publisher and not merely a "platform"?

Who actually reviews flagged content? Often it is Philippinos being paid $2.50/hour. Some of them would deliberately sabotage the system as a way to protest low wages. Others would just rely on their own gut instead of the criteria created by the company.

So there is no Zuckerbergian master mind control plan?
Just a vaguely LIBBERUL nerd-businessman with no clue?

He started with free speech modified by a little basic obvious censorship of illegal activities and porn. Because that seemed a good business model at the time.

But now he is appeasing anyone who yells, so there can be no consistency even of an ideological "who whom" variety.

There certainly are plenty in the biz who really believe the mind control party line, but maybe not The Zuck?

Basically, yes. They started with the idea that they would only censor illegal stuff and porn and super violent or gory stuff.
They got too big to be immune to politics. Then came the demands to censor certain stuff, not censor certain other stuff, and so on.

I think they just don't realize that Facebook's algorithm can figure all of that stuff out in other ways.
Accelerometers and the other sensors aren't really necessary. They can analyze your browsing history and activity on a web page, and who your friends are and stuff like that to get a pretty good idea about what sorts of ads to show you.

Google is under siege from conservatives, as a senior Republican demands an inquiry into its market dominance
  • A senior Republican senator has called on the Federal Trade Commision to investigate Google for anti-competitive behavior.
  • Orrin Hatch highlighted problematic behavior like Google prioritising its own services in search, its collection of Android location data, and its many acquisitions.
  • He said Google had cemented its dominance through collecting personal data and suggested there was little competition.
  • The letter rounds off a tough week for Google, which has also come under fire from President Donald Trump.

More blues for Mister Zuckerberg. 8)

Facebook Accused of Allowing Bias Against Women in Job Ads
The New York Times
... The employers appear to have used Facebook’s targeting technology to exclude women from the users who received their advertisements, which highlighted openings for jobs like truck driver and window installer. The charges were filed on behalf of any women who searched for a job on Facebook during roughly the past year. ...
Synopsis: Class action.

Analysis:
No allegation that Facebook did anything on purpose to discriminate, only that the technology made the discrimination possible.

See what happens when you allow people to note their various genders on their public profiles? :lmao:

On the one hand, I can vaguely see what they're saying. It is a kind of sex discrimination after all. On the other hand, I'm guessing that very few women are interested in becoming a truck driver or a window installer. The point of advertising on Facebook as opposed to TV or newspapers is that advertisers can show their ads to the people with the highest liklihood of being interested in them. I bet most male users of facebook don't get shown ads for mascara or ladies shoes, or feminine hygeine products. The advertisers don't want to waste their budget for advertising by showing their ads to people who have no interest in them.

Chrome 69 now shares your browser history with Google when you check Gmail

While Chrome 69, the latest version of Google’s popular web browser, brings some welcome changes, it also looks like it now signs you into the browser automatically when you sign in to Google websites and services, which then uploads your browsing history, as well as other information, to Google.

In previous versions of Chrome you could visit Gmail, YouTube or other Google websites and log into them without needing to be logged into the browser as well. While signing into your Google account in Chrome brings benefits, such as synchronizing your bookmarks and passwords, there are a number of privacy reasons why you’d want to keep that information stored locally on your PC, rather than share it with Google.

It also means if you’re using a shared computer to quickly browse the internet and check your emails in Gmail, you’ll want to make extra precautions to ensure that you are fully logged out when you’re finished.

This move is another step Google has taken in blurring the boundaries between its software and its services, and many people are understandably concerned.
