I still think it would be just another tax dollar boondoggle.
The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Just nearly twenty years too late, for which, of course, I blame Obama.

The Outer Space Treaty will go away as soon as there is some profit to be had by developing outer space (other than one's own satellites).

That hasn't happened yet, and in fact Trump isn't trying to make it happen.

This is reelection rhetoric only.

But seriously folks, we do have a USAF Space Command.

Why a new separate service?

Same reason the US Army Air Corps was changed to the US Air Force. So each service can be more narrowly focused.

Well OK, but about five centuries too early.

This isn't about armed humans in space, not in the foreseeable future anyway. More like developing satellites to defend against anti-satellite spacecraft.

Think about all the critical infrastructure now in space that our way of life is now dependent on - communications, weather, GPS, and spy satellites for example.

Do we not already have people assigned to manage those assets? I do not understand why a new branch of the armed forces should be necessary.

It wouldn't even be new. We currently have Joint Force Space Component under US Strategic Command. Can anyone show it doesn't work well as is?

I finally understand that Trump is essentially saying that we cannot allow a space gap.

Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

Then the existing USAF Space Command is sufficient.

The USA won't be the first to claim and defend lunar real estate as sovereign territory.

That will be whichever country is the first to set up a permanent base and exploit natural resources.

China or perhaps India.

Been there, tried that. And it's name was Ronnie. SDI indeed.

Whether or not Ronnie (or the de facto president by then Bush I) intended it that way or just got lucky, SDI was the ultimate successful bluff.

China or perhaps India.

Delivery of those natural resources in sufficient bulk for a decent ROI gonna be a bit tricky. But I suppose it plays well in certain circles.

A spy station is more likely, although the cost as compared with satellites would be a bit ridiculous.

Staging point for a trip to Mars? Sure. Yeah. Okay. 50 years from now, maybe.

Knowing how politics works, it would probably be a Bitcoin mine, once the properly-connected rich people are appointed to key positions.

However, I will wait for Duffel Blog's expert analysis.

Already looked: they are currently covering a female marine who transferred to the Airforce to get laid.

The first use of such resources would be for expanding the base without building materials shipped from Earth.
