NY Times hires a racist, proceeds to defend her

Post by Grammatron » Thu Aug 02, 2018 7:08 pm

I am sure this will end well for a news organization.

What were here racist tweets?

Coming on the heels of Rosenne and then James Gunn firings this is an odd choice.

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

IMO a serious and competent journalist should understand the power of words.

Is there an equivalent to the French saying "trouver des verges pour se faire battre" ~ finding sticks to get beaten? :lmao:

Maybe "Hoist with one's own petard."

Although checking the phrase just now, I realize I was mistake about the meaning of "petard." I always thought it was some kind of medieval halberd. And to be "hoist" was to be lanced (and raised up) with ones own weapon. This site says while I was right about the general meaning, I was wrong about the details:

Yes, my mileage does indeed vary.

When I see them defend a conservative journalist with the same passion, then maybe I will not think of their position as hypocritical.

Hmmm, I seem to recall there was something analogous in the sport of baseball recently, which was criticized by someone in the pages of the New York Times. Yeah, Abdul posted about it:

Guess what's racist? C'mon, guess.

With a Loud Ovation, Baseball Shows Its Whiteness
Carlos' Blog
We live in an age of unbridled white id.

Many days it is anything goes, baby, from the White House to the baseball stands; objecting often draws a scornful wave of the hand and a lecture on political correctness.

The latest eruption comes courtesy of Josh Hader, a 24-year-old white relief pitcher with a smoking fastball and a Twitter account filled with hideous thoughts typed when he was 17 and 18. A Hader sampler: “White Power, lol” (with an emoji of a clenched fist), “KKK,” and “I hate gay people.” He also used that vilest of words for black people.

...
Not just the one jadrool, you understand.

Baseball.
So Josh Hader, a white kid, posted racist things on Twitter. Years later he joined the Major Leagues and someone discovered his old tweets. He apologized, and received a standing ovation. I don't think I saw too many voices here suggesting that Hader should be banished from baseball.

So does Jeong deserve a second chance like Hader, or not?

You and Abdul missed a far more (infinitely more?) analogous story.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/mor ... 21ace0a870
On Tuesday afternoon, the New York Times editorial board announced that it had hired journalist and essayist Quinn Norton as its lead opinion writer on the “power, culture and consequences of technology.”

In the hours that followed, Norton indeed confronted some powerful consequences of technology.

Across Twitter, people began pointing out a slew of Norton’s tweets from years ago in which she used gay and racial slurs. Critics also lambasted Norton for referring to Andrew Auernheimer, who helps run the neo-Nazi website the Daily Stormer, as her friend.

By evening, the New York Times had announced that it was parting ways with Norton.
This is literally the same position Jeong was now hired. This action by NY Times may also have influenced someone one(s) decision to go dumpster diving in Jeongs tweets. To me NY Times comes off as hypocrites and incompetent in their vetting process. I know I am reaching but that seems like a bad sign for a journalistic and news organisation.

I don't know, but it makes me respect the modern NY Times even less.

That there is no difference other than wealth between the NYT's trolling and some random 4channer.

I see. Well, I only knew about what has been posted in this thread. It's more than a little troubling that she would refer to a Neo-Nazi as a "friend" though. A bit of a red flag there. Without spending a lot more time researching both of these people, it's a little hard for me to definitively say they are comparable.

No, it's not at all comparable. Jeong is the racist, not the friend of a racist.

White people trying sooooo hard to claim victim status.

I know those tweets help perpetuate the existing power structure that oppresses white people by normalizing harmful stereotypes about white people that have created practices and institutions that negatively affect the lives of whites.

All people that identify as white really want is to be white, that is keep in place a social structure where they hold economic and cultural dominance and impose their values on those that aren't white by casting all non-white cultural behavior as deviant and a threat to this social structure while being offended at anyone who would suggest they are doing so. So insulting that position is the same as using insults to support that position and anyone who disagrees is the real racist.

Checks out.
