What do you mean by the phrase "absolutist free-speech ethos" and was your comment not critical? If so what do you propose.
I mean, well, an absolutist free speech ethos. That there should be no interference with free speech at all by anyone ever.

The proposal? Abandoning that ethos.

I don't have draft legislation on this point, in no small part because most of this has nothing to do with government restrictions. More to do with how people get all weird when someone like youtube decides to not give a platform to people that use the platform in part to directly cause harm to innocent people. That sort of thing.

Ah, is this where we conflate violent imagery in art with speech directed to knowingly create harm against identifiable people?
If a street gang owns a rap music label and the gang's rappers call out and threaten opposing gangs in a rap song is that art or a call to harm on identifiable people?

And I can assure you there are such rap labels. This video for example, 5.8 million views and these guys have a far higher body count than Alex Jones. Still on YouTube.

Go ahead, explain how the 9th Circuit got it wrong in that decision. Here's the decision for you to pore over: https://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-9th-circuit/1655069.html

Isn't that what happens in every free speech discussions in courts, all the way up to SCOTUS?
Far be it for me to introduce Your Mom facts into the playpen, but you may enjoy Paul "Popehat" White's podcast on the very subject. Unlike the various participants, he is a First Amendment litigator, and he deals with other such litigators, usually for pro bono, in First Amendment cases.

The "first" one--which is the latest--is the one you will find interesting.

Cases do tend to involve real world facts, yes.
What cases have successfully restricted this kind of speech?
Yeah, that would be nice to do, which is the point here.
To me it reads like holding a person responsible for speech that morons take into insane directions.
Ah, is this where we conflate violent imagery in art with speech directed to knowingly create harm against identifiable people?
No.

This is where I point out that some Chicago gangster-rappers rap about turf issues and then they (and innocent bystanders) get shot; are you advocating a ban on rap music in Chicago?

I've actually read his website on occasion based on your and other's recommendations but have not not listen to his podcasts. I will check them out, thank you.

It is not bad . . . he lets the intro music go on too long not realizing how "long" 20 seconds feels when you are listening and waiting for something to happen.

I screwed up the recommendation since he is also not a webpage creator. . . . If you go to his podcast list the two you want are:
  • 1. Fire in a Crowded Theater
    2. Fighting Faiths
They sort of go together since they deal with one of the more odd yet influential members of the SCOTUS and gives the history up to Brandenburg to my recollection.

So you got nothing.
Logic fail. That's not a valid conclusion from my reply. Just because I didn't answer your question doesn't mean I don't have an answer.

So far in this thread, every time I scored a point against your objection, you moved the goalposts and (unfairly) accused me of not having refuted the new objection. Sorry, but I'm not interested in having this kind of conversation with someone who appears to be playing in bad faith.

My point stands, your defense of censorship is predicated on a double standard. I might take it more seriously if you applied the same standards to all sides. But you don't. Instead, you dissemble. Sorry, but I'm not interested in playing your game.
Uh, no. I think you're the one playing a game here. There is no goalpost moving. You can't just compare Infowars with the New York Times and say that they are both equally dishonest.
Except that I never claimed they were equally dishonest. You made that erroneous interpretation all on your own.

If by "speaking freely" you mean "using the internet to coordinate a massive and sustained campaign of intense harassment against families who lost children in a school shooting" then yeah, that's bad.
It's interesting that you complain about that, and yet you defend liberals when they harass others with "hateful" speech.

And by interesting, I mean hypocritical.

Free speech absolutism falls apart when the claim of "the cure to speech is more speech" is applied to these kinds of real world situations. It only works in the abstract.
Who has been arguing for such "absolutism"? Not me.

. . . Speaking to the Daily Mail, Jones said Wednesday, “The good news is Infowars has had the highest traffic it’s ever had – 5.6 million new subscribers in the past 48 hours – and so has my radio show.”

Jones added, “De-platforming doesn’t do anything, we already have the subscribers, it doesn’t do very much.”
OK, which is it:

  2. Jones is just spouting shit like he usually does.
  3. All of the above.
  4. None of the above.
  5. Something else.

Apparently it is now a violation of Twitter's terms of service to call someone a Nazi.

Wow. Twitter has a lot of censoring to do. It remains to be seen if they apply this criteria without their usual double standard.

5.6 million in 48 hours doesn't sound realistic to me but I have no way to independently verify his subscriber numbers.

Come on, Anax, that's ~ 2000 connections per minute (and double that as it's mostly Muricans, and they have to work, eat and sleep during these 48 hours).
