Can you believe this shit?

Post by Anaxagoras » Mon Sep 03, 2018 10:15 pm

Coming from Trump, I can't say I'm shocked, but I'm trying to imagine what the GOP/RW reaction would be if Obama had gone on Twitter and complained that the Justice Department was investigating congressional Democrats.

Trump slams Sessions on Twitter, says AG is hurting GOP in midterms (Fox News)
President Trump lashed out at Attorney General Jeff Sessions in a string of tweets on Monday, accusing him of hurting Republican chances in the upcoming midterm elections with a series of Justice Department investigations.

“Two long running, Obama era, investigations of two very popular Republican Congressmen were brought to a well publicized charge, just ahead of the Mid-Terms, by the Jeff Sessions Justice Department,” Trump tweeted. “Two easy wins now in doubt because there is not enough time. Good job Jeff.....”
He's blatantly saying the Justice Department should be playing partisan politics.

Further, not that it really matters because investigations take as long as they take, but the insider trading case happened long after Obama was out of office:
The president apparently was referring to the current investigations into GOP Reps. Duncan Hunter of California and Chris Collins of New York. Fox News has reached out to the White House for additional clarification, and the Justice Department did not immediately respond.

Hunter and his wife, Margaret, were indicted last month on charges of illegally converting $250,000 in campaign funds for personal expenses and filing false records, while Collins was indicted earlier in August on insider-trading charges. Prosecutors pinpointed the alleged insider trading to June 2017, after Trump took office.

At least Obama had the good sense not to order that shit over Twitter. :P

:notsure:

Iirc that stuff wasn't ordered by Obama or the White House but was IRS employees acting on their own initiative and then higher up people in the IRS lying about it.

So what's the vig on Jeanine Pirro being appointed Attorney General after Trump fires Sessions?

I'm not sure what you mean. Since my own memory of the time is a bit vague by now, I'm relying on that link you quoted.

Wikipedia has more information.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRS_targeting_controversy
On September 8, 2017, the Trump Justice Department declined to reopen the criminal investigation into Lois Lerner, a central figure in the controversy.[1]
FBI investigation

In January 2014, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced that it had found no evidence warranting the filing of federal criminal charges in connection with the affair. The FBI stated it found no evidence of "enemy hunting" of the kind that had been suspected, but that the investigation did reveal the IRS to be a mismanaged bureaucracy enforcing rules that IRS personnel did not fully understand. The officials indicated, however, that the investigation is continuing.[165][166][167][168]
DOJ investigation

In October 2015, the Justice Department notified Congress that there would be no charges against the former IRS official Lois Lerner or against anyone else in the IRS. The investigation found no evidence of illegal activity or the partisan targeting of political groups and found that no IRS official attempted to obstruct justice. The DOJ investigation did find evidence of mismanagement and Lerner's poor judgement in using her IRS account for personal messages but said "...poor management is not a crime."[169][170][171] In September 2017, the DOJ declined a request from the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means to reopen the investigation into Lerner's IRS activities.[172][173]
Lerner had been in the position since the Bush Administration in 2005, she wasn't an Obama appointee. Her "punishment" was that she resigned under pressure after being placed on administrative leave.

Anyway, back to the current issue:

Too bad only Republicans not running for reelection feel free to speak out on this issue.

http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4048 ... -to-settle
Trump argued that Sessions should have considered the political consequences of pursuing cases against the lawmakers, who both supported Trump early in his presidential campaign.
Seems very clear-cut to me. Unless you think the Justice Department should be politicized.

I'm not sure what you mean.
Same FBI that found no evidence against Hillary? No, wait, they did, but the Obama AG and Comey decided to fiddle with definitions of avoid prosecuting her?

The other one has bells on it.

Lerner and others were smart enough to refuse to testify before Congress or anyone.

The cogent retort with regards to this issue is that the Feds usually do not indict just before an election so as not to interfere. There is merit to that. Big If Assumption that they had enough a few months ago, then both idiots could have faced primary challenges/not ran. So they should have waited until after the election. Granted, people would whine that "they should've done BEFORE," but look at Menedez/Whatever Crocked New Jersey [Redundant.--Ed.] Senator. The Feds lost his case and chose not to refile. Technically, he is innocent. Had they waited so he would be on trial like, about, now, the outcome may have been the same, but he would have been defeated.

Trump's shitposting on twitter is always fun to watch people predictably react to.

During a republican Administration, the media playbook is to talk down the economy to undermine consumer confidence and exacerbate bear markets.

Trump wakes up every day at 5am, tweets while taking a shit, and sets the media's agenda for the day instead.

And they keep falling for it over and over and over.

And they wonder why we are finally recovering from the Bush/Obama era economically despite what they perceive as "chaos".

4 percent growth. I'm sorry you want to give Obama credit for a Lost Decade but nobody is going to believe that bullshit.

We never really recovered from the Bush years. The Obama years were just less bad. Try telling the hicks different and they'll laugh you off because they remember how stagnant job markets, raises, and salaries were. They know what their bank accounts looked like. They also remember zero economic leadership.

They aren't falling it.

The "bully pulpit" is being use to promote confidence in growth and not accept the idea what the US is doomed to 1-2 percent growth and that higher is unattainable.

This isn't just perception. All the jock carriers like Krugman said it was impossible. The hicks never believed them though, just the hallelujah chorus of defeatists who read the NYT and then go to work at the big news outlets.
