James Comey subpoenaed, willing to ‘answer all questions’ if hearing is open and public

Wonder what this is all about....
Former FBI Director James Comey tweeted on Thanksgiving morning that he had received a subpoena to testify before Congress and he indicated that he would submit willingly to the formal, legally-binding summons if the proceedings were open and public.

“Happy Thanksgiving,” Comey wrote via Twitter. "Got a subpoena from House Republicans. I’m still happy to sit in the light and answer all questions. But I will resist a ‘closed door’ thing because I’ve seen enough of their selective leaking and distortion.”

It's about Comey knowing the Democrats will never hold him accountable, that's what it's about. The Democratic Party is corrupt at the highest levels.

I was going to say, "Ha. Ha. Witnesses calling the shots. Right ... I'm sure that's how it worked when he was in charge at the FBI."

Then I remembered his "investigation" of Clinton.

Going back before the election, I can imagine that there were two thoughts uppermost in Comey's mind as they decided how to investigate the Clinton classified email violations.

1. How would Hillary respond to the investigation after she gets elected (and they all assumed she would win and reward good behavior).

2. How would Obama respond to the investigation since he is known to be complicit in Hillary's classified email violations.

I can imagine how these two considerations might influence how they did their investigation.

However, my imagination doesn't count for much since I have no way of knowing what really happened beyond what they tell us. In any case, Comey has already shown he lacks integrity and is a known liar.

House Republicans subpoena Comey, Lynch for closed-door testimony

Oh my, both Loretta and Andrew....and closed door?
House Republicans served up some subpoenas with their Thanksgiving turkey this week, issuing last-minute demands for former FBI Director James Comey and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch to appear for closed-door testimony on Dec. 3 and Dec. 4, respectively.

The subpoenas, issued Wednesday but revealed publicly Thanksgiving morning, completed the threats issued by GOP committee chairman Bob Goodlatte earlier in the week.

Comey had rejected an earlier invitation from the committee to testify privately and instead asked for a public hearing. Democrats say they prefer the hearing to be public as well.

Republicans have been investigating the FBI and Justice Department's decision-making in 2016 and 2017, contending that deep-seated anti-Trump bias among senior officials led the bureau to downplay its probe of Hillary Clinton's private email server and home in on the investigation of Trump campaign connections with Russia. Trump himself has cheered on the attacks, calling the Russia probe a "witch hunt" and contending that Comey and his inner circle were corrupt.
I am sure Comey and Loretta will insist the same thing now...some things never change.

I wonder if Loretta's little talk with 'slick' Willie (at the airport) will come up....
...
A Lynch attorney could not immediately be reached.
Then Skank Of America could start in...

So is it that Trump waited for after the mid-term elections to come through on his promise to "lock her up"?

They'll just refuse to show knowing damn well that when Democrats take over in January they'll sweep the entire thing under the rug. Democrats like their government corrupt, as long as it's their own.

Not that Trump has any influence over Republicans in Congress even though he can't order them?

Congress has no subpoena powers. If Trump goes after Hillary the Justice Dept. will do it, it sure as hell won't be from Congress.

Congress has oversight and investigative powers, and inherent within those is power to issue enforceable subpoenas. In order for congressional investigations to be effective, Congress needs the ability to compel the production of information and enforce its orders.

LawfareBlog
In Sinclair v. United States (1929), the Supreme Court ruled that Congress had a right to investigate anything related to its legislative and oversight duties, including Harry Sinclair’s personal dealings with the Secretary of the Interior. In an earlier Teapot Dome case, McGrain v. Daugherty (1927), it ruled that congressional committees could compel private citizens to testify.

It seems that Congress has always believed itself endowed with the authority to also hold people in contempt; in this case contempt of Congress. This authority was recognized by the US Supreme court in 1821 in Anderson V Dunn, and later formally added to the US criminal code in 1857.

And yet here we are with Comey refusing to testify and Congress doing nothing to compel him. And Rosenstein flat-out refusing records request from the Senate. See also Holder refusing to turn over records. What did Congress do about it? Nothing.

Maybe they technically have subpoena powers, but they don't have any power to enforce them or they don't exercise that power. I suppose they could order the Sergeant at Arms to haul Comey in, but we all know that won't happen. Comey will ignore them, the GOP will kick and scream, and then the Democrats will make it all go away.
