Bill Cosby lays it on the line

He shot back Thursday, saying his detractors were trying in vain to hide the black community's "dirty laundry."

"Let me tell you something, your dirty laundry gets out of school at 2:30 every day, it's cursing and calling each other n------ as they're walking up and down the street," Cosby said during an appearance at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition & Citizenship Education Fund's annual conference.

"They think they're hip," the entertainer said. "They can't read; they can't write. They're laughing and giggling, and they're going nowhere."

In his remarks in May at a commemoration of the anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education desegregation decision, Cosby denounced some blacks' grammar and said those who commit crimes and wind up behind bars "are not political prisoners."

"I can't even talk the way these people talk, 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... and I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk," Cosby said then. "And then I heard the father talk ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth."

Here's a shocker: Look at the poll results for CNN's poll question about this. As I look at it, ninety-eight percent of respondents agree with Cosby. I have NEVER seen such a one-sided poll at CNN.

I'm glad Bill's being so outspoken and not backing down. It's nice to see Jessee Jackson agreeing too. The poll at our local news station was 97% acceptance as well.

Hopefully he keeps this up and makes as much commotion as he can.

I am usually a big fan of Cosby's commentary, as he usually has a parental focus, which can really reach people.

Unfortunately, he also has promoted AIDS conspiracy theories (that it is an engineered disease designed to kill mostly blacks). I don't remember the context--he may only have been making a point. But I was left with the impression that he believed it.

Chris Rock said it better, and funnier, in "Bring the Pain".

gnome's first post, and still topical.

Especially this part:
Bill Cosby wrote:those who commit crimes and wind up behind bars are not political prisoners
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"
