Yea. Windows 10 works pretty much like Windows 7.

I'm about to need a new confuser, and I refuse, flatly, to buy into fucking 10.

Is one valid solution. Another far cheaper solution is one of the many flavors of Linux. Or a chromebook. If you're not a gamer, any of those will do.

The "Metro" desktop is optional in Win 10.

Works okay for me.

Don't opt in to having a Microsoft account and you won't be tracked as much.

Be sure to get the Professional version for more control over your own destiny.

Or run Win 98SE like Abdul does.

I switched to Win 7 when I got my current machine.

But I did make sure and copy all my old floppy disks to CD ROM.

Especially my browser collection. 8)

I have Windows 10 on my backup machine and it won't shut down properly. Unless I hold down the manual power button it automatically restarts every time. I've tried every fix suggested on the web up to and including a clean reinstallation but nothing works. It's driving me nuts!

Don't know what you have, apart from that update glitch everything works as it should. Just added a second monitor to my desktop and all I had to do was switching primary and secondary.

Bis repetita non placent! :x

Serious update some days ago. Desktop, no problem; laptop, ouch! (Double-clicking an image put it as wallpaper instead of opening the viewer. BTW, noticed that choosing a software as default program has become quite difficult: it's either Win inbuilt or Win store. Thanks Microsoft nanny!)

Restore + DISM + SFC cured the problem. I think that from now on I'll run both tools before any big update!

I have the latest update and have no problem choosing default software, so far as I can tell. There's no right-click open with anymore for you?

Tracking, games and general bloatware.

Don't need it. Won't buy it. Fuck 'em.

In my case it caused a nasty ankle rash. Reinstall from backup and cortisone cream pretty much cured it.

Filetype by filetype, yes. But I was referring to the choice of a default program for, e. g., all images:

But writing this I'm not so sure anymore there ever was a fileselector to pick any prog. Perhaps that's an XP feature? :?

If you right click on a file (use to be Shift + Right Click) there's an option to "Open With" where you can chose a default program to open that file with or open it with an other program just that time.

If a file has not default program associated with it then by default you will get "Open With" option by trying to run/open the file in Windows.

I know what you're referring to. It wasn't an OS feature, which is to say the OS didn't intentionally thwart this feature.

So if I installed Gimp, for example, the gimp installer would automatically set all image type files to default to gimp. When Win10 came along, it no longer allowed for programmatically selecting default for any file type by any installer; the user has to do it manually, one at a time.

I kind of like it that way. Too many programs hijacking my defaults.

I get the security feetshure, but an alert would be enough. Another Microsoft infantilization, which just happens to direct you to their store.
