Yeah I tried that and it didn't work.

Reddit solution did! :hyper:

Updated windows 10 on my laptop today via wi-fi, no problem. 8)

Updated windows professional 10 on my desktop two days ago, no problem. 8)

Updated ios on my iPad the other day, no problem. 8)

Attempted to updated osx on my Macbook Air via wi-fi and it crashed and will not restart. It's now a $1200 doorstop. I have no media from which to recover the operating system. I will attempt a clean install via wi-fi. Wish me luck.

Do you have any recommendations on how to get my Macbook Air out of its update hell?

What puzzles me is that although the iPad has sufficient computing power to develop apps for the iPad, there is no official support from Apple to do that. Instead, you must have osx and xcode on a Mac.

Grrrr. :x :x

Perhaps some day Apple will extend Playgrounds for the iPad to allow development of iPad apps on an iPad.

What astonishes me is not so much that W10 has problems (hey! 'tis Microsoft) but the sheer variety of them.

My favorite is when some annoying step fixes it for one guy and then they make everyone do it without figuring out why, to see if everyone's wasting their time.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

Doesn't surprise me at all, given that windows has to accommodate a wider variety of hardware (and software) that Microsoft has little or no control over.

My scanner coughs up a hairball from time to time now. I should see if there are any updated USB drivers.

Something for sparks:
Not upgraded to Windows 10? Microsoft offers Windows 7 users some good and bad news

MICROSOFT continues its drive to get users to switch to its latest Windows 10 software but there is some good news if you are still using Windows 7.

[…]

With so many people having yet made the switch, Microsoft has already announced that it is extending the support for this ageing software [W7] until January 14, 2020.

However, there's now more good news as the US technology giant now says users will be able to continue to get updates for Windows 7 for even longer.

In a recent post on their website, Microsoft confirmed: "As previously announced, Windows 7 extended support is ending January 14, 2020. While many of you are already well on your way in deploying Windows 10, we understand that everyone is at a different point in the upgrade process.

"With that in mind, today we are announcing that we will offer Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU) through January 2023."

Many will be pleased to hear this news but there is a catch.

Those wanting to get support for Windows 7 past the 2020 deadline will have to pay for the privilege.
And for Pyrrho:
The news of this extended support comes as a new version of Windows 10 looks set to be released next month.

Previously only known as its codename, Redstone 5, the newest iteration of Windows 10 will be rolled out as the "Windows 10 October 2018 Update".

The update will bring dramatic changes that Microsoft insists will make its software better than ever.

And something for Abdul:

💖 I've been pretty humbled by how much people love this dumb little app. I've added a few features and cleaned a few things up, notably:
  • You can now mount the disk image (on Windows 10 and macOS)
  • The app auto-updates (Windows does not, it'll stay on Windows 95)
  • You can now see the CPU and HDD working
  • You can now send Ctrl + Alt + Del and reboot the machine from the window menu

Microsoft announces app mirroring to let you use any Android app on Windows 10

Helping fill the gap left by the Windows Phone

Microsoft announced a new feature for Windows 10 today that will let Android phone users view and use any app on their device from a Windows desktop. The feature, which Microsoft is referring to as app mirroring and shows up in Windows as an app called Your Phone, seems to be work best with Android for now. Although Microsoft did announce the ability to transfer webpages from an iPhone to a Windows 10 desktop so you can pick up where you left off on mobile.

How is that worse than letting google or apple have access to your phone?

Be careful: Some users are complaining the Windows 10 October 2018 update is deleting their files.

Addendum (article from may, but it's about the October update): Using Windows 10’s New Clipboard: History and Cloud Sync.

Clipboard history + syncing, what could go wrong?

Shows symptoms of a corrupted local profile. If that works like it did in previous versions of windows, it doesn't actually delete anything, as the profile and the data still exists. It just creates a blank profile that it shoves you into making it look like you've lost everything. The files are still available on the hard drive if you know where to look.
