I own two seagates. One for the last three years and one for about two years. Neither has given any indication of failing but that's they way they play!

I got seagate because they were most cost effective. which is Latin for cheap.

Some points worth noting:
Backblaze wrote:The Seagate Barracuda Green 1.5TB drive, though, has not been doing well. We got them from Seagate as warranty replacements for the older drives, and these new drives are dropping like flies. Their average age shows 0.8 years, but since these are warranty replacements, we believe that they are refurbished drives that were returned by other customers and erased, so they already had some usage when we got them.
Backblaze wrote:A year and a half ago, Western Digital acquired the Hitachi disk drive business. Will Hitachi drives continue their excellent performance? Will Western Digital bring some of the Hitachi reliability into their consumer-grade drives?

Correction: Hitachi’s 2.5″ hard drive business went to Western Digital, while the 3.5″ hard drive business went to Toshiba.

I've had a 2 TB Seagate USB3 drive for over a year now. Works a treat so far...

That puts you, from the rough view, in the 95 percentile.

In year two you're in 80%

At year three you're 75% dead, dead, dead, just like your dick.

Well, the majority of them are still OK so maybe you got one of the good ones. Nevertheless, I'll take data over anecdotes. Looks like Hitachi is the way to go.

Any data on laptop drives? (no pun intended)

That assumes some laptop maker would but that crap in their machine.

Toshiba internal here, 2TB Seagate external for backup.

Usually I buy Western Digital. I needed the Seagate and it was cheap.

You get what you pay for I guess.

I always get Western Digital Black, 5 year warranty.

Had one fail in less than a year, but they replaced it.

Toshiba laptop here and you'd assume it has a Toshiba drive, but who knows without crackin' it open. It's a 1TB and it will soon be full, so I'm looking for at least 2TB or more (as they become available) to clone and replace...................

After thinking 'bout this for about a week now, I can see a pending hit on my wallet.

This [non]issue led me to researching other network attached storage. I gotta tell ya, I didn't even known what network attached storage really was until I discovered this [non]problem.

4-zamples, I didn't know (realize really) that NAS devices were in fact full-fledged computers. It so happens that my [kinda]NAS (Seagate Media Central) just happens the very bottom rung of that class because it is the cheapest thing on the market because that's what they had a Worst Buy. Worst Buy doesn't deal in higher end networking stuff, or at least not their B&M stores. I come to find there are whole worlds of NAS devices to choose from, and all of them complicated and expensive.

So, what I got is this
Spoiler:
Image
So, what I really want is this
Spoiler:
Image
But my wallet can only afford this
Spoiler:
Image
But since I'm a cheap, lazy bastard who never follows through with plans unless there's money in it, I'm going to settle for this
Spoiler:
Image
At least until something breaks.

Bottom line, even with the 2x 3TB raid 1 configuration, it would set me back about $750. For that I could buy 5 Seagate media centrals. Small net builder tells me my seagate system sucks so bad in terms of moving data that the USPS might even be a bit faster. But I haven't found a 'home' situation where demand outpaced supply.

Backblaze has posted some more stats about hard drive failures. Pretty technical stuff but worth the read.

Original short article via Computer World
http://www.computerworld.com/article/28 ... ilure.html

More in-depth article on Backblaze blog
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-smart-stats/
Elaborates on how they anticipate a drive failure. blah, blah, blah

But what I like is their openness about it all. Led me to look into who the fuck they are.

The will back up all your [important] unique data on all your hard drives for $5 a month. It does the back up over the internet transparently on an immediate, idle or scheduled basis (idle by default). No limit to size. If you lose something and want it back, you can download it --OR-- they will send you a fucking hard drive. I'm sure that costs extra but whatever.

$5 a month is a good deal. That works out to $60 a year.

OT-one-H, I have 6 drives in the home. If I were to buy enough drive capacity to back all that up (and some of it is dedicated to back up anyway) and plug in my own hard drive failure rates, my gut tells me the cost is a wash.

OT-other-H, keeping it all in the home puts all my eggs are then in one basket.

OT-gripping-H, the risk is pretty small compared to my principled position of keeping my data close to my chest. I'm really not that principled though, and all my data is pretty mundane and they do offer private key encryption.

I may do this. No longer need that freezer.

Oh, interesting pic of a backblaze pod

An update to this: the one I've had for two years failed big time last night. I got a "Server not found" error on my tv and thought my desktop server was down. Nope, the seagate central was off. I tried rebooted it and it wouldn't turn on. Nothing. Nada. Zero. D.E.A.D. So fuck. I check my records and I'm still in warranty by a month. I got an RMA and just shipped it back to them. I should get the replacement in about 2 weeks.

I lost about 50GB in data that wasn't backed up elsewhere. No biggy, I can re-rip that stuff from DVD but it is a pain.

Meanwhile, I'm looking for something more reliable to subsidize my misery. substantial. I'm thinking of going with Qnap or Synology but fuck they are expensive. Maybe a 4TB western digital my cloud mirror (2TB raid 1).

Make me decide.

Enter "goats" "male" "underage" and "butt-plug" in your search engine.

Just scroll past all of the pictures of His Mom.

Fuck.

I just tried to use my Seagate drive and no can do with USB3 ports.

Works fine with USB2 tho' so not sure if it's a mobo problem, the first effort failed.

Time for Doc to send me an apple. :(
