Firefox 57

Post by Rob Lister » Thu Nov 16, 2017 12:31 pm

Firefox updated itself to 57. This broke several of my extensions.
Rehost Image is one I use frequently so I went to its site hoping for a new version and ...
Update: Rehost Image will not be supported in Firefox 57, which will be released in November. I have no plans to update it. If you'd like to take over the project and migrate it to a WebExtension I'd be happy to hand it over.My sincere apologies to the two people who donated $2 to help keep the extension going.
Okay, that's funny.

Summarizes FF's approach to their newest blaotware. Rather than fix its notorious problems with memory usage, they decided to fuck over the only reason people use it: the extensions. Even NoScript was not ready for this.

There are ways to force FF to accept extensions it does not want to a point. The architecture is so different--and they have refused to help developers with migration--they have become Macintosh circa 1987.

Well, that's their fault.

Mozilla reports on how fast they are after years of claiming how fast they are despite all evidences--thanks--to the contrary.

It is like he does not even try to be funny anymore.

I stopped updating Firefox at version 20. It's my favorite collector's item.

However I also have whichever version is the most recent one that is bundled with Tor.

Chrome for doing business.

Firefox 57 on Linux is lightyears better. I had switched to Chrome because ff had just about died out: it kept getting slower and slower and buggier and buggier. The whole extensions thing sucks, but at least it's usable. And muuuuuch faster.

57 seems to have a squarer look - especially on the tabs which will look a bit peculiar till I get used to them. But it does run noticeably faster.

OK then. What's the latest best recommendation if FF sucks ass so much? And it is way slow, but that could just be the tin cans and string I use to connect to the interwebz. Still prefer something that can fuck all the annoying ads if possible.

I'm happy with (portable) FF clones: https://www.palemoon.org/ & Cyberfox.
Have a try. :)

I am sorry, did the Great Unwashed say something?

MOAR seriously, the problem is what makes Image so useful: the Extensions or "Addons." They tend to slow things down. Mozilla/Firefox will often tell you to get rid of them if you complain about the slows, but that is why you use it over Safari--if you are Image--or Chrome or even Image Internet Explorer if you are

Now, to be fair to Mozilla/Firefox, if you load up your browser with bloatware addons with the same functions or even competing functions, well . . . that is your problem. However, there are a number of very useful security and anti-bloat addons that are no longer compatible.

So

and wait a few weeks/months for addons to update to the new architecture. What is funny is FF will claim to send you to "alternatives" which, invariably, is just the main page of addons with a "and the horse Your Mom blew on the way in."

One can also--on an Image though I am POOR! For . . . I . . . AM . . . a [Get on with it!--Ed.]--simply update, try it, trash the application and replace it with the old one. The profiles stay the same.

In the . . .

I don't think FF has ever sucked ass. It has been my preferred browser for more than a decade. DocX is clearly a hater but I don't see much substance in his bile.

Having used FF57 for a few days now I can tell you it is notably--significantly faster. It hasn't crashed on me but neither did earlier versions except on rare occasions.

Memory usage is purportedly much less; now lesser than chrome, ie, Safari, etc, but I don't really give a shit about that so long as it doesn't max out and start paging to the hard drive. It has never been [that] bad in the past so an improvement on something that wasn't a problem is moot to me.

The default skin on new version sucked but that took three clicks to fix.

The new webextensions mandate should give developers greater opportunities to do cool and needed stuff but I don't really grok so that's a Pyrrho question maybe.

The addons it broke for me were
noscript (which should be ready today if promises weigh more than spit)
Rehost image (which won't be back from that author; somebody will fill the niche)
Dictionary lookup (which I'm sure a sub exists but I haven't been bothered to look)

All else works great.

I loved my mac, but Safari was never better than mediocre. If it wasn't bundled with OS X and didn't have Apple's brand, it would have disappeared in obscurity.

The same could be said for the mac in general. OS X is really the only virtue of it. But it is quite the virtue.

Safari sucks ass like opera. Not horrible, but barely passable.

I think Apple's hardware side shouldn't be discounted too easily, although it is overly expensive. Portability is something Apple excelled at, and they led the market in that regard.
