Good call on Steely Dan CH.

A world become one
of salads and sun
Only a fool would say that
You can lead them to knowledge, but you can't make them think.

Hootie and the Blowfish - Not Even the Trees

I'm a stranger in my home
Sing it Hootie.
You see I'm tired of feeling this pain
I'm tired of living my own little lie
You know it, Mr. Blowfish.
I lay down with memories of you keep that keep me going on, going on
Bring on home now.
Right now I just can't see
'Cause i'm feeling weak
And my sould begins to bleed
And no one is listening to me, not even the trees
Fucking trees.
Such potential!

No. That's tied for first place with The Blind Man in the Bleachers as the schmaltziest country music song ever.

But its got all other beat for the LULziness. 8)

Acting upon information received
Rosie had everything planned
Stood in the garden with shotgun in hand
What a woman

Whilst entertaining the headlines next day
Rosie would not be released
If it was found that her man was deceased
Silly woman

Oh but Rosie, a girl with a strange kind of humor
Stupidly took in a rumor
Making her think that she'd lost
Double-crossed by a man who was dear

Stood in the garden and shaking her head
Rosie could not understand
Wiping her eyes with the back of her hand
Sad, sad woman

Oh but Rosie, how could a few words have made her
Certain that he had betrayed her
Making her think that she'd lost
Double-crossed by a man who was dear
Very near to her

Row upon row of angel hair
Rosie had everything planned
Sure that the people would not understand
Sad, sad woman
Sunshine and Flies

Seven Spanish Angels by Willie Nelson and Ray Charles

He looked down into her blue eyes, and said
"Say a prayer for me". She
Threw her arms around him, whispered
"God will keep us free".
They could hear the riders comin', He said
"This is my last fight...If they
Take me back to Texas, they won't
Take me back a-live.

There were seven Spanish angels, at the
Altar of the sun.
They were prayin' for the lovers, in the
Valley of the gun.
When the battle stopped and the smoke cleared,
There was thunder from the throne,
And seven spanish angels, took a-nother
Angel home.

She reached down and picked the gun up,
That lay smokin in his hand.
She said, "Father please forgive me;
I can't make it without my man."
And she knew the gun was empty,
And she knew she couldn't win,
But her final prayer was answered
When the rifles fired again.

There were seven Spanish angels, at the
Altar of the sun.
They were prayin' for the lovers, in the
Valley of the gun.
When the battle stopped and the smoke cleared,
There was thunder from the throne,
And seven spanish angels, took a-nother
Angel home.

Shit happens. The older you get, the more often shit happens. So you have to try not to give a shit even when you do. Because, if you give too many shits, you've created your own shit creek and there's no way out other than swimming through the shit. Oh, and fuck.

The B side to that single was "Put the Bone In." I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP ( I used to own the 45 as a kid, and yes, "Seasons" is a terribly depressing song).

Put the bone in
She yelled at the store
'Cause my doggie's been hit by a car
And I do want to bring him home something
Put the bone in
She yelled out once more
Because the meat from the pork is so sweet
And the bone from the pork give to me
Put the bone in she begged him
As she paced across the floor
Put the bone in she yelled out once more

Put the bone in
She yelled at the store
Cause my doggie's been hit by a car
And I do want to bring him home something
Put the bone in
She yelled out once more ...

What about songs that depress you not for the lyrics, but because some no-talent pop star made a fortune off it?

I love Erik Satie. Used to love playing his pieces as a young piano student. Weird, but beautiful.

There's a variation in the style of a Gymnopaedie on my current CD.
Who else in 1923 could publish "Three pieces in the form of a pear", or a work called "Dehydrated Embryos"? He totally went forward in time and ripped off Alice Cooper...

Hey, we never announced a winner.

Could open it up to new contenders while we're at it.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

Haven't heard any song more depressing since I wrote that.

Truly the national anthem of endless despair.

And Anthony's Song by Billy Joel is still the LULziest nominally depressing song.

An oddball contender from a "filk" singer, but it does get to me at least:

Cecilia Eng: "Absent Hosts"

Third planet, yellow star
Tell us where your children are
We have come here from afar
To answer their invitation

Long your message kept its pace
Drifting on through endless space
Seeking for another race
'Til at last it found us

Far your children's plea was cast
Since its launch, much time has passed
Here its trail led us at last
Tell us where to find them

Can we find them far away?
Did some leave before the day
That death came to this place to stay?
Tell us where to find them

Dead planet, yellow star
Was it just another war?
Did your children die before
We found their invitation?

From dust we come, to dust retire
Life too soon will oft expire
Poison winds and deadly fire
Are all they've left to greet us

Third planet, yellow star
Tell us where your children are
We have come here from afar
To answer their invitation
