Opera clips.

Postby bindeweede » Tue Apr 29, 2014 11:42 pm

As a newbie, am I allowed? I can't find any opera threads, so I thought I'd start one. Not that I am a fantastic fan - I just like a good tune and a bit of sentimentality. (It's not against the law, afaik.)

Several years ago I came across this duet from Korngold's "Die Tote Stadt". It was very well-known in the 1920s, but faded. It is one of those tunes that have stayed with me since I heard it. There are two decent versions that I've found on YT, and this, to me, is the better, though I'm not mad on the tenor's voice. (Don't bother too much with the plot - he strangles her in the end.)

The pics are of Salzburg, but the opera is set in Bruges.

Our local theater has showings of operas televised from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. I went and saw one about a month or so ago. It was a showing of Prince Igor and I enjoyed it.

The thing is, though, that I don't speak Russian and if I ignored the subtitles, it was even MORE entertaining, because rather than the story of a Russian Prince overcoming defeat and betrayal, it became the story of Russian William Riker leaving Winterfell to go off to war with his sidekick, Young Benny Hill, leaving the kingdom in charge of his stern matronly girlfriend and John Lovitz. They wake up in a field of poppies where they meet the girl from My Big Fat Greek Wedding who promptly lures Young Benny Hill away. Russian William Riker encounters his stern matronly girlfriend again and they sing a duet only to be interrupted by Lex Luthor who is cosplaying as Colonel Mustard from Clue. They get into an argument and Luthor, evil villian that he is, decides to make Riker go crazy by making him have to deal with dancing hippies for a whole half hour or so. Meanwhile John Lovitz decides that HE should be Lord of Winterfell and stages a coup. Sadly, we all know what happens to thing when you put John Lovitz in charge of things so something blows up and Winterfell collapses killing John Lovitz. Then Riker comes back and realizes that he fucked up leaving an SNL cast member in charge of Winterfell so he tries to hide, only some peasants find him and force him to cooperate in rebuilding. The end.

Seriously, though, I did enjoy it and will probably go see another one soon

There was fairly recently a New York performance of a gayed up Swan Lake.

Not cross dressers. Not camp. Gay.

That is, the swans were played by masculine men.

Unlike gayed up interpretations of various other works (such as Threepenny Opera), it makes more psychological sense than the usual way it's performed. I mean why does the prince not want to marry the beautiful princess really.

Considering it's Tchaikovsky, it's not such a big stretch.

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Leck mich im Arsch (literally "Lick me in the arse") is a canon in B-flat major composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, K. 231 (K. 382c), with lyrics in German. It was one of a set of at least six canons probably written in Vienna in 1782. Sung by six voices as a three-part round, it is thought to be a party piece for his friends.

Julia Lezhneva sings one of the favorite arias of the castrato Carlo Broschi called Farinelli (1705-1782): "Son qual nave ch' agitata". It is the aria of Arsace from act III / scene 1 and was composed by Farinelli's brother Riccardo Broschi (c 1698-1756). Farinelli sung this center showpiece, inserted in the pasticcio ARTASERSE with music by Hasse, Attilio Ariosti, Nicola Porpora and Riccardo Broschi, given 29th october 1734 in the theatre at the Haymarket marking his debut in London.

Strange, "goaty" version by Nella Anfuso here (where I got the details): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljoZxB95LD4

Jesus. I can't believe I clicked on this incredibly faggy thread.
