There are other intrusions non-TOC Trek. Such as the holodeck stuff in that earlier episode.

But notionally continuing TOC for the 1970 season does not invalidate the canonicity of "future" Trek. Somehow it's all the same notional universe with Captain Picard and Klingon black good guys guys still to come.

One thing that makes this continuation so good is the mimicry of the original cast, effects, sets, etc. Even the irritating inconsistencies are the same, and that's no problem at this point in real universe time. :BigGrin3:

But the other part of the perfection is that it doesn't try to be an exact clone, any more that season 2 TOC was an exact clone of season 1.

And another:

The big issue is sex discrimination:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMasSzFXaKQ

It is very plausible as 4th season Star Trek, and after all 1970 was the age of wimminz lib was it not?

Might be subtle anti Hillary propaganda, but absolutely done in a way that does not break protocol with having notionally been aired in 1970. :coolspecs:

Finished.

A "racial prejudice" twist even cuter than the Frank Gorshin one.

Happy ending, unlike the Frank Gorshin one.

Preachy as hell, but like 1970 not 2017. So it's all good. :)

Kirk got all the "happy endings" in Star Trek.
The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

The irony is that hack basically wrote Sulu porn.

Interestingly, VAM was my introduction to the Trek EU, with the above book and the novelizations of the middle films. It became so much a part of my knowledge of Trek that for a long time I barely realized how many key ideas weren't actually in the films. (Saavik being half-Romulan, for example).

Sulu was definitely a favored character in her writing but I didn't find his introduced love interest (Mandala Flynn) too much of an intrusion. It was never solid, and the character didn't get in the way or take over the story. Nor was the prose too awkward, in fact it was downright mild compared to some of the borderline K/S stuff I found in the earlier Bantam series.

Whether she is a hack I will recuse myself from, because what was first discovered can have an undeserved shine to it, perhaps.

One thing I'd love to settle--she introduced the idea of Sulu captaining the Excelsior in the novelization of STII. Is that an original choice of hers that graduated to canon, or did she have knowledge of the screenwriters' plans for STIII?

I do not know, I found her unreadable. I ultimately hate-completed that book. Why she ever got the gig to do the other novelizations is anyone's guess. This was not just my opinion; I knew other "Trekies" who had a low of an opinion as I had: "fucking unreadable."

I do know that George Takei wanted the role of captain in the last movie despite the fact he would have far less screen time. Granted, he was in the nadir of his opinion of SHAT . . . ner at that point.

Now tell me what you think of Diane Duane...

I don't know how much Trek Novelverse reading you've done, but if you've read enough to have a favorite author, who do you pick?

Probably Peter David for me, with runners up David Gerrold, Greg Cox, the Reeves-Stevenseses, and possibly AC Crispin.

Not that much. The genre--"Trek Fan Fiction"--was ruin'd for me by Vonda. Being a Wee Spud, I naïvely believed some sort of "quality control" must exist to prevent just any fool from writing and publishing drek. I also noted that drek became quasi-canonical--like "Vulcan's cannot lie!"--despite James Blish debunking it years before. This, along with The Lost Generation and Deep Six then Vagina forced me to conclude "hey, why not try something new rather than vomiting out more pre-digested drek we know the 'Trekies' will swallow without question?"

I also discovered porn.

I think the "Quality Control" was John Ordover making sure the appropriate palms were greased, maybe?

Funny enough, their legit fan fiction contest winners, published in various "Strange New Worlds" anthologies, is sometimes better writing than the officially licensed stuff :P

Which brings us sort of back to on topic for the thread? Close enough for me.

That seems to match what we've seen before, at least in pre-Abrams Trek.
He has a biological daughter (which obviously isn't proof, but suggests)
The few times he wasn't shown completely asexual, he went for Uhura.
But then, so did the ladies on the ship.

The REAL first interracial kiss:
