The new Playboy

Postby Anaxagoras » Tue Oct 13, 2015 11:54 am

No more nudes! Yes, really.
They are moving in a new direction. I guess their old model was kind of obsolete anyway. Too vanilla. But still too sexy to casually read in public, for example. But I still fondly remember the day when I found my dad's stash of Playboy magazines and discovered the joys of naked ladies.

The new version will still have "playmates" but the poses will be strictly PG-13.

When it comes to pr0n, "vanilla" or otherwise, nothing can compete with the internet. :)

What's the market for that?

Or is the "playmate" merely part of the branding like the rabbit?

Next up: Sweet gals in burkhas. Go for the new European market.

I guess they're going to find out. Probably a desperate move, but they may be in "do something, anything" mode.

Incidentally, a few years ago I noticed they started becoming something of a clothing brand here in Japan. Mostly I see the Playboy bunny on socks worn by schoolgirls.

There's the answer to my question.

The target demographic for the new Playboy.

The relatively modest centerfold will be just above 18 modeling Playboy branded merchandise intended for girls a little bit younger than that. :BigGrin3:

It might be a desperate move but it is a smart one. They'll get into stores they were not allowed in before. They'll get into barber shops. There's no need to show naked women pics anymore. That trail done-been-blazed. And Hustler already cornered the scratch and sniff market.

I agree with Lister. In these days of the internet, if all I want to do is see nekkid ladies, there are far cheaper ways of seeing them and seeing them do far more than just pose wearing nothing but a birthday suit and a smile. So their old business model really didn't have a place in the world any more. It was like being a buggy whip factory. So now they are going to try to focus on trying to on being a serious journalistic magazine and being able to be more widely sold, and having a certain brand name recognition to boot (even for non-nudey pics, Lots of good fiction was first published in Playboy, and interviews). I don't know if it will work, but it doesn't strike me as being so crazy that it's not worth trying.

And besides, their announcement has got people talking about the magazine again. Seriously, when was the last time you or anyone you know really talked or even thought about stodgy old Playboy in this era of internet porn? Bet a lot of people who haven't looked at a Playboy since Bush The Elder was in office will pick one up, just to see the changes. Smart move in the short term if nothing else.

I give it six months and then nudity will creep back in. First just partial, one upping an entertainment magazine or two. Six more months and it will be regularly featured again, though not as much as before.

Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

You know, a LONG time backI saw pics of Pam tat were . . . pre-augmentation, let's say.

She was a really pretty girl back then. Girl next door kind of beautiful.

Then she bacame merely the delivery system for 16 lbs of silicon, and (I think) hurt her looks considerably.

But what of "The Total Good Life"?

Oh, that's right. That has been reserved by the 1%. Sorry. As you were.

Playboy Enterprises Inc. is exploring a sale, a move that comes soon after the storied magazine publisher ditched nude photos and launched a revamp for the digital age.

Investment bank Moelis & Co. is advising Playboy, which Hugh Hefner, the company's founder, took private in 2011 alongside private-equity firm Rizvi Traverse Management. Hefner owns a roughly one-third stake in the company, according to people familiar with the situation.

Playboy doesn't disclose detailed financials. In 2015, the company generated $38 million from media, including the magazine and digital publishing initiatives, and $55 million from licensing its brand to other companies, according to a document reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

Those figures are much bigger than I thought.

Playboy could fetch north of $500 million, and potential buyers could include companies that would license the brand for use in consumer goods, new media outfits and trophy buyers, the people said. The 2011 deal that took Playboy private valued it at $207 million.

That's a bigger number than I believe. I don't think it is more valuable now than in 2011.

Is that profit or gross revenue?

The licensing thing I kind of believe. I think I already mentioned how they are a clothing brand here in Japan.

Has going non-nude helped or hurt their bottom line?

Revenue. I think the Media side is probably operating at a loss. The Branding is all profit, but it dilutes the value with every deal.

I don't know but ...
It’s worth pointing out, though, that they had already done away with nudes online last year and they saw positive results:

In August of last year, its website dispensed with nudity. As a result, Playboy executives said, the average age of its reader dropped from 47 to just over 30, and its web traffic jumped to about 16 million from about four million unique users per month.

So now where are people going to find pictures of nude women aside from the entirety of the internet?
