That's lovely, Witness.

Thirty years ago, I was six years into my banking career and beginning to wish I'd stayed at school to study art and music. :)
Shit happens. The older you get, the more often shit happens. So you have to try not to give a shit even when you do. Because, if you give too many shits, you've created your own shit creek and there's no way out other than swimming through the shit. Oh, and fuck.

Analogous to other painters/engravers of the period, e. g. Félicien Rops or Bruno Schulz (which could make other posts if someone is interested).

Censorship.

Arthive wrote:Still too racy! Advertisements by Egon Schiele censored.

A series of advertisements showing Schiele’s graphically contorted bodies (with explicitly rendered private parts) didn’t make it past the critical eyes of those selling advertising space in Britain and Germany. The artworks had to be covered up.

According to a Vienna Tourist Board spokeswoman, Helena Hartlauer, Transport for London rejected the original images, citing trepidation about depicting genitals in public space.

It’s been nearly a century since the Austrian painter Egon Schiele died, but his art — charged with erotic energy and usually showing more than a little skin — still ruffles feathers.
[…]
In some ways, the no-nude attitudes abroad have been a blessing in disguise for Vienna’s campaign — since early November the Tourist Board has been highlighting images of the public ads with the hashtag #DerKunstihreFreiheit (#ToArtItsFreedom in English) on social media.
Slightly NSFW link.

And failed censorship.

NY Times wrote:Met Defends Suggestive Painting of Girl After Petition Calls for Its Removal

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will not remove a controversial painting by the French painter known as Balthus from public display.

The painting, entitled “Thérèse Dreaming” (1938), depicts a young girl in a suggestive pose that leaves her underwear visible.

An online petition containing over 8,000 signatures on Monday urged the museum to rethink its decision to include the painting in its offerings.

“Given the current climate around sexual assault and allegations that become more public each day, in showcasing this work for the masses, The Met is romanticizing voyeurism and the objectification of children,” it reads.

In reference to the museum’s decision, the Met’s chief communications officer, Ken Weine, said, “Moments such as this provide an opportunity for conversation, and visual art is one of the most significant means we have for reflecting on both the past and the present and encouraging the continuing evolution of existing culture through informed discussion and respect for creative expression.”

What? Of course I'm referring to the cat!
"It is not I who is mad! It is I who is crazy!" -- Ren Hoek

"[... it seems most strange that... ] the Creator of Heaven and Earth resorted to the womb of a certain Jewish lady, grew there for nine months and was born as an infant, and afterwards grew up and was betrayed into the hands of his enemies who sentenced him to death and executed him, and that afterwards... he came to life and returned to his original place. The mind of a Jew, or any other person, simply cannot tolerate these assertions. If you have listened all your life to the priests who have filled your brain and the marrow of your bones with this doctrine, and it has settled into you because of that accustomed habit. [I would argue that if you were hearing these ideas for the first time, now, as a grown adult], you would never have accepted them." -- Rabbi Moses ben Nahman, defending the Talmud at the Disputation of Barcelona, July 1263.

"God is the supreme excuse for human adults to absolve themselves of any obligation to preserve natural resources for their own children during their lifetime." -- Gene Ray

I suppose L'Art Brut is a "school" of art, as it might be Cubism or Dada?

And is the expression "l'art brut" slang for anything?

Not slang expression for something indelicate? Dammit!

"Self taught creators" yet a certain French sameness about it as though it were a "school". :p
