I have been watching The Purge, The Good Place and the new Doctor Who. I am enjoying all three.

The Purge, weirdly, seems to work better as a TV show than as a movie, despite having to be PG-13 at best. The longer format lets them show it from different strata of society. And the lower tolerance for blood and gore means they have to show some other interesting facets of the society depicted. Good show, really.

The Good Place is a show I have been enjoying for a couple of seasons. It deals with the afterlife, though this show takes place mostly on Earth. I like it because each season it seems there is no future way it could go, but they find a unique way to continue it anyway. Can't say too much without spoilers (each season has had a weird cliffhanger), if you haven't seen it, see it.

Doctor Who, just got a new Doctor, a woman this time, so there was a bit of controversy. But it also got a new showrunner and so far I am liking the more cinematic direction the show is taking.

Maybe I'll try watching The Good Place again.

Anyone watch BoJack Horseman? It has its moments.

Rake has lost something. There was a sorta good natured charm about it. This season is "brittle". They worked Trump into it and it seems forced.

A neat bit about The Good Place--in the TV show, you can't swear in "The Good Place". Not that you get punished, it just comes out as something else whenever you try to. So it becomes "Well this is forking stupid.", or "You're full of shirt!". This must have become habit for the characters because it continues when they are elsewhere.

Naturally, on the subreddit for the show, everyone adopts the substitute swear words. I just thought about that today and found it amusing as they haven't had reason to police themselves for language as a result. Other subreddits either allow whatever or have to set up rules and censorbots.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

I never noticed that but you're right. I think I just got so used to all the "forking shirt" coming out of the characters mouths it began to seem like their natural speech.

House on Haunted Hill?

Some creepy stuff in ep 1. Anyone else stick with it?

Watching Designated Survivor with Jack Bauer. S2 turned saccharine, no real bite.

What is the deal with the Kevin Spacey series ... House of cards? Did they edit him out?

You mean "Haunting of Hill House"? I quit after episode 3 because it was 99% family drama and 1% ghosts. Bored me to tears. TBH I didn't care for the book either and it's considered a classic.

Yeah, I can see that coming.

The Haunting was a terriffic movie IMHO. Reread the book recently. I like it. There are dman few, if any, decent ghost stories or movies as far as I can see.

One short story is by Gerard Manly Hopkins called ... dammit gotta google
No, Manly Wade Welman ... Where Angels Fear
It's in this book:
https://www.amazon.com/Hauntings-Tales- ... ernatural
Also in the movie the haunting ... a very unsettling scene

Yeah, that is a member of a very short list.

I would really like to make a ghost story that scares the shit out of people, that is something that I aspire to.

I recall when Ghost Story by Peter Straub came out. I was so disappointed I screamed for a month then I accosted strangers on the street

I went into a house once ages ago. Thing was for sale and vacant and we thought that it might be fun to have a vaca house on long island, NY.

Anyway, I went in and felt something bad. No magic, no ghosts. I just had a very bad feeling and had to get out.

Never happened before or since. Damn odd. And memorable.

I would never want to buy a haunted house, especially a notorious one. Not because I believe in ghosts, I don’t, but because I wouldn’t want my house being some weird tourist attraction. I wouldn’t want people standing on my lawn to get a selfie with the ghost house

I think it's a bit more than that, but it does get more scary as it goes I believe. Around episode 5 we finally get to find out who The Bent Neck Lady is. It's a good episode, IMO.

I had a similar problem with Black Lightning. 99% family drama, 1% superhero action (and even that 1% of action was pretty lame if you compare with movies like The Avengers these days). It's just corny. Corny villians with corny motivations and corny heros with equally corny motivations and writing if you ask me.

I think that's why I gave up on Black Lightning after a handful of episodes too.

It's definitely family drama but the reason there is drama has to do with ghost and haunting.

I'm enjoying it myself (unlike Black Lightning). I never read the book, so I'm not comparing it with the book.
To me, it is pretty scary. There are scary scenes to come in later episodes, but I don't want to spoil them for anyone.

ETA: I will say, since it's not really a spoiler, that James Randi gets mentioned in one of the episodes.
