Netflix Co-Founder’s Crazy Plan: Pay $10 a Month, Go to the Movies All You Want

As movie theaters struggle with tepid sales, Mitch Lowe has an extreme proposal for how to get more people into seats: Let them come to all the showings they want for about the price of a single ticket each month.

Lowe, an early Netflix Inc. executive who now runs a startup called MoviePass, plans to drop the price of the company’s movie ticket subscriptions on Tuesday to $9.95. The fee will let customers get in to one showing every day at any theater in the U.S. that accepts debit cards. MoviePass will pay theaters the full price of each ticket used by subscribers, excluding 3D or Imax screens.

Interesting idea. Probably well worth it. I still won't buy popcorn @ $3 an ounce.

People still go to movie theaters? That sounds like a great idea and all, but ironic coming when netflix makes it ever more appealing to watch movies at home.
It's "pea-can", man.

Movie theatres are stepping up their game. Many of the ones around here are instituting comfortable recliners and reserved seating. That has improved my experience tremendously.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

People hate being around other people.

Going to theaters made sense when that was the only way to see movies.

When TV came alone, between popcorn and the fact that movies weren't quite as censored as TV saved the theaters for a while.

Sure I'm nostalgic for great big theaters (especially Cinerama), but when the current technology allows for watching movies whenever you want without other fucking people around ... :)

I love going to the movies. As Gnome said, they seem to be trying to make the experience less annoying and, for me at least, there is something to be said for just going out to do something. Going out, having a nice meal, going to see a movie and making a night of it is just more fun than eating mac & cheese with a can of soda in my hand, scrolling through Netflix for something to watch. For me at least

If I didn't have movies, I would be a total recluse. I literally would never leave my apartment except for work and to buy food

The whole problem with Netflix is paying for movies.

That's something else that's obsolete. :p

Nah, most people are ok paying for convenience. Furthermore, pirating movies is not so simple and this days will likely get you a DMCA notice/warning in the mail with a threat to eventually shut down your internet. Of course one can take precautions but it's not something average person knows how to do.

Pirating? Never!

All the good stuff is public domain (plus some guys give it away for free).

Yep.

Frankly torrenting movies is a pain in the ass and I would rather spend the money than deal with that PLUS run the risk of having my ISP on my ass, getting a copy of Butt Busters IX that someone labelled Guardians of The Galaxy 2, etc

Not everyone is going to be content to watch nothing but either movies that are so old they have become public domain or so bad that their respective production companies never bothered to do the paperwork to keep it out.

There are some good public domain movies, Night of the Living Dead and It's a Wonderful Life, for instance. But not nearly so many that they will ever pose a threat to the idea of paying for movies. Very few people are opposed to paying for something they enjoy.
