Yoo-hoo! Doctor X!

Post by Anaxagoras » Thu Sep 29, 2011 3:38 pm

Talk about a dramatic ending to the season.

http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=310928101
Papelbon (4-1) struck out the first two batters before giving up a double to Chris Davis. Nolan Reimold followed with a double to score pinch-runner Kyle Hudson, and Andino completed the comeback with a single to left that a sliding Carl Crawford couldn't glove.
:bricks:

And, will Derek Jeter add another World Series ring to his collection? :D

It is not Papelbon's fault there was no starting pitching for half the season. That catch was also not Crawford's fault either.

It is the Year of the Tiger.

The catch wasn't Crawford's fault, but he was no help during their atrocious September slide. Losing Dice-K and Buchholz hurt. Lackey sucked for most of the season. Letting washed-up Wakefield lose game after game in an effort to get his 200th win was painful to watch. Beckett and Lester had no excuse for playing badly down the stretch. The bullpen blew a lot of games, but they were overworked the last few weeks.

I think Adrian Gonzales deserves some blame. Sure he got a lot of hits, but since the all-star break, few of them were when they were needed. And his post game comment "I guess God didn't want us in the playoffs" was just stupid.

Ellsbury, Pedroia & Scutaro were the only batters who looked like they wanted to be in the playoffs.

Well, to be fair, Youkilis did as well, but he was at home chewing through a bedpost.

My fear before the season was they did not have enough pitching--what with Beckett coming off a "bad year" and Lackey sucking. That left two decent pitchers. Save one or two games here and there, Diesucky has sucked. Oddly enough, this season he threw the WORSE and the BEST game "evah!" Anyways, when Lester-Buch-Beckett pitched well, they were dominant. If they stumbled . . . good bye. People tout offense, defense and all of that, but you need both.

Two decent--and Lester and Beckett were "decent"--pitchers are not enough.

Though I will say, this ESPN Documentary on the 2003 Cubs and Steve Bartman makes me feel much better. Seriously.

Man!

Bill Buckner feels sorry for Steve Bartman and Cubs fans.

Funny, I remember watching the game wondering if it would be an RS-Cubs series . . . then Bartman and Grady "Pitch Count? What Pitch Count?!" Little. Very interesting documentary.

Surprisingly, they do not know still.

I think letting him go will be a major mistake. They will replace him with . . . whom?
