Video of flagrant foul no-calls at basketball game goes viral
Connell (Wash.) High's Cole Vanderbilt was a relative unknown in the basketball world, but all that changed two days ago, when a viral YouTube video turned him into one of the most hated players in Washington.
...
Even though you could probably make a case that most of the fouls, while aggressive in nature, weren't of the flagrant variety, there's no doubting the fifth foul (about 2:54) is definitely the kind of bushleague garbage that should get you kicked out of a game.

So if you were a coach, would you want to draft him??

First of all that kid can't play. He's there because he's big.

Second, the article correctly points out that the problem is primarily with referees. If they called fouls correctly this behavior would not continue.

I blame Bush.

Problem is primarily with the coach, the kid, the kid's parents, and the referees, not necessarily in that order, and possibly simultaneously.

Believe it or not, that is indiccated that in the article.
[Cole Vanderbilt] a tough kid, but those that know him know he's a teddy bear," Connell coach Oscar Garza told the Tri-City Herald. "My 7-year-old son loves him and lights up when he's around.

Feh. One and two are nothing special. Three is somewhat flagrant but it would be hard to see from the ref's spot on the floor that the elbow was aimed at the head.

In the fourth the contact was initiated by the other player and not a big deal besides.

The fifth was probably flagrant, but looked worse than it really was. The offensive player was off balance and was grabbed. So far so good, but the goon then spun him to the ground, which is worth an ejection for dangerous play.

The last was just a good, hard foul to stop an easy basket.

These are all perfectly legal moves in martial arts contests. They're also all flagrant, and the perpetrator isn't even moving towards the ball but rather towards the knocked-over kid's head. They're good for entertaining the bloodthirsty.

I'll go out on a limb and say they'll be more common in the game within the next ten years. Testable hypothesis!
