We call that "noise reduction."

Removes the "pops" and "tape hiss" from your mp3s.

If they're crunching the numbers, something will get lost.
If lossless compression algorithms are used (which FLAC uses), then by definition no data is lost. This mathematically provable.

If that were not true, then computer programs that are stored in zip files would never work after being unzipped.

See for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lossless_compression

Good point! And I agree.

Yet, I remain a wav file snob.

"Lossless compression" is a contradiction in terms in my tiny Earth mind. Obviously works great in the zip file scenario you cited. Sure it works just fine for audio too.

But don't fuck with my music damnit! :)

You will lose something. Will it be significant? No. But you will lose something. I won't have that.

Some people "get" mathematics, and some people don't. Nothing you can do about that, it's in your DNA.

Edited to add: Perhaps here's another way to look at it. Lossless compression finds and removes redundancies in the data stream. Which is why perfectly random data is not compressible using lossless algorithms.

sparks just doesn't believe that digital is digital… :)

Looka here:
7 7 7 7 7 7 3 3 → 6 7 2 3
Down from 8 digits to 4.
And it's lossless:
6 7 → 7 7 7 7 7 7
2 3 → 3 3
(That's RLE, run length encoding, OK for simple graphics.)

Alternatively, compress one of your WAV files to, e. g., APE format (or FLAC), uncompress the APE back to WAV, then run a binary file comparison tool on original/result.

Even Win media player can directly play an APE file. Example here: http://helpguide.sony.net/high-res/sample1/v1/en/ (horrible pop  ).

I'm selling an ultrathick cable so that when you connect to your speakers it doesn't have to shrink the 1s and 0s. Also we avoid proportional fonts for a consistent cadence. Courier Elite only, so that the 1s and 0s have the serifs the artist intended.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

How can it possibly distinguish between the positive and negative 1s?

There are 10 kinds of people, those who understand binary and those who don't.

I assume you understand binary and thus know there are no negative 1s, and thus I assume you were making a clever joke in response to gnome's clever joke. :)

We received a giant flat screen several years ago as a gift, some monster super HD TV thing that has wireless internet and Netflix and everything else included and the speakers in it are too fucking loud, with way too much bass. Figuring out how to change the audio settings was an exercise in the modern horror of learning some new interface and doing it all with a goddamn remote that controls everything and if I had to also figure out a seperate sound system for it I would have thrown the entire 65 inches of shit in the trash.

Get a better TV, and suffer the slings and arrows of surround sound that rattles your teeth while you desperately try to figure out how to turn it down.

Even better, just stop watching TV
You never know what's going to happen

Bzzzt! That's not binary.

Binary is base 2. What you cited is not base 2, it's base -2. Similar but not the same thing.

Furthermore, there are no negative ones in negabinary either. It too has only zeros and ones.

And thus my original comment stands unrefuted.

Since you already know all that (given your extensive education in mathematics), I assume you were hoping maybe to pull a fast one.

I'm not always fast, but neither am I slow. I'm usually half-fast.
