Yup. They're making a movie based on the board game: Battleship.
I like this comment:
| Quote: | | 1.This is, without a doubt, the most idiotic hollywood trend EVER. what’s next? a horror movie version of “Hungry Hungry Hippos”? A stirring family drama “The Game of Life”? ugh. i think i just made myself throw up in my own mouth. |
And it will star Rihanna, who I guess is a singer or something. Also features Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard and Tom Arnold.
I'm thinking I'll pass on this one. |

I suppose it could be worse.
It could be a game based on Connect-4.
Though that would be pretty sneaky. . . .

| Actually, a horror version of "Hungry Hungry Hippos" sounds really interesting. |

Not only was it a play, but several movies have been based on Othello.
Something to do with some black guy dating a white chick. |

| Quote: | | The film Battleship, based on the old Milton Bradley board game, will feature the whole planet fighting against alien invaders, and the story will be told from both perspectives. |
Man, I loved playing the alien side when I was a kid. Their sea cruisers had an extra... wait... ALIENS How in the Zarking Fardwarks is that based on the board game?
I think the director is channeling Uwe Boll... |

Operation: The Movie. It would be all the better if it featured all the characters from House...
Wilson: "But a herniated uvula wouldn't explain the explosive diarrhea. What about Lupus?"
House: "It's not Lupus. I've got it, he has an infected funny bone complicated by a wrenched kneee. We'll have to go in and take them both out."
Wilson: "That's an incredibly dangerous and experimental procedure.."
House: "As long as we don't touch the sides, we'll be fine." |

On the other hand, that particular movie trailer formula is about a decade or two out of date. When was the last time you saw a new movie advertsised with that particular type of trailer and it wasn't meant as a parody.
Hollywood IS very formulaic, but they are also smart enough to change their formulas every so often. |

Ah, well I don't see nearly as many movies these days as I did in my teens and twenties. And most of those I do see are on DVD so I fast forward past most of the trailers. So I don't know what the new formula is yet. I'll probably realize a few years after all the cool kids already know. |

The forula these days seems to be to splice together a little mini-movie out of bits of the main movie. Maybe with some narration, but that seems increasingly rare these days.
Except for dramas, and especially Oscar-bait dramas, for which this is pretty damned accurate. |

Axis & Allies (War movie)
North Korea, Iran, and Iraq team up to destroy America and take over the world. Only the US, Great Britain, and Poland stand in their way.
Our heroes fight to conquer Baghdad before running out of men at the battle in Warsaw. |

That would actually be an awesome pardoy movie.
Only avid RISK players would get it.
Movie starts off with 6 people fighting desperately to control Australia, burning through all their armies. When the dust settles, and it is clear who will control Australia for the next several years, two of those people immediately quite and go out drinking. The remaining three band together to wipe out the dick who won Australia. After that, the weaker of the three, most likely sitting on Africa, gets double-teamed.
The final battle is fought on Iceland. |
