A short story in Galaxy Magazine by Frank Herbert. Yes that one.

Illustrated by (I think) Wallace Wood.

Early 1960s.

All about how hard it was to recruit female astronauts because the space suits weren't sexy enough (and how the problem was solved).

This would have been way too sexist for Galaxy even a few years later when I actually read the old magazine.

I haven't thought of it in years.

Then I saw this:

One giant leap for space fashion: MIT team designs sleek, skintight spacesuit
(MIT press release)

Quote:
In the 40 years that humans have been traveling into space, the suits they wear have changed very little. The bulky, gas-pressurized outfits give astronauts a bubble of protection, but their significant mass and the pressure itself severely limit mobility.

Dava Newman, a professor of aeronautics and astronautics and engineering systems at MIT, wants to change that.

Newman is working on a sleek, advanced suit designed to allow superior mobility when humans eventually reach Mars or return to the moon. Her spandex and nylon BioSuit is not your grandfather's spacesuit--think more Spiderman, less John Glenn.

...

Well that's just the inventor modeling the thing, not a sweet young astronette. Razz Very Happy

I'd have to see what the inventor looked like out of the spacesuit to really decide...

Click the link and then go to the photo gallery.

Really my only point was that "support" is not an issue for ladies foundation garments in microgravity environments.

I'd tell you to read the Frank Herbert story, but I have no idea where it might be found these days.

Nothing wrong with the inventor that I can tell. Not convinced the suit does 'er justice, though. But improved mobility could be a very good thing.

After much agonised discussion, the S.C. censors have decided that this spacesuit is officially gay and is therefore fit for viewing by everyone except De_Bunk.

Not the same as the real thing, though.

Yes, honey, that suit does make your butt look big.

In space, no one can hear my last breath after she's done PMSing all over my body.
