You mean..."New Labourites".

As much as I detest the socialist hypocrites in Labour - I bemoan that there is no effective opposition in the UKP. And to have free, fair government, opposition is imperative. Where is a Bulldog like Dennis "Kinnock Shredder" Skinner when you need him.

Yeah. They voted him out.

I just checked the Grauniad's front page:

"LABOUR HOLDS INSIGNIFICANT COUNTRY NEXT TO ENGLAND (Not France, Calm down ed.)
"Labour’s victories show importance of localism and positive vision"
LABOUR HOLD LIVERPOOL

Nothing, absolutely nothing about the Tories hosing their carcass off the driveway.

There is this though:

Covid restricted Keir Starmer from setting out vision for UK, says Labour

Of course. I guess that same COVID somehow assisted the constituent Tories then, dipshit. But yeah, COVID. not our fault.

Yeah, countries/democracies need viable opposition parties.

What I’ve taken from the labour and guardian commentary is that there is no way to square the circle and connect the disparate strands of their membership.

Which is a tragedy. Because labour, for all its faults, has made significant contributions to the UK (whether by action in government, or simply by being seen as a possible alternative government and thereby discouraging excesses).

Scottish nationalists vow independence vote after election win

Pro-independence parties won a majority in Scotland’s parliament on Saturday, paving the way to a high-stakes political, legal and constitutional battle with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson over the future of the United Kingdom.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the result meant she would push ahead with plans for a second independence referendum once the COVID-19 pandemic was over, adding that it would be absurd and outrageous if Johnson were to try to ignore the democratic will of the people.

"There is simply no democratic justification whatsoever for Boris Johnson, or indeed for anyone else, seeking to block the right of the people of Scotland to choose our own future," Sturgeon said.

"It is the will of the country," she added after her Scottish National Party (SNP) was returned for a fourth consecutive term in office.

The British government argues Johnson must give approval for any referendum and he has repeatedly made clear he would refuse. He has said it would be irresponsible to hold one now, pointing out that Scots had backed staying in the United Kingdom in a "once in a generation" poll in 2014.

The election outcome is likely to be a bitter clash between the Scottish government in Edinburgh and Johnson's United Kingdom-wide administration in London, with Scotland's 314-year union with England and Wales at stake.

Sir Steamer did sack his Deputy over the poor results.

And he still will not whip Mad Uncle Jeremy! :hyper:

P.S. Expect the SNP to crow about how one more seat, but short of a majority, is a mandate for independence.

Apparently, according to Bugger'd by Colonists, there are members "unhappy" with his leadership and Whatsherface who got sacked has allies who protested enough that she is not "sacked" but "moved" since euphemisms mean everything.

As an observer, the problem with Sir Steamer is that he was suppose to appear younger and more fit than, well, the Mad Uncle, and certainly fitter than Boris. He was suppose to appear more competent and articulate than either of them. He would seem a step-up from the Mad Uncle who, not able to handle Boris, could not even handle the Grey Lady.

The PMQs between those two were unwatchably boring.

So here comes Sir Steamer and . . . and . . . against Boris?

Boris is hardly a Cameron, let alone a Thatcher. He reminds me of What Brown Cannot Do for You – "I Saved the World" – save that he is probably less fit and has worse hair.

Yet Sir Steamer cannot do anything.

He recently started trying to boast how, in court, where he was a celebrated prosecutor "don't you know," Boris would be found guilty of this or that or objected or the guy with the wig would get mad and . . . and . . . the obvious response is, "Mayhaps you should go back to court, because you suck at the dispatch box."

And he has no real competition. The As Fat as Boris leader of the SNP . . . right, enough bandwidth wasted on that disaster.

So Sir Steamer should be Cameron pissing off "Tony," then destroying What Brown Can't Do for You. He should be wiping the walls with Boris, convincing people that he is what "Tony" was when he seemed the young and competent answer to the old dodgy Grey Man – who fucked Edwina Curry . . . he fucked Edwina Curry . . . do you realize he actually fucked Edwina Curry?!!! – and a Tory Party that smelled worse than that rat that died behind the baseboard.

But he is not.

People are wondering why.

Perhaps he has the same benefit as Boris: The Alternative. The Grey Lady was chosen against Boris and various other Swamp Creatures – Grove – and That Guy Who was Chancellor and . . . and . . . who was he again?

She failed.

Spectacularly.

So who is Boris' alternative?

Who is Sir Steamer's? The "likely candidates" who stood or wanted to stand were all failures from the previous Labour failures, some who were beaten up by their opposites every week during relevant questioning.

Or they, like, you know, lost their seat. Labour lost its Balls.

Which is, when you think about it, so much more tragic than having your country led by a Demented Racist Sexual Predator, dancing to the tune of People So Insanely Fascist the extremes of Labour want nothing to do with them, because the alternative was too Batshit Insane.

Wait. . . .

In the Rain.

Just like to point out that the Steamer , Mad Jez and President Tone all went to exclusive fee-paying schools.

On a lighter note, in the London Mayoral election, the UKIP racists got less votes than "Count Binface." As did the Womens Equality Party candidate and the animal rights candidate. Londoners know their priorities.

One is an obviously self-obsessed, narcissistic, half deranged joke candidate disrespecting the UKs democratic system who should in no way be allowed anywhere near a sensible ballot box....and the other is Count Binface.

Prince Michael of Kent’s army role questioned after claims he sold access to Kremlin

Honorary position challenged by Labour after business partner of Queen’s cousin allegedly told reporters he could ‘open the door’ to Putin

Image

Claims that the Queen’s cousin was willing to use his royal status to sell privileged access to Vladimir Putin’s regime have raised questions over whether he should keep his honorary position in the British army, according to Labour.

A recording by undercover reporters posing as investors from South Korea allegedly suggests Prince Michael offered his royal endorsement in exchange for a $200,000 fee during a virtual meeting and was happy to use his home in Kensington Palace as a backdrop for a speech promoting a fake South Korean gold company.

His friend, the Marquess of Reading, later described the prince as “Her Majesty’s unofficial ambassador to Russia” and that he would be prepared to help “open the door” for the fake company through contact with Putin.

Prince Michael has denied the claims, which were made by Channel 4 Dispatches in collaboration with the Sunday Times. Reporters set up a firm called House of Haedong and approached five members of the royal family with an offer of a role.

Michael’s office insisted he had no “special relationship” with Putin and that he had had no contact with the Russian premier or his team since June 2003, when they last met.

Poll shows Irish support unification but don’t want to pay for it
DUBLIN – Citizens of the Republic of Ireland will happily take Northern Ireland off Britain’s hands – but only if they don’t have to pay the bill, a new poll reveals.

After a century of partition, two-thirds of people in the Republic support unification of their island, according to the poll published Saturday in the Irish Independent.

Most expect an island-wide referendum to be held on the issue in the coming decade, as envisaged in the 1998 Good Friday peace deal that followed three decades of bloodshed over Northern Ireland.

To succeed, majorities in both parts of the island would need to support Northern Ireland’s transfer from British to Irish sovereignty.

However, Saturday’s results show 44 percent of people in Northern Ireland want to stay in the U.K., compared to 35 percent who want to leave.

In the south, support for unification is conditioned by who pays. Fifty-four percent of Irish Republic voters would reject unity if it hikes their tax bills, according to the survey, which was conducted by the polling firm Kantar.

Only one in eight would vote for unity if the handover required the Republic to take on Britain’s full costs of subsidizing Northern Ireland.

Economists have projected such costs could range from €6.7 billion to €15.7 billion annually, depending on the extent of fiscal liabilities transferred from London to Dublin under a unification deal.
Seems like support for reunification is still a bit squishy. But it's only a poll, and polls can be wrong.

They'll want to run any referendum the same way the SNP want to: have the vote first, and only if the people vote to leave begin to worry about how to do it, how much it will cost, and who will pay.

A Persian acquaintance of mine lived in London long before most of us HERE had mastered "Potty," as in before That Tuesday in February, 2009.

As he put it, he was still tripping on the LSD as he road in the "Tube" which is a quaint term for "fucking choochoo."

An older gentleman stared at him.

For a while.

Dramatic pause.

He suddenly demanded, "Who won the war?!!"

Said acquaintance gathered what wits he had that were not trying to deflower the various woodland creatures frolicking in the car. He then responded, "the Americans!"

"BLOODY WOG!" the old man screamed.

Technically, the Russians won as they gained the most territorial influence. The UK lost totally as the whole of the Empire went down the toilet.

And now look where they are - back in the mud huts we saved them from and eating roots - what? Or being oppressed by their new colonial masters even more so than when we were kicking the shit out of them and robbing them blind. That actually takes some talent so kudos to them.

It'll happen to the Jocks and the bog-trotters when they get independence too with a bit of luck. Then we can point and laugh and say see? This is what you wanted.

Any chance of a trade agreement while you're online?

Do your patriotic duty:
Brits urged to drink 124 pints each to help struggling pubs get back on their feet

Image
[The pic is for sparks, of course…]

ub-goers will need to drink 124 pints this summer to save the nation’s food and beverage industry, finance experts have claimed.

The industry needs a £25.66 billion boost to return to pre-pandemic levels after a year of forced closures resulted in record losses.

Finance experts Company Debt say drastic drinking would be the best way of saving struggling hospitality businesses and to protect pubs from facing closures as a result of lockdown.

Its website states: "With the latest estimates suggesting that the UK’s food and beverage industry lost at least £25.66bn due to Covid-19 we wondered how much every person in the UK would need to spend in order to reach pre-pandemic levels.

"In particular we wondered how far that money would go in pubs, one of the most beleaguered sectors.

"We came up with a figure of 124 per pints per adult, based on a figure of 52million adults in the UK.’’

Campaigners have produced a “Your Local Pub Needs You” poster, which asks punters to support 40,000 pubs and bars that are fighting to stay afloat.

The poster states: "The average pub will need each customer to spend an additional £382 this year to combat the impact that Covid has had on the sector.

"Thank you for doing your bit!’’

Young Earth Creationist Edwin Poots elected leader of the DUP

Northern Ireland’s agriculture minister wins DUP’s first leadership election

Image
["Wits end?" ]

Northern Ireland’s agriculture minister Edwin Poots has been elected leader of the DUP following the party’s first leadership election.

His victory signals the party making a lurch to the right, as Mr Poots comes from the highly conservative Christian wing of the party and is a young Earth creationist, believing the planet to be just 6,000 years old.

The move followed the resignation of Arlene Foster, who was ousted by her colleagues last month and will step down from her role as First Minister at the end of June.
...
Mr Poots said the DUP has been the “authentic voice of unionism” over the last 50 years, adding: “It will continue to be the authentic voice of unionism under my leadership.”

BLM activist Sasha Johnson in critical condition after gunshot to the head

Shooting in Southwark, London came after numerous death threats, says her Taking the Initiative party

The Black Lives Matter activist Sasha Johnson is in a critical condition after sustaining a gunshot wound to her head in an incident in south London, her affiliated group, Taking the Initiative party, has announced on social media.

In a statement on the group’s Facebook page, the party said that the incident happened in the early hours of Sunday and followed “numerous death threats”.
...
The Metropolitan police later reissued an appeal for witnesses in relation to a 27-year-old woman who is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being shot in the early hours of Sunday.

The Met said the woman was found after officers were called to reports of gunshots in Peckham, south-east London, shortly before 3am.

It is believed the shooting occurred in the vicinity of a house where a party was taking place and a number of people may have been in the area.

A spokesperson said that, while the investigation is at an early stage, there is nothing to suggest it was a targeted attack or that the woman had received any credible threats against her before this incident. Detectives from the Met’s specialist crime command (Trident) are leading the investigation.

Arundel Castle: Mary Queen of Scots beads stolen in raid

A set of gold rosary beads carried by Mary Queen of Scots at her execution in 1587 was among items worth more than £1m stolen in a raid on Arundel Castle.

The gold and silver artefacts were snatched from the West Sussex castle on Friday night.

Other pieces taken during the raid include coronation cups given by Mary to the Earl Marshal.

An Arundel Castle spokesman said the stolen items were of "priceless historical importance".

The castle only reopened to the public on Tuesday.

“A teacher at Batley grammar school in Yorkshire was suspended from work in March. He was forced into hiding, fearing for his life after receiving death threats. All he did was show pupils a cartoon of Muhammad, as part of a lesson about free speech and blasphemy.

A mob of religious conservatives gathered outside his school in Batley, Lancashire to protest against the cartoon. The school obliged them and duly punished the teacher. The head apologised for the teacher’s actions and sent pupils home early for the Easter break.

Two months later, the teacher will finally be allowed to return to work. An independent investigation commissioned by the Batley Multi Academy Trust, which runs the school, has found that he did not intend to cause offence. The school has agreed to lift his suspension.

But that’s not the end of the matter. The trust also says the cartoon should not be used again in any lesson, out of ‘respect’ for the wider community. It says it is ‘committed to ensuring that offence is not caused’, and that it ‘deeply regrets the distress’ provoked by the cartoon.”

It seems like the lesson of the ‘ free speech and blasphemy’ class is that in the UK there isn’t free speech and blasphemy is a real offense.

County lines: 1,100 people arrested in UK crackdown

A crackdown on county lines drug dealing gangs resulted in the arrest of 1,100 people and the seizure of 292 weapons.

Forces across the UK boosted activity against county lines gangs in the week from 17 to 23 May.

In this week there were 33 guns and 219 knives among the weapons seized and 80 drug dealing phone lines identified.

County line gangs are urban drug dealers who sell to customers in more rural areas via dedicated phone lines.

There are currently thought to be around 600 of these gangs operating in the UK, down from around 2,000 two years ago.

They are notorious for exploiting children to work as couriers and forcing vulnerable people to let them use their homes to conceal or deal drugs, as portrayed in BBC drama Line of Duty.

During the week of action, 904 of these "cuckooed" homes were visited by law enforcement, and 1,138 vulnerable people were safeguarded, including 573 children.
