Thirty wasted miles a day, you mean.

You are wasting energy.

I think you need to conserve. Be like me. Don't bike. Nap.

And photographic evidences that I'm not bullshitting. Here's the 24 hour McDonalds next to Manchester Royal Infirmary, the last place on my route where I know I can always get a coffee. I've been going in every night for so long that all the staff know me and normally slip me a free brew if the manager isn't in. :) I've done about 10 miles by now and am on my way out of the city centre. (It's not a great idea to hang around in the city centre in the small hours of Saturday morning: just asking for trouble.)

https://i.imgur.com/8AYZg0v.jpg

A little further on and I'm in Rusholme and the famous Curry Mile, with its mouthwatering smells. If McDonalds is packed, or there are loads of beggars hanging around, I stop at the Wanasah Shisha Bar for a Turkish Coffee instead. If I haven't eaten all day, I sometimes treat myself to a kobedah at the nearby Rusholme Chippy, one of Manchester's first kebab houses and still one of the best.

https://i.imgur.com/QKtstvi.jpg

A couple of miles further on and I'm in Fallowfield, the heart of studentland. Here's the Queen of Hearts, formerly a church but now a pub and popular with the students for good beer and decent, cheap food.

https://i.imgur.com/5rmKsrT.jpg

A good few miles further on and I'm approaching Wythenshawe Park, out at the edge of the Greater Manchester conurbation and not far from the airport.

https://i.imgur.com/BDxpzcm.jpg

I'm now out by Wythenshawe Park & Hall. I went to night school here studying horticulture back in my gardening days. (It's pitch black, with no street lights, so forgive the pic quality.)

https://i.imgur.com/YA6Sw9U.jpg

Round the park and I'm at Moor Road and one of them there newfangled tram stations...

https://i.imgur.com/EP5eH78.jpg

Over half way, now, and heading for home...

https://i.imgur.com/GLcV6fM.jpg

Into Gatley Village and the lovely Horse and Farrier. (Loads of money in Gatley.)

https://i.imgur.com/Ppi2xta.jpg

Now in Cheadle Village. Not too far to go, so it's time for a smoke break...

https://i.imgur.com/5JTSsJp.jpg

Back in Stockport by the Mersey where, of course, it is now raining.

https://i.imgur.com/aTkuWGw.jpg

The last half mile home and up Lancashire Hill. I've seen teenagers pushing their bikes up this bugger but I sail on with little effort, feeling smug. :)

https://i.imgur.com/kS1P21c.jpg

At the top of the hill is my local pub, The Navigation. There are likely still a few ne'er-do-wells in there at 3.00 but I don't give in to temptation.

https://i.imgur.com/QCXDBMM.jpg

And back home to my little, wet house on my little, wet, cobbled street. :)

Indeed I did. Burton's Book of the Sword as I recall.

Returned it too. I think the cops told me that they recovered virtually all the stuff that the guy stole.

You should go there and tell them you know me, they may let you borrow something.

What impresses me the most is that one can ride all around Manchester late at night without fear.
That's mostly true. There are some areas best avoided late on but all the locals know where they are.

Citi Bike struggling to keep up with coronavirus ridership spike\

https://nypost.com/2020/03/13/citi-bike ... hip-spike/
Citi Bike is struggling to keep up with a coronavirus-induced ridership spike, The Post has learned.

Ridership on the Lyft-owned bikes through the first 11 days of March was 517,768, a 67-percent increase compared to the same period last year, the city said Thursday.

But the company — which usually staffs up for the busy summer months — is floundering amid the increased demand, one field mechanic said.

I was wondering about that, Pyrrho. My 30 mile nightly ride takes me about two hours, so it's roughly equivalent to walking 6.

Add 40 pounds of cargo and the equation changes a lot. Add 80 pounds of cargo and you realize nobody could walk 10 miles with 80 pounds, but you can do it on a bike no problem.

Make it 100 pounds of dead weight, and then stop and think ...

Oh! So that why trains were so popular

Sorry. But did you ever put a friend (girlfriend) on the handlebars (or elsewhere) and ride off into the night with ease? Try carrying the same weight, and wow, bicycles are fucking awesome

I few years ago I went trekking in Nepal. We stopped at our lodge early on the first day. I guess the guide thought we were wimps.

We were.

How do I know?

Because as we were sitting there at the table next to the trail I watched a porter slowly hiking up the mountain carrying a fucking stove on his back. A large potbelly stove.

As he passed us, the manager of the lodge said, "Heavy."

Yeah. No shit.

I asked him how much he thought it weighed.

His answer: "Maybe 100 kilo."

I actually have a picture of it somewhere.

Just ride with flat tyres (did I spell that right) and it'll be like 20.

Hmmm. My every day bike weighs in at around 30 lbs plus another 10 lbs in accessories, (lock, water bottle, lights, rack, panniers etc.) On top of that, I routinely carry a cycle bag with tools, repair kit, radio, waterproofs and so on that weighs another 5 lbs or so. Let's say I'm shifting an extra 45 lbs, a quarter of my current weight, around compared to a man walking. However, I'm not physically having to carry the weight, only changing its momentum, so it's not easy to make a direct comparison. Anyone have the physics to be able to work it out?
