My ex said that singing sound/vowels in place of words was extremely common around that time period, and for quite a while. Especially for foreign songs with no good translations.

(Their movie translations also had a guy saying the dialogue in Russian over the regular movie. They did not erase or muffle the original language or actors; the translator (just 1 guy) spoke over them)
