Russian Priest Who Adopted 70 Children Charged With Pedophilia

https://i.imgur.com/MdcYIjQ.jpg

A celebrated Russian priest who adopted 70 children has been arrested on suspicion of pedophilia.

Father Nikolai Stremsky, said to be the patriarch of Russia’s largest family and a recipient of a prize established by the Red Cross and Russian government, was reportedly detained Tuesday. Local media reported that authorities first opened a criminal investigation into unlawful restraint against Stremsky on Sept. 12.

An Orenburg court placed Father Nikolai Stremsky in pre-trial detention until Nov. 12. Stremsky faces charges of statutory rape, indecent assault and failure to perform parental duties, which carry prison sentences of up to 20 years, 12 years and three years respectively.

The court also placed Stremsky’s unnamed adopted daughter and her husband in pre-trial detention until Nov. 12 on charges of unlawful restraint, which carry a prison sentence of up to five years.

Seven minors who were said to be under Stremsky's guardianship are the victims in the case, Interfax reported.

The Orenburg parish has temporarily excommunicated Father Nikolai for the duration of the investigation. Stremsky has denied his guilt.

He had previously been suspended for several months in 2015 after he was caught drunk driving.

Several of Father Nikolai’s adopted children plan to demonstrate in his support, telling Russian media that they don’t believe the charges.

Without oversight, scores of accused priests commit crimes

Nearly 1,700 priests and other clergy members that the Roman Catholic Church considers credibly accused of child sexual abuse are living under the radar with little to no oversight from religious authorities or law enforcement, decades after the first wave of the church abuse scandal roiled U.S. dioceses, an Associated Press investigation has found.

These priests, deacons, monks and lay people now teach middle-school math. They counsel survivors of sexual assault. They work as nurses and volunteer at nonprofits aimed at helping at-risk kids. They live next to playgrounds and day care centers. They foster and care for children.

And in their time since leaving the church, dozens have committed crimes, including sexual assault and possessing child pornography, the AP’s analysis found.

A recent push by Roman Catholic dioceses across the U.S. to publish the names of those it considers to be credibly accused has opened a window into the daunting problem of how to monitor and track priests who often were never criminally charged and, in many cases, were removed from or left the church to live as private citizens.

Each diocese determines its own standard to deem a priest credibly accused, with the allegations ranging from inappropriate conversations and unwanted hugging to forced sodomy and rape.

Dioceses and religious orders so far have shared the names of more than 5,100 clergy members, with more than three-quarters of the names released just in the last year. The AP researched the nearly 2,000 who remain alive to determine where they have lived and worked — the largest-scale review to date of what happened to priests named as possible sexual abusers.

In addition to the almost 1,700 that the AP was able to identify as largely unsupervised, there were 76 people who could not be located. The remaining clergy members were found to be under some kind of supervision, with some in prison or overseen by church programs.

The review found hundreds of priests held positions of trust, many with access to children. More than 160 continued working or volunteering in churches, including dozens in Catholic dioceses overseas and some in other denominations. Roughly 190 obtained professional licenses to work in education, medicine, social work and counseling — including 76 who, as of August, still had valid credentials in those fields.

The research also turned up cases where the priests were once again able to prey on victims.

Politician Wants Catholic Churches to Post Signs Warning Children of Danger

Melbourne City Council member Nic Frances Gilley has introduced a proposal to require Catholic churches to comply with the province of Victoria's new mandatory abuse reporting laws or have signs posted outside warning parents that the houses of worship might pose a danger to children.

The Age reports that Gilley is requesting the state "write to all churches and places of worship requesting assurances that all staff and associates will abide by the law of mandatory reporting," and if they do not provide those assurances the state should erect appropriate signage.

In September, Victoria passed the Children Legislation Amendment Act 2019, which added religious leaders to the list of individuals who are legally mandated to report child abuse to the authorities when they learn about it. That list already included police, teachers, nurses, midwives and other occupations.

Many Catholic leaders are protesting the law because it includes abuse admitted within the space of the confessional. In July, the Vatican's Apostolic Penitentiary released a statement pushing back against it, saying that "Any political action or legislative initiative aimed at breaking the inviolability of the sacramental seal would constitute an unacceptable offence against the (freedom of the Church)."

Gilley said it was the government's responsibility to "clearly advise people of the risks of using such institutions."

Councilor Gilley has a personal stake in this conversation. He was an Anglican priest for 23 years, rising to the position of executive director of the Brotherhood of St Laurence. He left the church in 2008, penning an open letter in which he revealed that he was sexually abused as a child.

I'm sure a public contest for designing the "signs" would give interesting results.

Lawsuits against the Church of Scientology are piling up, alleging a vast network of human trafficking, child abuse, and forced labor
  • A number of women have sued the Church of Scientology in recent months, alleging a variety of complaints including human trafficking, forced labor, and child abuse.
  • On Thursday, a woman identified only as Jane Doe sued the church in a Miami-Dade court, alleging the organization enabled child sexual abuse and has harassed and surveilled her since she left the church last year.
  • The lawsuits follow years of renewed public scrutiny over the secretive church and its inner workings, which largely remain an enigma to outsiders.
  • The church has steadfastly denied all allegations against it and has called its accusers liars and attention-seekers.

Slightly off-subject:
Another Financial Scandal Rocks Vatican As $200m In Charity By Catholics Invested In Luxury Apartments In London

The Vatican is reportedly investigating how $200 million funds that it had parked in Swiss bank accounts eventually ended up financing a luxury property development in London’s upscale Chelsea district and in the process generating windfall profits for a company that managed the investment for the Holy See, Financial Times reported.

The sum of $200m held in Swiss bank accounts was controlled by the Secretariat of State and was transferred to a Luxembourg investment fund called Athena Capital. The funds were channeled towards a project to construct 49 luxury apartments at 60 Sloane Avenue. The Vatican is said to be engaged in the project since 2014.

The Secretariat of State serves as the central papal governing bureaucracy of the Catholic Church. It is responsible for tall the political and diplomatic functions of the Holy See. It manages the millions of dollars in charity given by Catholics around the world

As a part of an investigation of suspected financial irregularities, Vatican police this month raided the offices of the Holy See’s Secretariat of State and its Financial Information Authority, or AIF and took away documents and electronic devices. The two departments were searched for evidence involving alleged financial crimes.

The Vatican itself had announced that raids were prompted by complaints lodged in the summer by the Vatican’s bank and auditor-general about “financial operations carried out over the course of time”.

Five Vatican employees, including a top official at the Vatican’s Financial Information Authority (AIF) and a monsignor, were also suspended following the police raid

The AIF, headed by Swiss lawyer Rene Bruelhart, is the financial controller, with authority over all Vatican departments.

According to the FT report, Holy See’s investment with Athena Capital was personally authorised by Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu, who is said to have met the London-based financier inside the Vatican. Cardinal Becciu was at the time in charge of the administrative duties of the Secretary of State, and reported on a daily basis to Pope.

Vatican Bank, better known as the Institute for Works of Religion, or IOR, was for decades embroiled in numerous financial scandals.

Apparently they got ripped off:
Pope's bodyguard resigns over new financial leaks scandal

The Vatican's latest scandal claimed its first victim Monday as Pope Francis' chief bodyguard resigned over the leak of a Vatican police flyer identifying five employees who were suspended as part of a financial investigation.

The Vatican said its police chief, Domenico Giani, bore no responsibility for the leaked flyer but resigned to avoid disrupting the investigation and "out of love for the church and faithfulness" to the pope.

The person who leaked the document to the Italian newsweekly L'Espresso remains unknown.

Giani, a 20-year veteran of the Vatican's security services, has stood by Francis' side and jogged alongside his popemobile during hundreds of public appearances and foreign trips. He also was the chief bodyguard for Pope Benedict XVI, and the Vatican took pains to stress his "unquestionable faithfulness and loyalty" to the Holy See.

Giani had signed the Oct. 2 police flyer after his agents raided two Holy See offices — the secretariat of state and the Vatican's financial intelligence unit — as part of an investigation by Vatican criminal prosecutors into alleged financial irregularities surrounding a 150 million euro investment into London real estate.

The deal, which allegedly resulted in middlemen ripping off millions of euros from the Holy See over the past decade, has itself raised questions about the Vatican's murky finances and poor investment strategies in the past decade.

The raids and related suspensions, launched following more recent efforts to recover some of the lost money, were highly unusual for the Vatican and sparked fresh speculation about its Machiavellian turf battles, power struggles and score-settling. [Ha ha!]

That the alleged leaker remains unknown has added to the mystery surrounding the case, which has implicated high-ranking Vatican cardinals and monsignors.

And in other (usual) news:
4 New York priests placed on leave after abuse allegations

NEW YORK — Four priests from the New York Roman Catholic Archdiocese have been placed on administrative leave following allegations of abuse of minors reaching back decades.

The newspaper Catholic New York reported this week that the prelates’ ministries are temporarily restricted.

In a letter sent to members of three different parishes, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the spiritual head of the archdiocese, says the leave “is not a punishment,” and that the men are presumed innocent pending the outcome of an independent investigation.

The fourth priest works in an administrative capacity.

Dolan said the cases have been reported to the District Attorney’s Office, and outside investigators will assess the allegations before a presentation to the Lay Review Board that will determine whether each priest is suitable to return to ministry.

Catholic priests in Colorado sexually abused at least 166 children in the past 70 years

(CNN) – At least 166 children were abused by dozens of Catholic priests in Colorado since 1950, a report released Wednesday says.
The 263-page report details decades of misconduct and reveals how it took nearly 20 years for one diocese to discipline priests accused of sexually abusing children.
"This is a dark and painful history," Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser told reporters. "The culture going back decades was one where there was a reluctance to acknowledge and address wrongdoing."

The report was commissioned by the Colorado attorney general's office in agreement with the state's three dioceses to document sexual misconduct involving minors by priests.
For seven months, former US Attorney Bob Troyer reviewed more than 500 priest files and interviewed witnesses, victims, priests and law enforcement. In his findings, Troyer says most of the incidents took place in the 1960s and 1970s.

Ealing Abbey: Paedophile priests acted 'like the mafia'

A group of paedophile priests behaved "like the mafia", abusing dozens of young boys at a west London school over a 50 year period, a report says.

St Benedict's School, Ealing, was described as a "grim and beastly place" by the Independent Inquiry Into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA).

A culture of cover-up and denial of sexual abuse operated at Ealing Abbey, which ran the school, the report found.

To date five priests have been jailed for abusing children at the school.
  • In December last year Laurence Soper, 74, was jailed for 18 years for abusing boys in the 1970s and 1980s
  • In 2009, Father David Pearce, 75, nicknamed the "devil in a dog collar", was jailed after he admitted 11 charges of indecent assault dating back to 1972
  • Between 2003 and 2009, "master of discipline" John Maestri, 78, of Chatham in Kent, admitted five indecent assaults against children at St Benedict's in the 1980s and was jailed
  • In 2011, John Skelton was convicted of indecent assaults against two complainants said to have occurred in 1983
  • Father Anthony Gee faced accusations of abuse and a civil action was brought against him

Suspended Indianapolis priest in court on sex crimes charges

A suspended Catholic priest in Indiana has appeared in court on charges alleging he sexually abused a teenage boy.

The Indianapolis Star reports that the Rev. David Marcotte appeared Tuesday in Hamilton County Superior Court on charges of felony child solicitation, vicarious sexual gratification and the dissemination of matter harmful to a minor.

Prosecutors allege that Marcotte engaged the boy in sexual talk and lewd behavior over social media.

The Indianapolis Archdiocese suspended the 32-year-old Marcotte from public ministry in February after its victim assistance coordinator learned of the alleged abuse. The archdiocese said Marcotte was assigned to St. Malachy Parish in Brownsburg and St. Martin of Tours Parish in Martinsville at the time of the alleged abuse.

Roman Catholic Church opens investigation after two nuns became pregnant

The Roman Catholic Church is investigating how two nuns on separate charity missions to Africa became pregnant.

The nuns were sent to their home countries in Africa from their order in Sicily to complete missionary work, Italian news outlet ASNA reported last week.

One nun, age 34, discovered she was pregnant after she was given an ultrasound following complaints of stomach pains.

The other nun, a mother superior originally from Madagascar who cared for the elderly, also found herself pregnant, the report said.

She left the order to return to her home country, the report said. The other is expected to leave the order to raise her child.

French bishops approve payments for church sex abuse victims

French bishops have approved a plan to financially compensate people abused sexually within the church

French bishops on Saturday approved plans to financially compensate people abused sexually within the Roman Catholic Church.

Any person recognized by their bishop as a victim will be eligible to receive money, they said, and the church will appeal for donations to foot the bill. Bishops also voted to allocate 5 million euros ($5.5 million) to an independent commission examining church sex abuse in France and to support prevention efforts.

Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, the archbishop of Reims and president of the Conference of French Bishops, said payments to victims will recognize both their suffering and "the silence, negligence, indifference, lack of reaction or bad decisions or dysfunction within the Church."

The fund was green-lighted by 120 bishops at their biannual assembly in the southwestern town of Lourdes.

Cardinal Pell granted final chance to challenge sexual abuse convictions

Pell was granted leave to appeal the verdict in the High Court of Australia.

The ex-Vatican treasurer, 78, is currently serving a six-year jail term for abusing two boys in a Melbourne cathedral in the 1990s.

He lost his first challenge against his convictions in August and has consistently maintained his innocence.

Pell is the most high-ranking Catholic official in the world to be convicted of child sexual abuse.

Last December, a jury unanimously found him guilty of sexually abusing two 13-year-old boys in St Patrick's Cathedral, when he was the city's archbishop.

Bishop who investigated sex abuse accused of sex abuse

NEW YORK (AP) — A Roman Catholic bishop named by Pope Francis to investigate the church’s response to clergy sexual abuse in Buffalo, New York, has himself been accused of sexual abuse of a child, an attorney for the alleged victim notified the church this week.

The attorney informed Catholic officials in New Jersey that he is preparing a lawsuit on behalf of a client who says he was molested by Brooklyn Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio in the mid-1970s, when DiMarzio was a parish priest in Jersey City.

DiMarzio said there is no truth to the accusation.

“I am just learning about this allegation,” he said in a statement Tuesday to The Associated Press. “In my nearly 50-year ministry as a priest, I have never engaged in unlawful or inappropriate behavior and I emphatically deny this allegation. I am confident I will be fully vindicated.”

In a letter sent Monday to the church’s Newark, New Jersey, archdiocese, Boston attorney Mitchell Garabedian said 56-year-old Mark Matzek alleges he was repeatedly abused by DiMarzio and a second priest, the late Rev. Albert Mark, when he was an altar boy at St. Nicholas Church and a student at St. Nicholas School.

Last month, Pope Francis tapped DiMarzio to investigate the church’s Buffalo Diocese, where Bishop Richard Malone has come under fire for his handling of a burgeoning clergy abuse scandal that has roiled the diocese and prompted calls for his resignation.

“The investigation of the diocese of Buffalo by Bishop DiMarzio is tainted because of these allegations,” Garabedian said in an interview with the AP. “There needs to be a truly neutral investigator to determine whether Bishop Malone should resign,” adding that the investigation should be led by a law enforcement agency.

Poland abuse scandal led to slump in vocations

Poland has seen a 60 per cent drop in priestly recruits in the past two decades.

Poland's Primate has said that the paedophile scandal in the Catholic Church has contributed to a drastic fall in priestly vocations, which have plummeted by a fifth this year, according to newly published Church data.

"Of course, demography has an important part in these falling numbers, but it most certainly isn't the only cause", Archbishop Wojciech Polak of Gniezno told the Catholic Information Agency (KAI). "I'd also pose questions about the faith life of contemporary young people, and about our witness to faith in the Church and the world – about testimony within our families, and about our capacity and determination to resolve difficult and shameful issues in our Church life".

The 54-year-old was speaking after November figures from Poland's Church Statistics Institute showed 498 ordinands had begun training this year at the country's 83 Catholic seminaries, 20 percent fewer than in 2018, confirming a 60 per cent drop in priestly recruits in the past two decades.

Mother Teresa's Charity Investigated for Child Trafficking

The Catholic charity set up by Mother Teresa in India is being investigated over allegations that it was involved in selling children in its care.

The Indian government has ordered an inspection of all child care centers run by the Missionaries of Charity after two of its employees were arrested over the sale of several children earlier this month, NPR has reported.

The investigation stems from a Missionaries of Charity shelter for pregnant, unmarried women in the city of Ranchi, in the eastern state of Jharkhand. A nun, Sister Koncilia, and a social worker, Anima Indwar, were arrested after four children were found to have been sold, including a 6-month-old boy, for as little as $730. Indwar has confessed to her involvement, and all four children have been tracked down.

Vatican accused of harbouring bishop wanted for alleged sexual abuse of young priests

The Vatican has been accused of harbouring a bishop wanted for alleged sex abuse offences, as Pope Francis railed against the evils of sexual exploitation on a visit to Thailand.

Prosecutors in Argentina have issued an international arrest warrant for Bishop Gustavo Zanchetta, who is accused of sexually abusing young trainee priests, known as seminarians. He denies the charges.

Bishop Zanchetta, 55, who is close to his fellow Argentine Pope Francis, lives in the Vatican.

Not only that, he reportedly resides in Casa Santa Marta, an accommodation block in the shadow of St Peter’s Basilica where Francis has lived ever since his election six years ago.

Argentinian prosecutors have complained that the bishop has failed to respond to repeated emails and telephone calls about the abuse allegations, which were made last year by two young seminarians. The trainee priests also accused him of mismanagement of the diocese’s finances and abuse of power.

If convicted, the bishop would face up to 10 years in prison, but there is no extradition treaty between Argentina and the Vatican and for now he seems to be safely ensconced in Rome.

Argentina: Catholic priests jailed for abusing deaf children

A court in Argentina has sentenced two Roman Catholic priests to more than 40 years in prison for sexually abusing deaf children at a church school.

Horacio Corbacho and Nicola Corradi, as well as a gardener, were found guilty of rape and abuse at the school in Mendoza province from 2004 to 2016.

Several victims were in court to see sentence passed on Monday.

The case has shocked Argentina, Pope Francis' homeland, with many accusing the Church of acting too slowly.

What was the court's finding?

On Monday, the court in the provincial capital Mendoza sentenced Argentine priest Corbacho to 45 years in prison.

The 59 year old was found guilty of sexually abusing children at the Instituto Antonio Provolo de Mendoza in the city of Luján de Cuyo.

Corradi, an 83-year-old Italian national, was given a 42-year sentence.

He had been investigated for abuses at the institute's school in Verona, Italy, in the 1970s, but was never charged.

Armando Gómez, the gardener at the Luján de Cuyo school was jailed for 18 years.

The sentences cannot be appealed against.

Surge of new abuse claims threatens church like never before

NEW YORK (AP) — At the end of another long day trying to sign up new clients accusing the Roman Catholic Church of sexual abuse, lawyer Adam Slater gazes out the window of his high-rise Manhattan office at one of the great symbols of the church, St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

“I wonder how much that’s worth?” he muses.

Across the country, attorneys like Slater are scrambling to file a new wave of lawsuits alleging sexual abuse by clergy, thanks to rules enacted in 15 states that extend or suspend the statute of limitations to allow claims stretching back decades. Associated Press reporting found the deluge of suits could surpass anything the nation’s clergy sexual abuse crisis has seen before, with potentially more than 5,000 new cases and payouts topping $4 billion.

It’s a financial reckoning playing out in such populous Catholic strongholds as New York, California and New Jersey, among the eight states that go the furthest with “lookback windows” that allow sex abuse claims no matter how old. Never before have so many states acted in near-unison to lift the restrictions that once shut people out if they didn’t bring claims of childhood sex abuse by a certain age, often their early 20s.

That has lawyers fighting for clients with TV ads and billboards asking, “Were you abused by the church?” And Catholic dioceses, while worrying about the difficulty of defending such old claims, are considering bankruptcy, victim compensation funds and even tapping valuable real estate to stay afloat.

When they say "bring in" what do they mean exactly? Does that include local donations?

BTW I never head of Peter's Penis Pence.

Right but who holds title to the church on the corner? That is to say, if a diocese were sued (I guess that would be the unit of the church to get slammed) would that property be an asset? Are the dioceses incorporated as such?

Not when it comes to a lawsuit and if the entity wants to declare bankruptcy. The accountants will be all over them and ownership of assets will be sorta important

Not about sex, but I'll put it here:
Church investigated by charity watchdog over claims pastors pressured congregants into selling blood for donations

A scandal-hit church is being investigated by the charity watchdog over claims that pastors pressured young congregants into selling their blood for money to donate to the church.

The Charity Commission today announced that it had opened an inquiry into SPAC Nation, based in London, to probe financial and safeguarding concerns.

The commission, which describes the church as a charity set up to "advance Christianity" and that works particularly with young people, has ordered it to bank all cash while the investigation takes place.

The announcement comes after HuffPost UK reported allegations that some members of the church had been taking teenagers to donate blood for medical trials in a practice known as "bleeding for seed".

The publication reported that that some members go to donate blood and are paid up to £100 by medical trial companies. This money is then handed by the young people over to the church’s pastors.

The church, which denies the claims, has previously been praised by politicians for its work to tackle knife crime and gang violence.

However SPAC Nation was already embroiled in allegations that some of its pastors pressured young people to take out loans to donate to the church, revealed by a HuffPost UK investigation last month.

The commission said a case had been opened on SPAC Nation in April last year, and in November this year information received from the trustees "raised further concerns about the charity's financial controls, policy and procedures".

In a statement, it added: "Of immediate concern to the commission is that substantial amounts of charity money are held in cash.

Bleeding the flock, how ingenious.

Well, yes.

But the diocese is ruled (yes that it the correct official word) by the bishop, and the bishop is taking orders from his superior (yes that it the correct official word), and some other diocese or possibly the Vatican can buy the church if it is an important historical one. Then donate it back later.

However, the various diocese own a lot of income producing (and taxable) property of a secular nature that could go first.

One of the bigger landlords in NYC, by the way. But tenants are writing their rent check to some property management company not the Church, because the Church doesn't need to deal with the day to day details of running the business.

As it might be Leona Helmsley getting one of Donald Trump's outfits to run the Empire State Building for her.
Sounds too loosy goosey.

The legal entity that gets sued (the diocese or even arch diocese) owns stuff. In a worst case scenario for them, it's all gone. If the Vatican owns property then I suspect that the accountants would be all over them too. If the Vatican is complicit in any way (paging Cardinal Law) then they will be part of the suit. There is too much money involved for any but the A team to be representing the complainants.

This could get very interesting.

Pope lifts 'pontifical secret' rule in sex abuse cases
The Pope has declared that the rule of "pontifical secrecy" no longer applies to the sexual abuse of minors, in a bid to improve transparency in such cases.

The Church previously shrouded sexual abuse cases in secrecy, in what it said was an effort to protect the privacy of victims and reputations of the accused.

But new papal documents on Tuesday lifted restrictions on those who report abuse or say they have been victims.

Church leaders called for the rule's abolition at a February Vatican summit.

They said the lifting of the rule in such cases would improve transparency and the ability of the police and other civil legal authorities to request information from the Church.

Information in abuse cases should still be treated with "security, integrity and confidentiality", the Pope said in his announcement. He instructed Vatican officials to comply with civil laws and assist civil judicial authorities in investigating such cases.

The Pope also changed the Vatican's definition of child pornography, increasing the age of the subject from 14 or under to 18 or under.

Charles Scicluna, the Archbishop of Malta and the Vatican's most experienced sex abuse investigator, called the move an "epochal decision that removes obstacles and impediments", telling Vatican news that "the question of transparency now is being implemented at the highest level".
Whether this is a real reform or a PR move I leave to your judgment.
