What have you been watching lately
Just a general purpose thread.
I recently started bingewatching Homeland on Netflix. It's not a new series, but in a way that's better if you haven't seen it yet because there's already many seasons to watch. It keeps getting crazier with each season, but in a good way. I finished Season 2 and am on like the 4th episode of Season 3.

I've been watching A Place to Call Home, an Aussie sorta prime time soap. Oddly addictive with more than a bit of All My Children. Takes place in the 50's, gay children, children out of wedlock, evil step mothers. Really a guilty pleasure. I am glad you don't know who I am.

A soap opera? Aren't those for chicks?
Not that there's anything wrong with that I suppose.

Eat me.
It is a soap opera. I have found myself talking to the characters. It's embarrassing.

I recorded The Expanse on recommendation of Phil Plait but didn't start watching until last week. Damn! He was right it doth truly kick ass. Hey, I can forgive a whole lot in sci-fi but this only alerted my bullshit filters a couple of times.

I liked the hell out of the first season. I plan to pick up the second season pretty soon. There's a separate thread about it hereabouts.Fid wrote:I recorded The Expanse on recommendation of Phil Plait but didn't start watching until last week. Damn! He was right it doth truly kick ass. I am watching The Expanse too. At the very least I think it's the best current Sci-Fi TV series.
I mean, there is also Westworld and Humans, but those are differently focused on AI and whether it can be sentient and what that means.
The Expanse is more Space Opera, there aren't really even any robots in it that I can remember, are there? There's aliens, but curiously no robots given the level of technology. You'd think a couple hundred years in the future with colonies as far away as the moons of Jupiter and Saturn that AI would also be a thing, but it just doesn't seem to be a part of the story. You don't really notice their absence though unless you think about it.

Watched Elementary for a couple of seasons. Latest season got sorta preachy. It is almost as if they did focus group and identified what people like about the character and then started writing scripts to a formula. Come to think of it ...

Re: What have you been watching lately
Been catching Legion as it comes on (Season Finale is in a couple of days). Trippy as hell and I spend half the show wondering WTF is going on. But enjoyable. It's based off of an obscure X-Men character, though there is just about zero overlap with the X-men universe SFAICT. The only real crossover has been the big bad of the season. They also talk about the main character's real father, who is a well known character in the comics () and they hint at his identity, but have yet to come out and say it.
In between I have been watching Vikings. Started watching it just as mindless TV to get my mind off of things, but I find myself quite liking it. It makes a mishmash of history, but handles the Viking era better than a lot of shows. Still fucks a lot of things up. Enjoyable though. There is a character named Floki who I identify with a lot.

Prediction: They won't come out and actually say it.
Kind of like how Smallville wouldn't use the name "Superman" for the longest time.

Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

Was reading somewhere though where the show's creator has said he would like to bring the character on to the show, maybe in the second season.gnome wrote:Prediction: They won't come out and actually say it.Kind of like how Smallville wouldn't use the name "Superman" for the longest time.Spoiler:

Cop procedural. Pretty well acted not as over the top as Blue Bloods. Not as gritty as a cable show but entertaining nonetheless.
Seems we have seen 100's of series over the past couple of years.
We have the 7 minute rule. If a show does not grab us in that time it is bye bye. No reprieve.

If the concept grabs me, I give it three episodes. Some shows need a couple of episodes to "grow the beard"
If the concept doesn't grab me, then it doesn't even get seven minutes.

24 Legacy has been actually pretty good.
I have also been generally happy with the serialization of Joe R. Lansdale's "Hap and Leonard" series of books called, oddly enough, Hap and Leonard.

Stopped watching "Young Mr. Lincoln." Exceeded our glurge capacity.
Started watching "Becoming Jane." Too predictable.
Now watching "House of Cards"...the British Original, mind you...thus correcting a long-neglected deficiency in my education.

Well, all the stories are supposed to be interconnected somehow, but I'll be damned if I could make heads or tails out of any of it. And the story line wherein the English is mangled so badly as part of the story, hell, I could only get 1 out of 3 words.ed wrote:I'm serious, damnit!!!
