I Fired My ISP

Post by Rob Lister »

It's hard to believe it's been seven years since I cut my Cox Cable TV and opted only for internet. You can review my journey in this award winning thread.

After cutting the cable, I was left with only my internet bill from Cox. I started at Tier II service for ~$50 a month. I was supposed to get 150 Mbps but very rarely got more than 50. As time went on that slowed to less than 30Mbps during day and evening hours. The bill which started at $50 went up almost every few months by a few bucks to where I am now, $83 a month. They were boiling the frog that is Mr. Lister.

Last week, I finally pulled the trigger and gave Verizon Fios a call. They promised 200 Mbps at $39 a month.

Sold!

So after the install it was time to call Cox. I knew better than to fire them outright as they make it as difficult as possible. Instead took the passive-aggressive route and asked them to change my service to Atsugi, Japan.

Much easier.

Don't get it. Did you stiff Anax for the bill?

About 20 redirects and flashing screens just to find the info on the AT&T account page. I'm lucky I'm not epileptic.

18mbps is what I pay for. 1024 gb data transfer per billing cycle.

I'm a cheapskate.

Not a whole heap of options over here as I can't get a reliable digital TV signal where I am, so it's a full package or nowt. (Well, you can get internet only but for the minimal amount you save, you might as well have the phone and TV package as well.) This is what I normally get for my £39 a month plus most of the SKY TV channels and a landline.

Virgin cable's a lot faster but the TV service is piss-poor and the customer service is appalling, (unless you speak fluent Urdu.) And it's £20 a month more expensive.

So fuck them. Richard Branson can find somebody else to fund his trips to the moon.
