A couple of beat takeshi yakusa movies: ‘outrage’ and ‘beyond outrage’
Think I prefer them to the Hollywood goodfellas, godfather etc

The third is disappointing, but I enjoyed the first two. I think I posted a screen capture of one of the more prominent actors in it – Quentin used him as the Boss Who Gets Beheaded – basically telling everyone they were stupid fucks.

Re: What have you been watching lately
Why is it that in almost all of these shows a character can be found injured in broad daylight and the next scene is the cops and ambulances carting them off in the dark of night?

Now watching "Midnight Mass" which I figure involves a vampire, given the lifts from Dracula.

I should have added that his take on Zatoichi is excellent. Even has Takenobu Asano in it.

Prescription for Murder starring Gene Barry and Peter Falk.
Made for TV movie that puts modern cinema to shame. The dialogue almost always has subtext. The camera tells the story.
It started the career of Columbo. I rewatched it over Christmas with three generations of family. Try putting the phone down and really enjoying it though. It was made to be watched and it's almost disgusting how well it's done.

Now watching The Haunting of Hill House. Not sure about this one. Don't care about the characters.

They used names from the book/movie for the characters. I'll be interested to compare notes.

Re: What have you been watching lately
I stay so busy now that I don't have time to "consume content" like a tourist. I pretty much just pay attention to what RLM and Critical Drinker like so I don't waste time on modern schlock. Im looking for 5 star stuff just to justify wasting my life on. I settle though.
Always Sunny went to Ireland this season and it's one the few shows I stay with hit or miss since it takes real risks. There was a scene that is a very low brow in the current season, but Danny Devito, Charlie, and Colm Meaney pull it off so well it had me bust a gut laughing.
I want the joy of actually feeling something these days other than "amusement". The birds outside at my feeder are more entertaining than Big Bang Theory.
Curb Your Enthusiasm and Always Sunny really delivered this fall.
Aside from that, the wife has been slowly rewatching BSG with me during the pandemic. It was tough at times because humans under duress strikes too close to home. She can't believe we had TV this disgustingly good.
Last night, we watched Roslin and Adama reconnect after she visited the hybrid. I know how this ends. My wife doesn't . She was crying. The sincerity of the performance ad legitimacy of the writing makes her weep. She has no idea how their story ends.
The metaphysical was anathema to me as a younger man, but as an older man I'm fine with it.
Never forget what they took from us. We had a golden age.

Re: What have you been watching lately
Last night we were watching BSG s4e9 "Hub". It's even better on an Oled.
Mostly I've been listening/watching to self improvement stuff. The "distracted viewing" that most people have with corporate TV, I pretty much spend on podcasts about things.
I try not to fill my head with mediocre filler tv anymore.

So I finished watching the Expanse. Seems pretty clear that some sort of sequel is in store.

It's had its moments. Last episode tonight. I want to read the book again. This series was okay, nothing to stay up late for though.

Re: What have you been watching lately
That was sorta my takeaway after one episode. I found their use of names from the book to be irretating.

Re: What have you been watching lately
Last night we watched Saul Tigh turn and tell Apollo to flush him out the airlock. I think this was the true climax of the series. The bigot, the person who suffered most, stood strong and human when his mettle was tested with the fate of all sentient life they are aware of on the line.
The differences between 2000s era neo golden age TV and modern "content" are stark. You should refuse to binge low quality modern content because life is just too short for another marvel series.

Re: What have you been watching lately
BSG had some good bits but also some things that were just nuts.
Too pick one: I remember the boxing tournament traditionally used to blow off steam, where you could (were expected to ) challenge superiors or juniors that had annoyed you.
Does any army do that? Allow aggrieved enlisted men to challenge generals and beat them to a pulp? (And the other way too, as Admiral Adama challenges the chief engineer for worrying about his newborn).
Not to mention the ludicrous character arcs of Apollo.
If it had ended after season 1, it would have been amazing. It they kept going, stretching out to absurdity and beyond. With ridiculous cylon character/goal development. Horrible lingering let down of a show.

Re: What have you been watching lately
Tried watching Don't Look Up. I found it so annoying that I stopped halfway through.
It's like Armageddon Day but dumber. I don't know how it ends, so I can't spoil that, but here's my rant about the first half of the movie:
ETA: I misremembered. The movie was just Armageddon, not Armageddon Day. The one with Bruce Willis. There was also Deep Impact. Similar ideas. But this is the cynical Post-Modern farcical take on the idea of a planet-killer asteroid movie.

Re: What have you been watching lately
Don't look Up is an accurate portrayal of how leading scientists and governments can not only fuck things up, they can fuck things up in ways nobody could even imagine.
Also they are liars, cons and selfish pricks.
