Well, I happen to really like vG, I can recall a great exhibition at the Met ages ago that was the bees knees. So you can imagine my excitement when my wife announced that there was going to be an exhibition right here in old Sarasota!! Wowsie. AND she even bought tickets!!!!
Went today. You be the judge.
First off the thing cost $50/per. Not bad. You walk into this large temp building and you are faced with a series of 20 x 40 (?) canvases on which are projected text. It is a crawl so you snake around. This was the first screen that met my amazed eyes:

Read the first sentence again. I thought "bullshit, this is clever marketing stuff". Read the second sentence. Therein they admit that the profit margins are enormous. No guards, no insurance, no secure facility, no licensing. Brilliant. And, Yes, the Van Gough exhibition exhibited nothing original
Pardon me for a moment:
To make a long story short, the first 1/2 was walking thru a series of the aforementioned canvases. They contained a 2000 word essay interspersed with quotes from VG. Her is a sample of the writing:

"The ear incident"???? The fucking EAR incident!!!?!?!?!?!?? WTF? Really? This is what you get when you make a minor in lesbian interpretive dance a requirement for a degree in Art History.
Onward. (are you with me?)
The second half consisted of an enormous room with canvas walls and canvas dropped in the middle (like real walls only cheap) won which was projected VG's works. Coming and going, digitally manipulated. We were told that it lased 37 minutes (! :o ).
We watched so as to not appear as philistines. We lasted until we realized that being a philistine might not be a bad thing.
OMGOMGOMG etc.
I was thinking of you lot and did a video:
37 minutes?
So we staggered out
oh, one thing.
If you got close to the "walls" you would see that they were sorta oscillating (from the AC?). If you got close you got a case of vertigo. Very interesting and somewhat unsettling.
OK so we left and went into the requisite "Gift Shop". I saw one thing that summarized the experience. I rarely use the word "vulgar" but I think that it fits here"

Finally, my wife made a very good point: we could do the same thing for any long dead artist. I built on that and thought about a walk thru xmas.

Wish I'd known you were going, I could have saved you $50. Someone I know paid for that "experience" and left feeling as if they'd been through a parking lot full of vendors of velvet paintings of Elvis.

You got vanGouged! But it could have been worse. If Trump was running this, you'd have paid $200 apiece. And you'd be glad of it, you stupid fascist.ed wrote: ↑Mon Mar 14, 2022 7:13 pm Well, I happen to really like vG, I can recall a great exhibition at the Met ages ago that was the bees knees. Re: van Gough!!!!
I heard it was sad and disappointing. I recommend the Van Gough museum in Amsterdam instead. Or at least local exhibits of his actual work. It's incredible in person.
