Masks became a talisman: something to wave around and pretend the evil spirits will stay away. With the politics involved, they became a way of showing that you "agreed with" one view and condemned another. The irony of that is neither "side" bothered to understand the issue and degenerated into screaming at one another.

The further irony we eventually arrived at a Mask = Vaccine = No Mean Tweets! I be Woke Build Large Mansions equation: so that, frankly, opposition to the vaccines is as mindless as opposition to masks because "they" wear them, and they are "inconvenient."

Irrationality cuts both ways and ascends and descends and sideways slides many levels.
