Captain Von Hentig of the Guards Reserve Division said of the Somme:

'It was the muddy grave of the German Field Army'

And why the fuck are we still having wars in 2022? It was supposed to be the war to end them all.

I do recommend Dan Carlin's treatment.

It was a horror show of unimaginable proportions. The whole damn war was a horror show, but the mud made it diabolically horrible.

We didn't get it right, and we are going to KEEP trying until we get it perfect.

Point of statistical interest: the Somme was shocking to Britain due to the large casualties… however, this is just a function of having a large number of your troops engaged with a large number of competent enemy for a long time.

Statistic:
Fatalities per British division per week:
The Somme = 90
Normandy (ww2) = 100

The Somme had 3 times as many divisions and lasted twice as long… but that will happen when facing the main body of an unground down German army.

After the war Haig was praised by the American General John J. Pershing, who remarked that Haig was "the man who won the war".

Haig has received some rehabilitation in modern treatments I believe.

The problem is that WWI sort of exists as the example of a useless war. The stupid loss of life requires blame.

It reminds me of Lost Cause and even earlier apologetics where the South had "the Bestest Generals," but the Union had more men to throw at them. Not completely untrue: the Union had some really, really bad political generals. However, Lee was not this genius later fans of slavery wanted him to be. They blame everyone but him for his failures at Gettysburg, for example.

Back to WWI, there is the whole "stabbed in the back" myth the Germans clung to which brought us the Autoban.

Probably.
